Lin Lan wanted to go outside to talk, but when she turned around and saw Han Qinghua blocking the door of the room, she pretended not to care and continued to sew with the awl in her hand, “Just leave it on the table then. Since I’m a little busy, I can’t really talk to you that much.”

The courtyard doors of rural families remained open during the day, but most people would shout at the gate when they go to other people’s homes and wait for the host to come out. If they have a better relationship, they would go into the yard or enter the house with the owner’s permission. Most people wouldn’t enter the house or the rooms that easily. If something were to disappear, they would be the first suspect after all, so the key was to avoid any hint of suspicion.

Especially since Lin Lan and Han Qinghua had a feud, it was better for him to behave well considering the fact that a feud had occurred between them before.

So when Han Qinghua came in rashly, Lin Lan immediately became nervous and on guard, but she quickly calmed down. He wouldn’t dare to do anything in the village and she didn’t feel that he harboured any form of hostility. If he really wanted to attack her, he would have to have an unbearable amount of resentment and be prepared to fight to the death, which she was sure Han Qinghua didn’t have.

She was not afraid.

Han Qinghua saw that Lin Lan only looked back for a moment before she continued to work on the stool, not appearing as panicked and scared as he expected. Therefore, he had gone into the house and placed his things on the kang while proceeding to sit by the door.

He looked at Lin Lan from behind and said with a smile, “Sister-in-law, these sugar chess pieces are delicious, you should try them.”

Lin Lan stopped her footwork and said lightly, “Your younger sister couldn’t even bear to take this out to share before she got married, but thank you for bringing them home from afar. Alright, go ahead and do what you need to, I’m busy myself anyways.”

Han Qinghua didn’t leave, but instead, he sat there and talked about how he and his Eldest Brother sent their sister to get married. He also elaborated as to how the journey was, how the Liu family behaved, how the city looked like and how they stayed in the guesthouse at night.

Lin Lan frowned and interrupted him, “You see, I’m a bit occupied here and I really don’t have the time to listen to you. How about you come by again when your Third Brother returns home?”

Han Qinghua suddenly laughed, “Sister-in-law, why aren’t you looking back at me? Are you afraid of me?”

Lin Lan sneered, “Why would I be afraid of you?” Not only did she not look at him, but she continued to work on the sewing machine, so the room was filled with the sound of the sewing machine clunking again.

Although she was calm, she remained alert, especially since the sewing machine was wiped clean and shiny, reflecting Han Qinghua’s every move behind her.

Han Qinghua began to talk about the labour camp again, “It was really hard when I first went there. I couldn’t get up in the morning, I couldn’t finish the work in a day and I didn’t have enough food. Sister-in-law…you wouldn’t know, but it was so pitiful.” His voice was a little aggrieved, but it was not obvious amidst all the clunking.
