Chapter 15 – Apocalypse 9 [Attack Force]

“Oh, it’s getting late…”

“…That’s right.”

Reika muttered in a small voice as she reached for the corridor facing outside. The hallway looked red.

Looking out of the window, the five of them were astonished.

Before they knew it, the fog that had covered the town had lifted, and the sky was tinted with dusk.

The sky was black as if it were eclipsed by a solar eclipse, and the sun was floating in the sky with an orange glow emanating from its rim. Flocks of crows were flying busily in the sky.

The fog has lifted, and Haruka can finally see the world. The terrain is quite rough, but he could now use his sniper rifle freely.

“It’s less scary if it’s like this.”

“There’s something strange over there…”

Shinku pointed at a mysterious shadow outside the hospital. It was swaying and moving slowly forward. It was somehow an eerie presence.

On one of the eight beds, there was food and water.

Shinku took a bottle of water and a pastry, and sat down on the bed next to him.

Reika and Yunika were lying on the bed behind her.

Shinku, straightening her back and with good posture, started to eat her pastry while elegantly holding them with both hands. The light of dusk casted a nice shadow over her. Her platinum blonde hair flowing down her back shone in a lustrous light. Her visage was akin to that of a masterpiece, despite she’s only eating some pastry. Haruka couldn’t help but stare at her.

“What is it? You are staring at my face too much.”

“Uh…Oh, no…It’s nothing.”

“He was just admiring Claudia-san’s face.”

Haruka tried to cover it up, but Ria shoots back at him.

“Fuu. I am beautiful desu wa. No wonder you admire me. I’ll make a special exception this time.”

Haruka sat down on the bed next to Shinku and looked at her while making himself comfortable. Since he has permission, he can look at her as much as he wants.

She is a little shorter than Ria, and about half a head taller than Yunika and Reika. Her white one-piece dress with a calm design suited her tall and slender face. It would be a great picture if she wore a straw hat and stood in the rice field.

Her long blonde hair was still in place even after such a strenuous activity. It reflected the orange light coming in from outside the window and shimmered.

“So, will you tell us what happened to you yet?”

Shinku says to Ria. Reika, who had been lying on the bed with her legs flopping around, and Yunika, who was sitting beside her, also turned their attention to Ria.

Haruka and Ria walked out of the hospital.

They had just found the stairs to the rooftop not far from the hospital room where they were all based.

Haruka and Ria hold hands again, just as they did a few hours ago, and walk side by side.

“….I knew it…you have a strange sense of distance…”

“Huh?! If anything, Ria’s distance is more strange.”

Haruka retored while his heart skipped a beat.

“Even when we first met, you held hands with me just like this. You even copped a feel as well.”

A loud, ear-piercing gunshot rang out, and bullets fly out of the gun with a huge amount of gunpowder smoke.

The bullet hits the chest of the black shadow. The shadow splits open from the center and dissipates in a burst of smoke.

“It worked!”

“It hit!”

Ria was so excited that he laid down on his back.

Harukz ejected the empty shell casing and loads the next bullet.

He takes aim at a faceless humanoid monster about fifty meters away from the black shadow and pulls the trigger again.

Again a shot rings out, and the faceless humanoid falls to the ground with a chest wound.

“Another hit!”

“It’s easy to hit because the enemy doesn’t move much!”

And so, for no good reason at all, Haruka continued to attack the enemy with his sniper rifle, as if it were a mini-game to kill time.

When the ammunition was down from one hundred to seventy, Ria suddenly lay down on Haruka’s back.

After the message was announced, an earthquake immediately occurred.

Haruka and Ria lied down on the ground, but the were hit by a tremor so strong that they couldn’t stand up from their positions.

The hospital cracked and gradually collapses.

Dark clouds spread across the sky at an incredible speed, and the area suddenly becomes dim.

“So fast…I think there’s a hardcore player in our lobby…”

Ria complained with a dissatisfied expression on her face.

Not only the hospital, but the entire city was collapsing. It was especially bad in the center of the city, where the sound buildings collapsing was even more prominent.

After the earthquake subsided, blood began to rain down. It was as if the area was conveying an apocalyptic catastrophe.

A door to the rooftop opened in the distance.

But unfortunately, it was not. It was a humanoid monster who wore a pitch black mask, standing around two meters tall. It broke through the door and barged into the rooftop.

It was dressed in tattered pants and a bloodstained apron while exposing it’s ominous, pulsating upper body. It dragged it’s huge machete as it made it’s way towards Haruka and Ria.

Haruka immediately took the sniper rifle from Ria and aimed it at the monster who’s coming straight to them.

“Ria.”

“What is it?”

Haruka turned his face to Ria, who was standing besides him, holding his rifle in standby.

“Thank you for loving me.”

“You’re welcome, Haruka.”

A single gunshot rang out from the hospital roof.

Miyako slashed the machete in her hand at a monster in frustration from not being able to locate Haruka. The monster let out its spine-chilling death throes.

