Strict Wife Of The ’70s Manages The Household - Chapter 859
Lin Lan was very grateful as she didn’t know how to make shoes. Now, all the fabric shoes in the family were made by Xiuyun and her mother.
Lin Lan offered money but she didn’t want it, so she provided more cloth instead. In the end, what was only meant to be a request to make shoes for her and Han Qingsong ended up resulting in extra shoes for the children as well.
Lin Lan was embarrassed and refused to ask for more. At most, she could only ask for a new pair per year, but even that felt like she asked too much from them.
After they talked for a while, Xiuyun’s mother left.
At noon, the children came home when Lin Lan had already prepared lunch. Sanwang rushed into the house holding Xiaowang’s hand, “Mom, tomorrow is the Laba Festival(2) so we have to make Laba congee.”
(T/N: This festival is celebrated on the 8th day of the 12th Lunar month, so somewhere around mid January. It’s a celebration of the year coming to an end and is often paired with the tradition of enjoying Laba congee)
Seeing her own children, Lin Lan really forgot all her worries and smiled, “Of course we have to make it. We’re going to make it better this year.”
After all, the materials were limited last year and she was not so satisfied with the level of her cooking. This year, she started to pay attention to collecting ingredients very early, so now was the perfect time to showcase her skills.
Erwang said, “Mom, you should wait until we get out of school after noon before making it,” Sanwang was thinking about eating it whereas Erwang was thinking about cooking.
Lin Lan said happily, “With your help, I can relax.”
School was over before 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Dawang led Sanwang to cut the cattails far away before bringing them home as materials to keep the fire burning. Erwang and Maisui helped Lin Lan cook as they picked some beans together.
This year, in addition to the usual peanuts, red beans, kidney beans and red dates, Lin Lan also prepared longans, lotus seeds, glutinous rice and walnut kernels, which were all difficult to collect locally.
Because Lin Lan started preparing too early, despite her best efforts to preserve them properly, some of the ingredients still became bad. Especially in the summer, grains were prone to insects and could be scrapped if one was not careful. It was a shame to throw the spoiled ones away, so they were picked out and mashed to feed the chickens and ducks.
The family rinsed them with clean water and soaked them. This way, they could get up early in the morning to start brewing the broth.
Lin Lan asked Maisui and Erwang to do their homework and study while she tried the clothes on Xiaowang.
With the help of a sewing machine, the clothes were beautiful and durable, so Lin Lan asked Xiaowang to wear them whenever he wanted to draw.
Xiaowang was still drawing his big family portrait. He would draw something on it whenever he remembered. It seemed that he couldn’t finish the painting until the paper was full. Lin Lan too found it interesting and just watched from the side without saying anything.
…
At around 5 o’clock, Han Qingsong returned home from the Commune and met Han Qinghua wandering at the entrance of the village, “Old Four?”
