Night fell quickly.

Qing Li slept until it was dark, awakened by a knock on the door. She opened her eyes, sleepy, and opened the door.

She saw an old man with a wrinkled face holding a white candle, his face as rugged as dry bark.

His cloudy eyes stared straight at Qing Li, his voice hoarse and unpleasant: “Please go to room seven for a gathering.”

Qing Li yawned, her voice lazy: “Okay.”

After quickly washing up, she went to the seventh room.

By then, the other five players had already arrived. The room was empty, with no furniture, and they sat on the floor around a white candle.

The candlelight flickered, casting shifting shadows, and their facial expressions were obscure.

“Our master looks forward to your stories tonight, please don’t disappoint her!”

The old man slowly closed the door, and the room fell into dead silence.

22:00 was approaching…

“Who will start first?”

Yu Xin broke the silence, asking softly.

Telling horror stories was not difficult for them, as they had seen some horror movies and read horror novels in the real world.

Yu Ziyang spoke up: “I’ll go first!”

He appeared to be in his thirties, with a few dozen white hairs at his temples. He looked nervous, his face pale as paper, and after licking his dry, cracked lips, he began to speak in a hoarse voice.

“When I was young, I had a very beautiful girlfriend.”

Yu Ziyang immersed himself in the first person for the story.

“To be honest, for a poor guy like me to have a beautiful girlfriend was a stroke of great luck, especially since she was a college student with good grades and a wealthy family. Yet, she foolishly fell for me.”

He laughed self-deprecatingly.

“I was working in a big city then, earning about eight or nine thousand a month. I wasn’t stingy with her, spending most of my salary on her.”

“Until it was almost the New Year, my family found out about my beautiful girlfriend and insisted I bring her home for a visit.”

“I was naturally happy, after all, having such a beautiful girlfriend, a college student from the city, would certainly bring prestige when I bring her back to the village.”

“When she found out I was taking her to meet my parents, she was thrilled and bought them many gifts. On the bus, she was nervous and kept asking me what if my parents didn’t like her?”

“I said: ‘Silly girl, you’re so beautiful and outstanding, how could my parents not like you?'”

“She blushed at this, but her smile faded as she realized how rugged the mountain roads were.”

“‘Is your home in such a backward place?'”

“Her tone was dissatisfied, and I could tell she wanted to go back. So, I coaxed her, saying we would just meet my parents and leave soon, and that I would buy a big house in the city for our marriage, so she wouldn’t have to live in such a poor place.”

“She calmed down, but her expression was still unhappy.”

“When the bus could go no further, we got off with our luggage and I called a childhood friend from my village to pick us up with his tractor.”

“My friend, a farmer who had never seen much of the world or such a fair-skinned woman, was visibly envious, which made me proud.”

“But she, being delicate, turned pale from the rough tractor ride and began to complain incessantly, even cursing.”

“At first, I tried to pacify her, but eventually, I lost patience and let her rant until we reached my house.”

“Seeing our home, she shouted, ‘How can your house be so shabby? Do your parents live in a junkyard? You brought me to such a dirty place. If you hadn’t said this was your home, I would have thought it was a pigsty!'”

“My parents, who were welcoming us, froze.”

“I was embarrassed and slapped her, saying, ‘Shut up, bringing you here was a privilege, and you dare disrespect my parents? Believe it or not, I could kill you.'”

“My parents seemed relieved at my words.”

“My father, smoking his pipe, praised me, saying, ‘Good job, Yangzi. Women need to be disciplined. If she tries to leave, break her legs.'”

“She, shocked by my slap, was about to leave when she heard my father’s words. She dropped her luggage and turned to go.”

“‘You’ve misunderstood me, Yangzi. I can’t believe you’re this kind of person. We’re done!'”

“As she tried to leave, I told my friend driving the tractor to stop her.”

“He accelerated towards her, and she was thrown into the air like a broken kite, landing hard. This became a haunting nightmare for me.”

“She survived but was crippled.”

“My parents happily held a simple wedding in the village. She was vacant and numb as we married.”

“Whenever I was with her, she cursed, cried, begged, but I couldn’t bear to let her go, my beloved.”

“I wanted a child

from her, believing she wouldn’t leave if she bore my child. So, I persisted.”

“Eventually, she got pregnant. The village midwife predicted a son. She became quieter, not insisting on leaving anymore, which eased my mind.”

“My mother was right – trapping a woman is simple with a child.”

“Her eyes became tender when she touched her growing belly.”

“I started to work hard to be a father. After leaving her with my parents, I went out to work, hoping to give them a better life.”

“I didn’t want my son to endure the hardships I faced.”

“As her due date approached, my family urged me to return. Because of her condition, we didn’t take her to a hospital but relied on the village midwife.”

“When I got back, she had already given birth to a son. I was so excited that my whole body trembled.”

“She lay weakly on the bed and said to me: ‘Congratulations, you’ve become an uncle.'”
