In the late afternoon, the city bustled with people enjoying lunch between work and merchants looking for a place to have lunch. As there was little wind, and the day was warm and sunny, seats were set up on the terraces in front of the restaurant awnings, and many people relaxed after eating with a cold drink.
Lisa and Shen Hu were also led to the terrace by the friendly owner and proceeded to eat a plate of tender steamed chicken, rice cooked in a rich vegetable broth, and steamed vegetables.
“It’s the restaurant’s star dish, so it’s very elaborate. Oh, this sauce is spicy and tasty, mistress,” Shen Hu, who seemed to enjoy the taste of the dish, wagged her tail and recommended the sauce to her mistress.
“I see…” Lisa, on the other hand, wasn’t tasting the food but was observing people passing by with vacant eyes.
“Eat it before it gets cold,” Shen Hu laughed as she took the fork from her mistress’s hand and brought it to Lisa’s mouth.
Lisa chewed it calmly without complaining and let out a silent sigh.
“If it’s about the pudding, I really apologize…”
“…I see.” Nodding, she took the fork from Shen Hu’s hand and returned it to her almost untouched plate.
“I can’t resist this anymore.” Shen Hu gulped down the remaining chicken and rice from her plate and moved to sit next to Lisa. “Here, you must be hungry.”
“…I see.” Although she was hungry, she couldn’t find the energy to eat on her own.
While Shen Hu fed her, Lisa languidly moved her head and looked towards the closed shop diagonally across the street. The shop was next to the one where she had bought the pudding yesterday.
The shop owner had disappeared since last night, and neighboring stores had hurried to cooperate by cooking the previous day’s preparations and putting them up for sale.
“In this city, people can really disappear at any moment…” Murmuring, she placed her palm on the back of Shen Hu’s hand and slid it gently.
Upon receiving the fork that Shen Hu released, Lisa resumed eating in silence.
“I’ll have to make sure that doesn’t happen tomorrow and onwards.” Shen Hu muttered to herself and got up from the table. “I’m going to borrow a few things, mistress.” Shen Hu returned to the seat across with a map of Naklabal and a notepad from Lisa’s bag, and she began to write on the map with a serious expression on her face.
As she continued with her meal, she must have reached her own conclusion. Lisa’s expression had returned to being somewhat cheerful.
“Well, are you full?”
The plates were cleared, and they were offered dessert drinks.
“Yes, I wanted pudding for dessert, but I’ll have it tomorrow.” Lisa nodded as she poured generous honey into her cold tea and looked at the map that Shen Hu had spread out.
“What about you?”
“I’m perfectly fine.” Shen Hu puffed out her chest and brought the map closer to Lisa.
On the map were points indicating the report given to them by the Sacred Cult Organization yesterday, the testimonies they confirmed themselves, evidence of empty houses, and the new information they obtained today. Shen Hu connected these points, and a coincidence emerged.
“I’m surprised. It exactly matches the underground channel…” Lisa bit her lip as she traced the connected lines with the tips of her fingers.
“After the boy’s testimony yesterday, it’s imperative to go check them. What do we do now, mistress?”
“Of course, we have to go now. Maybe we can still help.” Lisa placed the money on the table as she responded and hurried towards the main street.
The underground channels that extended throughout the city had inspection wells serving as entrances.
“There it is!” Lisa found it in an alley off the main street, and as soon as she stopped, she readied the magical shotgun she carried on her hip. “Stand back!” She abruptly pushed Shen Hu aside and pulled the trigger of the magical shotgun.
The metal cover that had been pierced was cruelly knocked down and fell to the ground with a loud thud.
“You’re as violent as ever.” Shen Hu, who had crouched down covering her ears, opened her eyes. “It seems like something could come out of there at any moment…”
The sewer mouth, with the cover removed, had a huge hole big enough for a person to fit through. Lisa, who was checking the stability of the thin ladder leading to the underground channel by shaking it, covered her nose at the rising smell.
“Oh. A splendid underground space extends through there. Finally, the boss stage.” Shen Hu, holding her nose, crouched down next to Lisa and happily peered into the vertical hole.
“What do you mean ‘boss stage’?”
“It’s assumed that the underground space is where the boss resides. Our level will also increase.” Shen Hu, chuckling, was genuinely enjoying herself. Even if they were trying to psych themselves up to enter the foul-smelling underground channels, that was an exaggeration.
“The boss stage… Certainly, there might be demons, but what basis do you have for saying that?”
“Well, my nose tells me.” Saying this, Shen Hu left Lisa behind and jumped into the hole.
“Hey, don’t go in there without me!” Lisa, who stayed behind, hurried to the ladder to follow Shen Hu, but the long and dark hole unexpectedly made her cautious.
