Chapter 12: The First Mission Ends, Return

The head with tightly closed eyes opens them, hollow eye sockets, and two streams of bloody tears slide down the cheeks.

The surrounding space distorts, and some scenes change like a revolving lantern.

A girl in a patient gown is forcibly held down on a hospital bed, and as the syringe keeps advancing, she screams madly, her delicate face contorted in a grimace.

After the medical staff leaves, she lies on the bed, staring straight at the ceiling.

A pale little boy suddenly appears at her bedside, smiling, “Sister, come play with me!”

She remains expressionless, ignoring him.

The little boy pouts dissatisfied, then runs to the next bed, saying to another girl, “Sister, come play with me.”

Under his persuasion, she witnesses another girl walk to the window and jump directly.

She instinctively rushes to the window to try to grab her, but what meets her eyes is the shattered body, red and white brain splattering on the flower bed, and the lifeless eyes staring wide open.

“Giggling.”

The little boy hovers in the air, his laughter eerie and sinister.

The girl shivers; that boy is not a figment of her imagination but a devil.

Another girl commits suicide, and she happens to be at the window. The hospital concludes that she pushed the person down. More drugs are injected into her body, as if countless ants are tearing at her flesh, making her suffer unbearably every day.

“Sister, come play with me!”

The little boy extended his invitation once again.

In order to escape seeing him again, she hid in an operating room, stole a surgical knife, and gouged out her own eyes.

Hollow eye sockets, her face drenched in a pool of blood, yet that voice continued to resonate in her ears. She pierced her own eardrums, madly screaming, and ultimately severed her own head.

“Sister, you can finally play with me!”

The little boy gently cradled the blood-soaked head, a sinister smile in his eyes.

Finally, her body was sealed within the cement walls of the morgue. In the darkness, countless insects crawled and nested inside her corpse. Even in death, she could still feel the traces of the insects wriggling inside her body.

“Sister…”

“Let’s play hide and seek, okay?”

“You have to hide well, or if someone catches us, we lose.”

The little boy hugged her lifeless body as disgusting insects crawled and wriggled on both of them.

The scene shattered, returning to reality.

?No wonder no one has ever completed this task before; it turns out you have to find the ghosts of both the little boy and the girl.?

?This little girl is too pitiful, a victim from beginning to end.?

?Upstairs, put away your saintly heart. Don’t empathize with ghosts, even though she’s pitiful, those players they killed were innocent.?

For ghostly beings, the audience in the live stream basically detested them.

In the barrage, many urged Qing Li to quickly extinguish the ghost of the girl.

But Qing Li remained unmoved. Her fingers pressed against the forehead of the severed head, softly chanting a rune. A faint golden light overflowed from her fingertips, and the morgue, shrouded in gloom, gradually emitted a different sensation, as if a divine aura.

After a moment, the golden light slowly disappeared. Qing Li’s brow furrowed, her eyes showing an unprecedented seriousness.

Her exorcism… had failed!

If the salvation failed, it means that this world doesn’t have hell at all.

Or perhaps…

Maybe this world itself is hell.”

“Ding, mission complete. Congratulations to the surviving players for clearing this mission,” the system’s announcement suddenly sounded.

Lin Zizhou’s expression instantly relaxed, and he took a big step forward, wanting to say a few words to Qing Li. Before he could speak, his body suddenly disappeared in front of Qing Li.

“Interesting,” Qing Li raised her lips, sensing a powerful energy enveloping her, and her body also began to disappear.

“Thank you,” a disembodied head suddenly spoke.

White light flashed, and Qing Li’s body disappeared.

?

Opening her eyes, Qing Li found herself in the center of a hall. Crystal chandeliers hung from the hall’s dome, emitting dazzling light, and dozens of eyes simultaneously scrutinized Qing Li.

Returning alive, players always received a warm welcome from the veteran players.

“Miss Qing Li,” Lin Zizhou, who had come back first, approached enthusiastically. “This is the resting place for players. After the mission ends, everyone will have a safety period of over 24 hours.”

As he spoke, Zhou Ya and Shen Ruo also appeared in the hall out of thin air. However, both of them were in tatters, looking quite disheveled.

In comparison, only Qing Li’s clothes were clean, though she dressed modestly, resembling a rural girl.

“It seems this mission wasn’t too difficult; four people came back alive.”

“The 3.5-star mission is nothing special; even newcomers can complete it,” someone whispered in the crowd.

Looking at Qing Li, Zhou Ya’s gaze was complex. Seeing Qing Li return alive surprised her, but she couldn’t show it.

“Coming back alive this time is thanks to the newcomer. Without Qing Li’s help, we would have been wiped out,” Zhou Ya adjusted her disheveled hair and expressed gratitude towards Qing Li.

One sentence caused a stir. All eyes turned to Qing Li, scrutinizing the newcomer dressed in plain and unattractive attire.

Zhou Ya’s words pushed Qing Li into the spotlight, a sly smile playing on Zhou Ya’s lips.

However, some noticed the tension between Zhou Ya and the newcomer. Despite the surface thanks, there was an underlying attempt to manipulate.

In this horrifying world, everyone lived on edge, resorting to any means to survive, even abandoning morals and laws.

Now, with a capable newcomer appearing, they easily became a target of scrutiny.

“Qing Li, can you confirm what Zhou Ya said?” someone with a friendly face asked.

Lin Zizhou grabbed Qing Li’s arm, signaling her not to speak.

“It’s true,” Qing Li said with a slight smile on her innocent and lovely face. Her clear black and white eyes blinked, casting a small shadow beneath her eyelashes in the crystal light.

As silence fell, she continued, “But Miss Zhou doesn’t need to thank me. I took your money, so naturally, I’ll protect your safety. In the end, it’s just a transaction!”

Her words caused Zhou Ya’s smiling face to freeze, grinding her back teeth in frustration.

“Qing Li, why did you admit it?” Lin Zizhou couldn’t help but worry. If everyone knew Qing Li’s abilities, she would be in danger.

But…

Lin Zizhou suddenly recalled the scene of Qing Li carrying a giant axe on her shoulder…

Well, he was just overthinking!

“Zhou Ya, is what she said true? Did she really protect you guys?” someone asked.

After all, the plain-looking girl in front of them seemed ordinary, and it was hard to spot anything extraordinary about her!

Zhou Ya didn’t want Qing Li to keep pretending, gritted her teeth, and said, “Actually, it’s not that Qing Li protected us. She just found a bug in the mission. If we hide in that operating room, the ghost creatures can’t get in. So Qing Li took advantage of it to collect money, making us pay to enter.”
