Thinking that eating field mice contributed in eliminating one of the main four pests that always hoarded the crops, Xiaowang ate more vigorously and felt that the taste was sweeter than eating cicada larvae. After all, when eating chicken, there was a sense of guilt doing so knowing that it provided them with heaps of eggs throughout its life. On the other hand, there was no such burden when it came to eating field mice. In fact, he thought that he should eat more since it helped eliminate pests.

After the meal, Lin Lan continued to sew some clothes with Maisui whereas Xiaowang followed his father to push the mill. Similarly, Dawang took Erwang and Sanwang to cut some cattails for firewood.

Han Qingsong did not go to the Production Team to borrow a donkey, but pushed it himself.

Liu Chunfang happened to come over with a large basket that was half loaded with corn. She saw Han Qingsong pushing the mill and immediately walked up to him. Putting down the basket, she tried to get close to him and asked him to let her help push it.

“Brother Qingsong, are you pushing the mill?” she asked.

Han Qingsong did not see her and only heard someone talking. He kept walking and hummed a few times merely to humour the person speaking. After pushing the mill a few times, he took a broom to sweep the large grains into the millway and continued to work.

Liu Chunfang, “Let me help you,” She leaned over and reached out to take the broom that was on the mill.

Han Qingsong, “Don’t move!”

Liu Chunfang’s hand was about to touch the broom, but she was frightened by his voice and quickly retracted her hand.

Han Qingsong didn’t pay much attention to her before, thinking that it was only a girl from the village or something. Upon coming closer to take a look, he realised that it was the woman who complained.

He frowned, but didn’t say anything and merely continued to push the mill.

Liu Chunfang, “Qingsong…”

Without waiting for the proper addressing term, Han Qingsong stopped and said seriously, “According to the level of seniority, you should call me uncle.”

Liu Chunfang, “…” What a stingy and vengeful man! She addressed all the men of Han Qingsong’s generation as brothers as well and he didn’t seem to care less. Why was he bothering so much when it was about him?

Even so, she still wanted him to help push the mill, so she didn’t get angry. Instead, she just pursed her lips before standing there talking to Xiaowang.

Xiaowang sat on a big rock and played the harmonica for a while. He believed by doing so, his father would have the strength to push the mill further.

“Xiaowang, what is your mother doing at home?”

Xiaowang, “She is sewing some cotton-padded clothes.”

Liu Chunfang laughed very obviously, “Sewing, I see?”

Xiaowang was a very sensitive child. He immediately felt uncomfortable when she did this. He looked up at Liu Chunfang, “Of course!”

Liu Chunfang smiled and said, “Isn’t your father the one who sews?”

Xiaowang ignored her. He was a polite child and never lost his temper with others. Although he knew that she was the mother of Langtou, he would not be impolite, so he merely opted to ignore her.
