Transmigrated Farmgirl's Scheme to Get Rich - Chapter 210
Disturbing the Nest
In the Humanity’s Smoke and Flames Alleyway, most of the people doing business were men. Even if there were women, they were usually just helping out from the side. It was only in Mo Feng’s storefront where Xiuying was the primary contributor.
Because they had old customers from the past, their storefront’s business wasn’t bad, and people came and went from there everyday in an unending stream.
In the blink of an eye, Zao’er was already one month old. According to the customs of the countryside, he had to ‘disturb the nest’, which was when the mother brought her child back to her natal family to live for a few days.
In ancient times, women who were married couldn’t casually return to their natal family and had to live together with their in-laws. They could only return if they were permitted to by their mother-in-law, so these customs were just to find an excuse for a daughter to return to their natal family.
After mid-morning, the weather had warmed up that day, so Zhong Cheng sent the mother and son duo back to their natal family via carriage.
As the joy of opening a new storefront still remainder, Ms. Liang was in a pretty good mood. When they arrived, there was a wide smile on her face, and she happily carried the child inside the house.
“Have you given an official name to the child yet?”
Zhong Cheng said, “Not yet, we’re not in a rush, and can decide it after slowly thinking about it.”
Mo Yan heard from Mo Feng that her sister returned home, so dropped everything and went home early to look at her nephew.
It’s true that you don’t have to worry about seedlings growing. Even though his birth was premature, Zao’er didn’t have any illnesses to worry about, and had grown white and plump in just a month. This was due to Mo Ling being able to produce milk due to the restorative medicine prepared by Mo Yan. This month was generally idle, so Zhong Cheng and Mrs. Jiang focused on caring for Mo Ling, and were very attentive towards her.
Seeing that both her sister and her son were white and chubby, Mo Yan felt especially good.
“Mother, go and kill a chicken! Sis has married, so whenever she returns to her natal family here, she’s a guest.”
Without waiting for Ms. Liang to say anything, Mo Ling said, “Don’t, I’ve eaten nothing but chicken or fish every day this month, and I’ve eaten so much of it that I’m getting sick of it.”
Mo Ling’s eyes spun, “Then let’s have goat hotpot! Goat meat is nourishing, and this way of eating is delicious. It’s just that sis can’t have ingredients that have too strong of a taste.”
Ms. Liang had heard her talk about goat hotpot before, but had never actually eaten it, “Alright, then take the carriage to buy the ingredients. Tell your brother to come back sooner too, and tell Xiuying to come to eat with us!”
After Mo Yan took the carriage out, Mo Ling asked Ms. Liang, “What is Feng’er doing in town?”
“They’ve rented a small storefront, and are selling the goods we used to.”
“Is Xiuying selling the goods there?”
“Yes.”
Mo Ling ‘tsked’, “You’re opening the storefront but letting someone else collect the money, it’s a one-sided transaction.”
“We’re going to be part of the same family sooner or later, and they’re in the same place anyways. She has to plan for her future.”
“She has to, but that mother of hers might not, you should still be more careful.”
Mo Ling had a point, and Ms. Liang decided to take a look in town in a few days, and see how much money the storefront could earn.
Mo Yan went to town to buy the goat meat, and then to Mo Feng and Xiuying’s storefront to grab ingredients and side dishes, taking the opportunity to tell them to come back home sooner. Mo Zenian from the storefront not far away could also hear them speak, but without Ms. Liang’s permission, Mo Yan didn’t invite him over.
After Mo Yan left, Mo Zenian handed two toys over to Mo Feng, “Feng’er, give these two toys to your sister’s son.”
Xiuying said, “Why not hand them over yourself, it happens that there are a lot of people today, auntie wouldn’t make your life difficult.”
This was acceptance from his future daughter-in-law, and Mo Zenian felt like he had hope of returning to the family, “Alright, then I’ll buy something else. What do you think would be suitable?”
“I think you should just buy something auntie likes.”
What women like are invariably clothes and jewellery. After thinking about it, in all of the years of his marriage to Ms. Liang, he really hadn’t bought her much of anything.
