The tsundere mistress and her fox-eared servant on a yuri journey to defeat demons
Chapter 6. The summon of Karin
“So, this was the culprit that wiped out the Hazelnigrad’s Sacred Knights and the people of Naklabal City.”
“Yes, that’s right.” Shen Hu nodded as she illuminated the remains of what used to be the typhoon with her foxfire.
The stagnant water of the underground canal, now without its roof, shimmered with a mysterious glow, reflecting the red of the evening darkness and the purple light of the foxfire.
On the surface of the stream floated an undigested piece of clothing that seemed to belong to someone who had been devoured by the typhoon.
“But we didn’t make it in time…” Lisa glanced at the white fabric, resembling an apron, and closed her eyes with a somber expression on her face.
The demon that had been nesting in the underground canal had been eradicated by the two, and a deafening silence began to descend with the onset of night.
“It’s not your fault. If you let your guard down, demons can catch you.”
“You don’t have to remind me. Can I borrow your foxfire for a moment?”
“Of course.”
Shen Hu breathed out towards Lisa. It turned into a fox with a small fire on its tail, perching on Lisa’s shoulder.
“Thanks.” Lisa, borrowing the foxfire, jumped over the pile of debris.
Shortly afterward, she returned to Shen Hu with her magic shotgun, turned the cylinder aside to remove it from the frame, and loaded the few magic bullets she had left.
“Ice crystal bullets and lightning bullets… I can’t use my longsword anymore, and that’s not very reassuring…”
The foxfire, once its purpose was fulfilled, jumped through Lisa’s arm to Shen Hu.
The moment it touched Shen Hu’s body, the small foxfire burst into purple flames and brightly illuminated Lisa.
“Now it’s my turn. Ta-dan! This is a new weapon~!” Shen Hu, looking self-satisfied, showed Lisa a brand-new longsword, which she had just taken out from somewhere.
“What!? What the heck was that!?” Lisa asked, unable to hide her surprise, and Shen Hu opened her mouth, drawing the shape of a pocket around her belly.[1]
“I would do anything for my beloved mistress.”
“Okay, okay. So you can make swords with magic?”
“That would be too simplistic…”
Shen Hu protested, who looked at her as if to say, “Oh, here we go again.”
“Don’t forget that we’re on a mission. As always, I can’t figure out what you’re thinking.”
Shen Hu’s words, always delivered in the same calm tone, sometimes helped her release tension, but for now, she remained silent.
Shen Hu grumbled quietly in frustration, but soon seemed to give up and sniffed next to Lisa.
“Is your nose still in good shape?”
It’s not like she had sealed her sense of smell, but she must have used some kind of magic to avoid the stench of the underground canals and the rotten smell of the demons.
“Now it works just a little better than yours.” In response to Lisa’s question, Shen Hu pinched her nose and nodded, grimacing in discontent as she looked ahead.
A foxfire flew, illuminating the area around the typhoon’s nest as if it were daytime.
“What is this…?” The light lasted only a moment, but even so, Lisa could clearly see that a large amount of blood continued further inside.
“I found it when escaping from the typhoon. It goes in the opposite direction of the city. Although it’s hard to believe that even an intelligent typhoon had a purpose other than eating humans.”
“So, are you saying there’s something else?”
“Exactly. Well, I’ve already understood the whole situation.”
She walked quickly past Shen Hu, who was making a gesture that seemed to hide something by pointing into the void.
“Let’s keep going; we’re running out of time.”
Lisa followed the trail of blood, venturing deeper into the underground canal, without needing to hear Shen Hu’s reasoning.
“Hmmm. So, this is where it surfaces…”
At the top of the inclined drainage channel, perhaps a remnant of an old drainage facility, there was a deep depression.
“It looks like an old castle on the outskirts of the city.”
Shen Hu crouched down to the ground, slightly behind Lisa, and stretched widely, gazing at the old castle in the moonlight.
“Haa, now I can breathe fresh air.”
Indeed, the air here was cleaner, and there was a faint scent of dry grass.
The magic that Shen Hu applied to them seemed to be wearing off.
“…Now is the time to start talking about what you claim to understand, you know?”
It was useful in case of emergency, but Shen Hu lacked a sense of urgency in general.
The trail of blood on the cobblestones leading to the old castle made it clear that someone had tried to bring blood or a body to the old castle.
“What do we do? Should we ask for help from the organization?”
“…Silence. Someone is coming.”
A small steam vehicle was approaching along the cobblestones.
Lisa and Shen Hu, who had been lying in a hollow and carefully watching the vehicle pass, stood up slowly as the sound faded away.
“That steam vehicle looks suspicious…”
“I wonder if they noticed something strange and came to check.”
“If that’s the case, it’s not the time to call for reinforcements.” Lisa stepped out of the hollow and ran on the cobblestones.
“What are you going to do, mistress!?”
“We’ll handle it ourselves.”
“…Really, one can never be too careful when it comes to demons, mistress…” Shen Hu, muttering bitterly and scratching her head, immediately ran after Lisa.
