Strict Wife Of The ’70s Manages The Household - Chapter 967
Naturally, rhubarb rice didn’t have the sticky texture of glutinous rice and the taste was also very different, but for the members who were now lacking in both food and clothing, especially the children who hadn’t experienced a new dish, this was considered a form of comfort.
Despite their ideas to substitute the ingredients, making zongzi was not that easy. Some people went over to Lin Lan’s house to learn the techniques from her before heading back to make them after learning the skills. Others just tinkered with the recipe by themselves, unconvinced that since Lin Lan learned it on her own, there was no way they couldn’t do the same. The result was predictable, which was a pot of porridge made of rhubarb rice filled with reed leaves and a few red dates, haha!
When Maisui was cooking the zongzi, people with good relationships with the family then sent their children to deliver some dumplings.
After the zongzi was cooked, Lin Lan asked her children to give two zongzi to families they had friendly relationships with so that they could taste it.
In Sanwang’s words, “Eating zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival is great, but there isn’t a problem eating zongzi on a non-festive day either.”
By noon, Han Qingsong, Dawang and Erwang came back from outside. As soon as they entered the door, they smelled the fragrance of the zongzi. Even Han Qingsong, who usually didn’t care much about his appetite, started to feel very hungry.
Lin Lan smiled at him, “Third Brother looks hungry, so go wash up and eat quickly.” Doing physical work would naturally make one hungry quickly.
It was hot in summer, so the children ate under the gatehouse to keep cool. Since the gate was open, the breeze was very cool. Before the meal, they also fetched some watermelons from the well to serve as fruit desserts after the meal.
Originally, Lin Lan thought that the children preferred sweet rice dumplings, but after tasting the meat and egg yolk rice dumplings, the children all enjoyed the savoury ones even more.
Han Qingsong didn’t care. If the children didn’t like sweet rice dumplings, he would have the sweet ones. Anyway, there were pickles and stewed sauces on the table, so he didn’t really bother too much about tasting both sweet and salty flavours together.
Lin Lan also prepared a bowl of chili sauce for Dawang, which contained chopped peppers, pickled peppers and a little soy sauce. With that, he could stick to the rice dumplings and eat them. Seeing her eldest son’s eyes shining while eating, she knew it suited his taste.
The meat rice dumplings were big, resulting in both Lin Lan and Maisui feeling full by just having one each.
Sanwang and Xiaowang each grabbed a large zongzi to enjoy, though it looked like a small pillow filled with meat and egg yolk. Eye smiles formed onto their faces upon tasting their meal.
Xiaowang pursed his greasy lips, “Third Brother, since you like to eat candy, why don’t you like the sweeter zongzi?”
Sanwang, “I think the meat and egg yolk combo are the perfect match for zongzi; plus, it smells a lot nicer! Only those who don’t have meat can enjoy eating the date and red bean version, hahaha.” He then glanced at Dawang and whispered to Xiaowang, “Say, what do you think it tastes like to eat zongzi dipped in chili sauce?”
Xiaowang shook his head, “Should we ask Eldest Brother?”
