“Too slow.”
Before the Lesser Demon could close the distance, Lisa shot the remaining front limbs in quick succession. Its limbs, resembling a skinned human leg and a hand unevenly attached, received a strong impact from the magical shotgun and flew off from the base.
The Lesser Demon, now without its front and hind limbs, emitted a sound resembling a child’s laughter and turned around. Lisa, who had taken a few steps back with the magical shotgun ready, bit her lip upon seeing the arm that had been left on the back of the Lesser Demon. The inverted head continued to emit a sharp laughter, almost like a howl.
Sticky droplets of saliva splattered, and Lisa and Shen Hu stepped back further to avoid them.
“Mistress, stop!”
“Okay!”
Lisa readied her magical shotgun, and almost simultaneously, the remaining arm swelled beneath the flipped Lesser Demon.
“What?”
“Gahgahgah!”
The Lesser Demon jumped with incredible speed.
“Don’t even think about it!”
While retreating with Shen Hu, she continued to fire her magical shotgun. However, it was extremely difficult to avoid the eyeballs and only shoot at the head.
“Oh, darn it!”
The Lesser Demon was closing in closer than the reach of the magical shotgun.
“Shen Hu, step back.”
“That’s going to be impossible.”
“Huh…?”
Shen Hu’s back pressed against Lisa’s, who had her longsword on her back. Glancing quickly behind, countless laughter sounds reverberated from beyond the underground channel.
“We’re surrounded.” Shen Hu replied bitterly as she cast foxfire into the underground channel. The walls and ceiling of the underground channel, illuminated by purple flames, were covered by a swarm of Lesser Demons. “I thought they weren’t intelligent, but I forgot about their swarming habits. I feel like a heroine in a zombie movie.” Shen Hu, with a chuckle, tapped Lisa on the back of her head.
Lisa nodded silently, quickly loaded the magical shotgun with both magical bullets and lead balls, and rotated the cylinder again.
“The walls and the ceiling, even the bottom of the channel… Do you think they’ve already surrounded us?”
Lisa, who had pushed Shen Hu backward and looked from side to side, saw more Lesser Demons.
“I’ll eliminate them all in one go!”
Facing away from each other, they launched their attacks simultaneously.
A frenzied laughter rose as flames and magical bullets pierced through the swarm of Lesser Demons, followed by the sound of corroded limbs dragging and making noise as they fell.
“Get away from me, you filthy beast!” Lisa cut the front limbs of a Lesser Demon approaching quickly with her sword and simultaneously shot magical bullets. Feeling the heat of Shen Hu’s foxfire burning behind her, Lisa, who had fired all her magical bullets, crushed the head of the Lesser Demon with a lead bullet. The head of the Lesser Demon that was hit by the thrown lead bullet distorted and exploded against the walls and ceiling. Covered in canal mud, the stench of decay became even worse.
“It seems I didn’t have to shoot the eyeballs.”
A horribly ominous-colored eyeball rolled by her side.
“And over there?”
“I’ve burned them all.” Shen Hu proudly thumped her chest and patted Lisa on the shoulder.
“I wish magical bullets had that power.” Exhaling heavily, Lisa turned her back on the remains, which had lost the ability to move, and took a magical bullet from the pouch on her left hip to reload.
“They’re a nuisance, but they’re not our target. And are these guys the culprits?” Kicking away the chunks of putrefied flesh that blocked their path, she returned to the place where they first encountered the Lesser Demon.
“Wouldn’t it be great if the culprit approached us like that great detective…?” Shen Hu, who had summoned the foxfire again and held it in her hand, illuminated the mud-filled channel and the remains of the Lesser Demons while murmuring.
“I don’t know what that comment is about, but I don’t think the Holy Knights would have trouble dealing with Lesser Demons, right?”
“…I suppose so… Hmm…” While attending to Lisa’s murmurs, Shen Hu crouched down instantly, covering her nose, and illuminated the exposed organs of a Lesser Demon with foxfire.
It seemed it could still move despite being dismembered by a barrage of bullets, and the tendons and organs could be seen twisting in an ugly manner.
“…They’re even more disgusting than I imagined. What on earth are you doing?”
Shen Hu, who had examined various things that looked like digestive organs, tilted her head and let out a sigh.
“I guess I was wrong…”
“What do you mean?”
“Their digestive organs showed no traces of having eaten humans.” Shen Hu, responding seriously, pointed to her nose and asked Lisa to kiss it as a reward.
“Really, how annoying. Are you satisfied now?”
Lisa reluctantly kissed the tip of Shen Hu’s nose. Shen Hu quickly put her hand on the nape of Lisa’s neck and took her lips.
“…Wha… What…”
“I guess I still prefer these…” Smiling contentedly, Shen Hu began to walk lightly into the underground channel.
“…Darn it, what are you doing now…”
As usual, she caught her off guard with a kiss. Shen Hu’s affections didn’t choose the moment or the occasion. Lisa puffed up her cheeks and let out a deep sigh.
