If nothing else, Mo Feng was adept at blustering, and took Xiulian’s words seriously, “This is just the minor engagement gift, of course the actual dowry will be much more impressive.”

“How impressive? Will it be the highest-quality goods from your firm?”

Mo Feng was about to say more when he was interrupted by Ms. Liang, “We can’t promise that, after all, the firm is the Lu family’s, not ours. Mo Yan just helps out, and anything she takes she has to pay for.”

Xiulian sneered, “Isn’t Lu Junming’s firm her firm? You’re just trying to deceive us. Why are you being so miserly? My sister is going to be yours entirely eventually, are you heartbroken at the thought of giving away just this small amount?”

Mo Feng waved away the accusations with a smile of his face, and Ms. Liang stood up to say, “Then the engagement has been made official, and I’ll go first.”

Xiulian’s words obviously were not her own, but that of the entire family. They had just used her as a mouthpiece.

Ms. Liang nodded to Mr. Cao, and then swiftly left the house, Mo Feng following closely behind her. By the time Ms. Li and her husband had left the house, the two had already gone without a trace, so they turned and went back inside.

Mo Feng had ran to catch up with Ms. Liang, “Mum, why did you leave in such a hurry?”

Ms. Liang started criticising him, “What, do you want them to leech more benefits off us? They’re clearly a family of bloodthirsty vampires. I think this engagement should be called off, we should find a different wife for you,”

“Mum, I don’t want to, I like Xiuying.”

“What kind of drugs did she poison you with?!”

“No one respects me or holds me in any regard, they all call me a waste of space. Only Xiuying compliments me, she says I’m handsome and have a good future.”

Most of Ms. Liang’s rage quelled when she heard this. If Xiuying could bolster Mo Feng’s confidence and make him work for a better future, what was a little greed?

“Feng’er, you can’t just do what they say. They have their own motives, and you have to speak your mind.”

“Mum, I know. Don’t worry, Xiuying doesn’t have any bad intentions.”

It seems like my foolish son has truly been ensnared by that woman!

Then, they heard the sound of thunder. This was the first thunderstorm of spring, and the two hurried to get back home. When they reached the well, they grabbed a few more stalks of sorghum to cover the carriage, then walked back to the house with a bundle of firewood. Ms. Liang muttered, “The rain’s a good thing, it’ll make the medicinal herbs grow better. We can sell them for a good price this autumn, and use the money to build a new house.”

In Qianshui City, Mo Yan heard the sounds of thunder from the commercial firm. Since it was going to rain, there wouldn’t be many customers coming in, so she told Chuzi to hold down the fort before rushing out.

She passed by Ms. Hua’s courtyard, and arrived at the workshop. When she arrived, drizzle was already falling from the sky.

“Lu Junming, Chi Jie, it’s raining, it’s raining!”

The two exited the office and asked, “What’s so special about rain?”

Mo Yan pointed towards the sky with a grin, “The rain’s a good thing, did you forget what we opened this workshop for?”

Lu Junming dragged her inside, “Of course not, but it already rained two days ago in the Upper Valley.”

“Did your dad write?”

“Yeah, they were commanded to arrest bandits that day, so the raincoats came into use. The bandits thought there wouldn’t be any soldiers, so were acting brazenly. They didn’t expect my dad’s soldiers to all be wearing raincoats, so even though they’d been in the rain all day, their clothes were dry. Their combat prowess wasn’t reduced in the slightest.”

Mo Yan couldn’t wait to ask, “So, your dad successfully arrested the bandits?”

“Of course, and it should go without saying that he got awarded for it. His soldiers were bragging about our raincoats, and the soldiers who didn’t get them all requested that a raincoat be part of the army’s equipment.

The corner of Mo Yan’s mouth tugged up, and she smiled evilly, “That’s just the first step, the second is to outfit all of your father’s soldiers.”

“Do you have a third step?”

“Of course, the goal is to keep expanding, as much as possible.”

The rain outside was getting progressively heavier. Mo Yan had worn light clothing today and had been half-soaked outside, so couldn’t help but shiver. She went to pour herself a cup of tea from the tea set of Lu Junming’s table.

When she touched the teapot, it was cold to the touch, and she griped, “Why is it cold?” Then, she involuntarily let out a sneeze.

Lu Junming reached out to grab her hand, “Why is your hand so cold? You can’t catch a cold, I’ll ask Godmother to make ginger soup for you.”

He had just finished speaking when Ms. Hua came in with two bowls of noodles, “It’s a cold and rainy day, you should have some noodles to warm you up.”

She then noticed there were three people in the office, and quickly added, “There’s still some left in the pot, I’ll bring a third bowl up.”

Lu Junming asked, “Godmother, could you add some ginger to the third bowl? Mo Yan just sneezed, and I’m worried she’ll catch a cold.”

“Alright, I’ll just be a moment.”

Ms. Hua went to the kitchen and added some ginger to the third bowl of noodles, then came back up. Lu Junming handed Mo Yan a pair of chopsticks, “Eat it while it’s still hot.”

Mo Yan enjoyed eating noodles, and now it was cold, drinking a bowl of piping hot soup was basically a little slice of heaven for her.

After eating the bowl of noodles, she felt fatigued and didn’t want to move at all. Her eyelids felt heavy, and she wanted to sleep.

Mo Yan felt her own forehead, but it didn’t seem like she had a fever.

When she wanted to go back home, Ms. Hua stopped her, “The rain hasn’t stopped yet! How about you stay here for the night?”

“My sister’s getting married in a few days, I want to go back.”

Once Mo Ling got married, they wouldn’t be able to see each other more than a few times a year. The time they had together was limited and precious. In addition, the last instalment of payment for the furniture for the dowry hadn’t been paid off yet, and as it was supposed to be given tomorrow, Mo Yan was afraid there would be complications.

“Then ask Ze Wu to take you back!”

Ms. Hua called for him, but Lu Junming had stepped out of his office with a bamboo hat in hand, “Don’t bother him. I’ll send Yan’er back, and won’t be spending the night here.”

After which, he ran to the stables to hitch a horse to the carriage. The horse he chose was the red bay horse which Mo Yan had bought.

The carriage was driven out of the workshop, and went along the main road out of Qianshui City on the road to Chenzhong Village. Then, Lu Junming took off his bamboo hat and got into the carriage with Mo Yan.

“Why aren’t you watching the horse?” Mo Yan asked.

Lu Junming slumped back on the carriage seat with an exaggerated motion, “Don’t worry, this horse knows the way.”

No wonder he chose this horse, it was because it’s been on this route before often!

Post-translation notes: More drama, let’s go. As always, thanks for reading.
