The children were worried upon seeing Melsa’s long face.

After Melsa left, the children discussed with each other.

If only Harold had been here, they could probably have avoided the disaster that would happen after this. Unfortunately, Harold went to paint at one of the Rothschild Company’s shops and was absent that day.
If Huey, who once stole George’s monster karuta and was the most perceptive one among the children in the slums, had been here, they might have avoided the following tragedy. But Huey was busy with his job at House Stuart (the most popular job among the slums’ children) and was also absent that day.
With no one to stop them, the discussion that began with the children’s best intentions quickly escalated.
