Chapter 26 : a) At Oujikita Police Station

The morning after the meeting in the document storage room, Nakamura enthusiastically attended a traffic safety class at an elementary school, completed his chores at a furious pace, and then headed to the Oujikita Police Station’s Traffic Division in the afternoon. Upon arrival, he borrowed the file for Vice Director Nagayama’s hit-and-run case and began reading at an empty desk in the traffic investigation unit.”

†?†?†

The incident occurred at an intersection in front of the national civil servants’ residence, about 800 meters northeast of Ouji Station. The road leading east-west consists of two lanes on each side, while one-lane roads from the north and south intersect at the intersection, each designated as one-way towards the intersection. There are crosswalks and traffic signals in place. The dormitory is on the northwest side of the intersection, and there is a convenience store on the southeast side…”

†?†?†

“I’m tired of reading! Hey, do you know about this incident?”

Nakamura called out to the traffic investigator who was working on documents next to her. He was muscular and reasonably good-looking, but compared to Akechi-kun’s extraordinary cuteness, he seemed to fade into the background. Well, she doesn’t mind this type either. The easonably handsome man answered with confusion.

“Hah ? Ah, it was a major accident that happened right near the station. But, who are you?”

“I’m Nakamura, also known as Natchy, from Akabane Minami Police Station’s Traffic Division. Ah, Natchy, also known as Nakamura ? I’m investigating this incident on a special mission. My drinking buddy, the traffic section chief, has already agreed to it? So, hey, what actually happened in this incident?”

With that, Nakamura winked. The reasonably good-looking guy was taken aback, but it seemed like Nakamura had a good relationship with the Traffic Division chief, so he reluctantly decided to go along with it.

“I think it was around 12:30 a.m. The victim was waiting at a traffic light on the southwest side of the intersection when he was hit from behind by a motorcycle and fell into the intersection, unfortunately got run over by the rear wheels of a large truck that couldn’t avoid them, resulting in their passing.”

“Did they catch the suspect?”

“The truck that hit the victim crossed into the opposite lane and crashed head-on with another truck.  The suspect died, and they’re sending the case to the prosecutors for documentation.”

‘It appears to have been a more serious accident than I initially thought.’ Nakamura adjusted her glasses and rapidly asked questions.

“Were there any witnesses?”

“It seems like some customers from the convenience store witnessed it.”

“What kind of people were they?”

“Wait a moment. It should be in the documents… Ah, they were government employees named Kadono.”

‘That guy, he definitely went back to the government residence with Vice Director Nagayama after all. Nakamura leaned forward toward the reasonably good-looking guy.

“Are they from the Ministry of Defense?”

“Y-yeah, it seems so. Someone you know ?”

“Well, you could say that. By the way, what happened to the motorcycle that hit the victim from behind?”

The reasonably good-looking guy answered with an embarrassed expression.

“They haven’t found it yet. We know it fled westward from in front of our police station at high speed, but we haven’t been able to track its movements beyond that… and there’s no footage of it on any security cameras.”

“Did it appear on the security camera at the intersection’s convenience store?”

“ That was caught on camera. I believe there were photos of it as well.”

The reasonably good-looking guy opened the relevant page of the file. It showed a person on a black, large motorcycle wearing a black full-face helmet and a black riding suit.

“Both the motorcycle and the rider were completely black. Strangely, no lights were on, and there was no license plate. They crashed into  the victim at quite a high speed just before the victim turned around. Afterward, it seems they briefly stopped the motorcycle, as if to help the victim, but then got back on and quickly fled to the west.”

“They weren’t trying to provide aid. They were searching for some documents.”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

Without responding to the reasonably good-looking guy’s question, Nakamura asked. “Do you know the model of the motorcycle?”

“Yeah, they’ve figured it out from the surveillance cameras and fragments at the scene. It’s written there.”

Nakamura hurriedly looked at the document that listed the model of the motorcycle. Make a note of it.

“Is this the type of tire on that bike?”

Nakamura showed the model number she had noted down to the reasonably good-looking guy.

“Wait a moment… Ah, this is the same type as the tire tracks at the scene.”

“It’s the same…it was the same culprit!”

Nakamura exclaimed this and then grabbed the reasonably good-looking guy’s hand, shaking it vigorously.

“Thank you! I’ll be having a group date next time, so please come and join me?”

With that, Nakamura pulled out her smartphone from her pocket and rushed out of the room.

 “W-what on earth was that…”

The reasonably good-looking guy watched Nakamura in a daze as she left.