Since she couldn’t find Haruka no matter how hard she tried, Miyako turned her attention towards ending the game quickly by using an otherworldly flesh detection mod that she had obtained at some point.

If Miyako puts an end to the game, Haruka will no longer be able to flirt with the mysterious girl he was with.

In the first place, the game was originally designed for casual gamers. The difficulty level wasn’t that high as long as the players could tolerate their fears.

It was an easy game for Miyako, who was a veteran that achieved the top ranks on the PvP ladders of various fantasy VRMMOs.

After gaining an assault rifle from destroying an otherworldly flesh located at a police station, Miyako was pretty much almost invincible.

Shortly after some other groups destroyed two other pieces of otherwordly flesh in close proximity, Miyako made her way towards a shopping mall and an underground laboratory, where she destroyed the flesh pieces there by herself.

After the fifth piece of flesh was destroyed, the whole city moved to the final stage. The sky was now covered with dark clouds, a rain of blood pouring from it.

Miyako continued to run, not minding the rain that was drenching her. She had been moving for hours without a break. Although it was not as daunting compared in the real world, her body was slowing down due to accumulated fatigue. Still, she couldn’t rest.

She took out her mobile terminal and opened the map app. The last piece of otherworldly flesh’s signal was indicated before she knew it. It wasn’t there before, apparently it would only show up once the five other pieces of flesh was destroyed.

After confirming the approximate location of the flesh, Miyako broke into a run. The portable machine gun the was hanging on her waist and assault rifle on her back were clanking against each other, making a lot of noises.

Miyako had no doubts of Haruka’s love towards her. She truly didn’t doubt him, but still there was something called the “suspension bridge effect”. She couldn’t ignore the aching of her heart, thinking that she couldn’t leave Haruka alone.

Imagining the beautiful girl and how she and Haruka were deepening their relationship even now, Miyako could feel an indescribable, murky black emotions welling up from inside her. She increased her pace, determined to end the game as soon as possible.

While harboring an inexplicable anger towards Haruka who was flirting with other women, Miyako reflected on the things she had said the other day.

It was about the time she had asked Haruka for advice on how to be special to Shun.

With so many enemies blocking her way, Miyako decided to climb through the fence and jumped through the roof of the houses. From there, she parkoured her way towards her destination in a straight line.

The last piece of otherworldly flesh was located in a large church.

Perhaps because it was the remaining one, there was a bunch of horrifying four legged monsters roaming around the church to guard it. Naturally, the last stage of the game was a bit more difficult than the first stage.

In order to conserve the bullets she had, Miyako dashed through the monsters while avoiding combat. A number of the monsters noticed Miyako and chased after her, but she was too agile to get caught up by them.

Eventually, she made her way towards the basement where the last piece of the otherworldly flesh, also known as the last boss, was located without any difficulty.

Miyako didn’t expend a single bullet, and she haven’t received any damage even once. That’s what happened to players who were not afraid inside the game.

The last boss looked grotesque.

It stood two meters tall. Inside it’s metal frame that resembled a human body, there were internal organs packed inside. And from there, huge arms and legs had sprouted.

Half of it’s head seemed to be missing, several tubes extended from the section of it’s brain to the ceiling.

It let out a bone chilling cry, signalling the start of the battle.

Miyako readied her assault rifle and pulled the trigger.

First, she destroyed all the tubes of the monster because it seemed to look important. Since each tube was thick and it was upclose, it was easy to destroy by just shooting it.

After that, all the internal organs of the monster flowed out of it’s metal body. It’s entrails began to act as if it had minds of it’s own and attacked Miyako. Several of it’s arms and legs that was still attached to it’s frame followed up in coordination, but still Miyako managed to handle them accordingly.

When she tried to attack the internal organs, it eventually transformed into humanoid forms. Tentacles began to form on their backs, reddish black fluids dripped on their mouths. They attack Miyako relentlessly, but she avoided them all.

When she fired a volley of bullets with her machine gun at close range, the monsters immediately collapsed without any incident. They were still convulsing, so Miyako attacked them again, silencing them completely.

A deafening shrill scream echoed throughout the basement.

As the church began to collapse due to the death of the last boss, Miyako moved with haste in order to escape the rubble.

When she finally arrived outside, she heard the sound of loud bells echoing throughout the city.

Miyako leaned her body against the wall beside her and slumped down, thinking that the game had finally ended.

She took out her mobile terminal and checked the elapsed time. Only ten hours had passed. The display went from thirty eight hours to thirty seven hours and fifty nine minutes.

Miyako immediately roughly threw the terminal away from her.

It took ten hours to finish the game.

If Haruka and the other woman hadn’t been separated, they would’ve spent ten hours in each other’s company.

Miyako was frustrated, her body trembled in anger. She couldn’t forgive Haruka and the other woman. She felt shameful, but she couldn’t stop herself from gritting her teeth.

The time that Miyako had spent alone with Haruka in the past month was probably less than an hour.

She clenched her hand on her chest, trying her best to suppress the turmoil in her heart. Little by little, she began to regain her composure.
