The Tanaka Family Reincarnates - Chapter 388
The Monster’s True Form [Part 1]
“That’s impossible?! Fire Fox, you said?!”
The Lord of Skyte couldn’t believe his ears when William identified the monster’s name. He had never heard of Fire Foxes appearing in the Kingdom. The recognizability of that monster in this country was so low that if one had not taken the [Advanced] level of Monster Science, one would have never even heard its name.
William knowing the monster’s name was already shocking enough for the Lord of Skyte. He could hardly accept the fact when further told that a Fire Fox appeared. No matter how he thought about it, Fire Foxes couldn’t possibly spawn in the Kingdom.
“Professor Wolfgang, please look at these distinctive burns. …Among flame-wielding monsters, only Fire Foxes are capable of burning human skin alone and nothing else, right?”
Seeing the doubtful Lord of Skyte, William asked the academy professor specializing in Monster Science for his judgment.
“Hmm, well… Sure enough…. it can’t possibly be… Fire Foxes… No, wait, this is…!”
The moment the Monster Science teacher saw the burns, he turned to look at the Practical Skill for Hunters teacher with an astonished face.
“These are… burns… from a Fire… Fox’s flames…”
The Practical Skill for Hunters checked the wounds next and affirmed William’s guess.
“What should we do…”
The most important thing during monster hunting is identifying the monster. Even though they had accomplished that, the expression of the two teachers darkened instead of brightened.
“How unfortunate…”
The Monster Science teacher looked at the knight suffering from burn pains with a frown and expressed his sympathy.
There was no cure for these burns.
Even if you cool, apply medicine, or let the burns inflicted by Fire Foxes rest for some time, it would all be futile, and the wounds would not heal.
From here on, this knight might have to choose between enduring the pain of the untreatable burns or cutting off his arm.
However, that was only under the condition that their hunting party could escape this peril…
“Meoow.”
“Eh, it won’t work?”
Emma thought of asking Violet for medical treatment, like that time with the slimes, but was stopped by Koumei before she could lift her skirt.
“Oomew.”
‘Those are also im-paw-sible to heal with Violet’s thread, mew,’ Koumei shook her head. Violet also rustled around under Emma’s skirt, trying to bring it to her attention that she couldn’t heal those wounds.
‘It’s completely different from the injuries from the slime case,’ the cat and the spider told Emma.
“Meow mew!”
*rustle rustle!*
“Huh? External medicines do nothing on the wounds… Huh? What does that mean?”
Emma tilted her head at her pet cat and pet spider’s statement.
“Why! Why is it always you!”
Another knight standing close to the injured knight smashed his fist bitterly on the floor.
“This guy, he… When he was a child, he lost his brother in a house fire. And yet… again… because of fire…”
The knight suffering from burns had an extreme fear of fire because of his past experience. And that backfired on him.
“You mustn’t be scared of the fire.”
Melsa patted the grieving knight’s shoulder as if to console him. Then, she raised her voice so everyone could hear her.
“Everyone, please listen carefully. The ignition source of Fire Foxes’ flames is a fearful heart.”
—Disseminate information on the monsters one is facing—
This was an ironclad rule of monster hunting.
No matter how despair-inducing the information is, everyone must be aware. The reasons behind this rule were: (1) to avoid the possibility of someone worsening the situation out of ignorance, (2) someone might find a breakthrough solution just like Emma did during the local barrier hazard.
“Ignited? By fear?”
The King repeated. The King found it difficult to understand when hearing that something invisible such as fear could catch on fire.
“Yes. Your Majesty, everyone… Please stay strong and take heart. Try to think of something fun. In our current state, we have no other way to escape these flames besides this method.”
Arban replied to the King. No matter how stupid this method might sound, he must have everyone execute it if they wanted to get out of this alive.
“So it means that… we must not be scared in this situation?”
Finding it hard to understand, Arthur asked again to clarify, to which Arban answered with a similarly solemn face.
“Yes. Force yourself if you must, but please think of other things unassociated with fear.”
“…That’s quite a difficult task.”