Mo Zenian went to the Three Rivers Commercial Firm and chose a silver hairpin for Ms. Liang embedded with two turquoise gems. It wasn’t expensive, but it didn’t look bad. He had an employee package it, then took it back to the village.
He had to tell his mother that he wasn’t eating at home, and when the old woman saw the item in his hand, her face fell, “You’ve already divorced, what are you spending so much money for? I haven’t seen you buy a single accessory for me before!”
“When I earn money, I’ll buy you something even better.”
After saying that, Mo Zenian took it to the front courtyard, and intentionally gave the silver hairpin to Ms. Liang in front of Zhong Cheng, “I’ve treated you poorly all these years, and with the celebration of having a grandson, I also bought you an accessory from Yan’er’s commercial firm. See if you like it or not, and if you don’t like it, you can swap it for another.”
Mo Yan heard this and ran out, “This hairpin isn’t bad, and suits you a lot. It’s not very expensive either, so just wear it for everyday use!”
Zhong Cheng and Mo Ling also agreed, and even Xiuying, who just entered, said it looks good. With the compliments of everyone, Ms. Liang felt joy in her heart and immediately put the silver hairpin on.
Xiuying handed the paper bag in her hand over, “Auntie, my nephew being a month old is a joyous occasion. I didn’t know what to buy, so I just bought some fabric. If someone can use it, feel free to take it!”
Ms. Liang went to light the stove. There wasn’t a bronze pot at home, so they used an iron pot instead, which was the exact same. Xiuying helped wash and cut the vegetables, and was busying herself like the head of the household.
After all of the preparations had been completed, the family sat down to have a meal. Xiuying acted like the head of the household at the dinner table, serving food to Mo Ling and Zhong Cheng. Mo Ling couldn’t help but say, “In the future, when we return to the natal family, it’ll be Xiuying hosting us.”
A tinge of embarrassment appeared on Xiuying’s face, “When sister returns home, I naturally have to serve you well. In this village, who doesn’t know how much you’ve done for this family?”
This sentence easily won over Mo Ling’s heart. There wasn’t anything special about women serving their natal family, and some people even think that it’s par for the course. This simple sentence caused Mo Ling to accept Xiuying as the wife of her brother.
“Mother, after the month is over, quickly tidy up the new house and let them get married! With a person helping you out at home, all of us will feel more at ease.”
Mo Feng had a smile on his face after hearing this, and placed a piece of goat meat in Xiuying’s bowl with his chopsticks. She lowered her head to eat, but felt something roiling in her chest. She tried to suppress it, but couldn’t help but want to vomit, so covered her mouth and ran outside the house to dry heave.
Mo Ling looked at Ms. Liang, “Mother, congratulations, you’re about to be a grandmother!”
Mo Feng was so shocked that he looked at the scene with wide eyes, and Ms. Liang poked his head with a finger, “This is your fault!”
But Mo Zenian said blissfully, “This might be your fault, but you can still become a grandmother, quickly let the two of them marry!”
Xiuying went back inside and took a seat, and Mo Ling said, “If you can’t eat the goat, don’t eat it, just follow your own appetite. We can make something else for you.”
“There’s no need, I’ll just have the dry rations and the side dishes. It might just be because I’ve tried this for the first time and I’m not used to it.”
Ms. Liang placed a side dish in front of her, “When you go back, don’t do any heavy labour, and be conscious of your body.”
She secretly looked at everyone else, and when she saw the joy on their face, her face instantly reddened, “Auntie, I’m full and want to go back.”
“What rush are you in, let Feng’er send you back.”
“There’s no need, the sky isn’t dark yet!”
Zao’er, who was inside the house, woke up, and Mo Ling put down her chopsticks to look after him, and Zhong Cheng followed. Ms. Liang said, “For us lowborn people, it’s enough for a husband and wife to be able to live together and die together.”
P.S. This is definitely a chapter, and I anticipate Mo Feng and Xiuying getting married soon. Thanks for reading!
