Chapter 23: Tunnel Terror (Part 3)

Stimulated by the firelight, the humans hanging at the top of the tunnel began to stir restlessly. Their mouths tore open, and transparent saliva dripped from the tips of their teeth.

Seeing the imminent downpour of saliva from above, Qing Li took out a red umbrella from her space. The appearance of the umbrella startled those eerily behaving humans, as if they had seen something terrifying, and they shrank back into the shadows.

“This umbrella…”

Chu Ci stared at the umbrella in Qing Li’s hand, his thin lips parting slightly, and he remarked softly, “It’s very beautiful.”

The crimson surface of the umbrella seemed to be stained with fresh blood, emitting a strong sense of resentment. Underneath the umbrella, it was covered with densely packed yellow talismans, with mysterious symbols drawn in cinnabar, faintly revealing a flowing red light.

“Of course, this is the treasured artifact of our Taoist temple,” Qing Li said with a curve at the corner of her mouth.

After her master ran away, he left her a bunch of junk in the Taoist temple. She kept only this umbrella and sold the rest.

The viewers in the live broadcast room, seeing the uniquely shaped red umbrella in Qing Li’s hand, also became curious.

?How is this umbrella beautiful? I doubt Dr. Chu’s aesthetic sense.?

?Why are there so many talismans attached underneath a red umbrella? It feels so strange.?

?I don’t know if it’s just me, but this red umbrella gives off a very uncomfortable feeling.?

?Above, you’re indeed not alone.?

?Curious about the material of the umbrella, it doesn’t look like plastic, nor fabric, nor oil-paper. It looks so strange.?

The topic successfully veered off because of an umbrella.

The humans in the dark part of the tunnel became increasingly restless. The flames from the talismans were gradually extinguishing, and the flashlight seemed to be affected by a magnetic field and couldn’t be turned on. Soon, the tunnel was completely plunged into darkness.

“Shasha— Shasha—”

The faint sounds of friction were magnified in the darkness. Qing Li knew that those things were coming back again.

Five thunder talismans appeared in her hand, but worrying that their power was too great and might collapse the tunnel, Qing Li retracted four of them.

Wisps of purple lightning circulated in her palm, but in the next second, Chu Ci suddenly grasped her hand. His facial features were blurred in the darkness, and only his deep voice could be heard.

“Little girl, I’m here to buy goods. If you damage them, it will give me a headache.”

“It’s your headache, not mine,” Qing Li snorted.

In her ear was the dumbfounded laughter of Chu Ci. He handed her a scalpel and whispered, “Their weakness is the brain. Those parasites live in their brains, sucking the brain matter dry, then use their tentacles to control the nerves inside the human body, manipulating their actions.”

As he finished speaking, a system notification rang in Qing Li’s mind.

“Congratulations to player number 91 for obtaining a special item—Chu Ci’s scalpel.”

“Item function: Can restrain ghosts below the supreme level and cause permanent, irreparable damage.”

Qing Li’s hair stood on end. A tool that could inflict permanent damage on ghosts below the supreme level was incredibly overpowered.

It was known that ghosts could heal themselves with ghostly power, but if they were wounded by this scalpel, they would never fully recover.

“Dr. Chu, I have two hands, one scalpel isn’t enough!” Qing Li hinted obviously.

Chu Ci: “…”

Suddenly, a dark shadow attacked Qing Li. Without hesitation, she kicked fiercely.

“Boom—”

In the darkness, the sound of a body hitting the tunnel wall echoed, and one could faintly hear the sound of breaking bones.

[My goodness, how strong is this village girl’s kick?]

The live broadcast had switched to night mode, and the audience could clearly see a man launching a sneak attack on Qing Li in the dark, only to be kicked away.

But astonishingly, the man was kicked against the tunnel wall. With a loud boom, pieces of broken stone scattered, and the man’s body, like a paper figure, was plastered against the wall, coughing up blood, even mixed with wriggling tentacles.

However, this was just an appetizer for the early stage. More and more people, or rather, corpses, humans parasitized by worms, had completely lost their life characteristics. They were more like controlled machines, brainless, thoughtless, numbly crawling from all directions, closing in on Qing Li and Chu Ci…

Once again, Qing Li threw out several fire talismans. The talismans stuck to the approaching corpses, instantly igniting a fierce fire, lighting up the narrow tunnel again.

The dense corpses surrounded them in a group, a scene… not so wonderful.

“Sorry, Dr. Chu, I don’t think missing a head will affect them being your experimental material.”

Qing Li suddenly smiled, her eyes illuminated by the raging flames. Her fair complexion flickered between light and shadow with the flames, and the corners of her lips curled up slightly, revealing a trace of excitement.

She dropped these words, and a giant axe appeared in her hand. Without a second word, she chopped towards the closest corpse.

“Spurt—”

The corpse’s head rolled off, and blood splattered everywhere.

Broken tentacles emerged from the corpse’s neck, attempting to return to the head.

Qing Li casually threw a fire talisman, setting the corpse’s head ablaze.

“Ah, ah, ah—”

A miserable, sharp scream came from the head as it rolled in agony on the ground, the flames quickly igniting other bodies as if fueled by gasoline.

The tunnel grew brighter.

Qing Li, present at the scene, could even smell the aroma of roasted meat.

Qing Li did not pause. With each swing of her axe, she severed the heads of four or five corpses.

One of the corpses was shorter, and the axe only sliced off half of its head, revealing the full appearance of the parasite hidden inside to the live broadcast.

It was a blood-red worm, its plump body resembling a tick engorged with blood. Numerous tentacles extended from its lower body, controlling the actions of the corpse.

With the loss of the skullcap, the worm sensed danger. It pulled out its tentacles, attempting to escape, but in the next instant, a talisman was attached to its plump body and instantly ignited.

?Ugh, that’s so disgusting, what kind of parasite is this, can an expert identify it??

?This kind of worm doesn’t exist in our world, it must be a specialty of the horror world.?

?Its tentacles oddly remind me of another type of parasite—the guinea worm.?

?Damn, why are there such disgusting things as parasites in the world.?

Qing Li quickly dealt with one after another, her methods too cruel and brutal compared to Chu Ci’s gentleness.

The scalpel in his hand seemed to come to life, and he made no superfluous moves. Each time he raised and dropped the scalpel, it perfectly pierced the corpses’ brains. An invisible black mist entered the wounds, and the corpses suddenly lost their ability to move…
