She clapped her hands, “Children, to celebrate your Eldest Brother’s successful rank-up, let’s kill a chicken! All of you have to thank him for being able to eat the chicken today!” Although she planned to kill it either way, she was more willing to say that it was because of her eldest son. That way, both the kids and Dawang could be happy about it.

The hen that Han Qingsong brought back a while ago had laid an egg upon arriving home. Then, every time Lin Lan commented that they would kill the hen the moment it stopped laying eggs, it laid another one. Finally, it seemed to truly stop laying eggs.

If a hen couldn’t produce eggs any longer, then breeding it was a waste of grains, so the wisest choice after was to kill it and eat the meat.

She planned to kill it after lunch before spending the afternoon plucking out its feathers and stewing it. By the time Han Qingsong returned at night after work, the whole family would be able to have it for dinner.

“Ahhh, let’s kill the chicken!” Sanwang’s eyes gleamed the brightest, “Second Brother, find the recipe! We have chicken to eat!” He happily picked up Xiaowang and swung him around before putting his littlest brother down and starting to pester Dawang, “Eldest Brother, Eldest Brother, do the swing!”

What Sanwang meant was for the adult to cross their hands on their heads and have the child grab onto the older one’s arms. Once the adult starts to spin around, Sanwang would be able to practically be swung around.

Dawang was very strong. Even if he didn’t do that, he was physically able to just use his hands and carry his younger brothers for a couple of twirls.

Sanwang was excited whereas Xiaowang was a little scared.

After Dawang indulged in his younger brothers’ gimmicks and put them down, Xiaowang started to spin around on the spot.

Xiaowang also felt that the world was turning upside down in front of him. He laughed as if he had downed a bottle of alcohol, “I feel so dizzy,” The child also sat down on the ground with a plop.

Erwang wanted to help him.

Dawang commented, “There’s no need, he’ll be fine in a bit.”

It was useless to force someone to get up when they were dizzy, so it was best to let them get over the dizziness on their own before trying anything.

At noon, the family had a simple meal— pancakes with pickles and fried meatballs. After lunch, the children went to cut some grass..

Upon returning, Lin Lan asked Dawang and Erwang to kill the chicken, which they did as she boiled some hot water to remove the feathers. After cleaning up, she cut it into large pieces, blanched the chicken pieces into boiling water to remove the foam and added seasonings such as green onion, ginger and perilla. She didn’t add spices to stew the chicken because she thought that the taste would end up being too strong and the soup wouldn’t taste as good. She also added some mushrooms and black fungus before stewing it directly with water.

The chicken they chose to kill was an old hen that was more than two years old, so it needed to be stewed for a longer time. But since this sort of pot was the more powerful type, an hour give or take was pretty much sufficient.
