Chapter 22 : Akechi’s Crisis Part 1

“Protective capabilities ?”

Akechi repeated the word Kadono had mentioned exactly as he said it. He wasn’t sure if his sister was aware of it or not, so he made it audible for both parties. Kadono nodded in response.

“Yes, as you’re aware, Akechi-san, the higher we raise the level of protective measures like NBC, the higher the construction costs become. However, there’s a budget limit. The higher we set the protective capabilities, the fewer facilities we can build.”

Kadono touched Akechi’s hand. It made him uncomfortable, but he endured it. Kadono continued speaking. “Each division and unit just demands high protective capabilities without thinking. If we build facilities exactly as they request, the number of construction projects decreases, and it’s inconvenient for the contracting companies. Staff Yoshida and Vice DirectorNagayama’s idea, ensuring the appropriate protective capabilities, is a nuisance for the contractors.”

“So, the contractors who learned about Mr. Yoshida and the others’ actions through former members used even yakuza to get rid of those two, yeah. That’s why we’re no longer in danger.”

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Regardless of the truth of the story, it wasn’t something that could be controlled at Kadono’s level. It seemed to be hearsay from someone else. Thinking so, Akechi decided to poke around a little more. “Is that true? Did someone mention this?”

Kadono stared at Akechi with intense eyes, grinning, and then pointed at Akechi’s wine glass. “Huh? Akechi-san, you haven’t made much progress compared to the last time. If you finish that white wine like I did, I’ll tell you.”

After saying that, Kadono stopped touching Akechi’s hand, picked up his own wine glass, and drank the white wine. Kadono seems to be getting quite drunk. Akechi made up his mind and drank the white wine.

Immediately after that, red wine was served with the meat dishes. Kadono grabbed a bottle of red wine from the waiter and poured it himself into a wine glass. He then hands the wine glass to Akechi and requests him to drink. Akechi felt like Kadono had put something into the wine glass, but in his drunk state, he couldn’t be sure. Akechi managed to finish the red wine somehow. His face was flushed, and he felt dizzy. Finally, Kadono began to speak.

“Hahaha, it seems you’re not as strong with alcohol as I thought. Well then, let me reward you with some information. Actually, I learned this from Planning Officer Haruki. When he was a dedicated member of the Facilities Planning Division, he approached me. He said that Mr. Yoshida’s actions have made Mr. Endo, an OB, very angry. He promised to transfer me to Tokyo if I could report on their movements regularly.”

So, Kadono was the betrayer after all. Akechi thought he should dig deeper and ask more questions, but his thoughts were in disarray. Kadono, who had become more talkative, continued speaking.

“I never expected those two to die after I informed Planning Officer Haruki about the Akabane gathering, but well, they brought it upon themselves, didn’t they?” Kadono sneered while tilting his wine glass.

“The probability of Japan facing a military attack is almost nonexistent. You can just ignore the protection levels and build regular buildings. Those muscleheads in the units wouldn’t even notice what kind of building it is.”

What does this guy think about human life, the importance of his job, and his fellow members of the Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces? Akechi felt intense anger, but his head was spinning, and he couldn’t say anything in response.

†?†?†

Akechi left the restaurant, supported by Kadono. He had been heavily drunk a few times during his student days, but this time felt different. His mind wasn’t functioning properly. The best he could do was make sure he didn’t forget the handbag with his phone in it.

Before he knew it, they had arrived in a deserted alleyway. Akechi, supported by Kadono, found himself near the emergency staircase of an old multi-tenant building. Akechi leaned against the wall, barely able to stand. His eyes were glazed over, his face flushed, and his breathing was heavy. Watching him with a smirk on his face, Kadono began to speak. Kadono was also clearly drunk.

“Even though you’re usually all aloof, what’s with this seductive, submissive attitude? Are you trying to seduce me?

With that said, Kadono pinned Akechi against the wall, put his hand on Akechi’s chin, and quickly lifted Akechi’s face. Akechi tried to resist, but he had no strength. He dropped the bag.

“I love women like you. You have a nice face.”

Kadono brought his face closer to Akechi’s lips, which had pale pink lipstick on them. At that moment, a figure approached at an incredible speed. Kanno turned around.

“What are you doing to our great detective!” Kobayashi rushed in and threw Monno away.
