Transmigrated Farmgirl's Scheme to Get Rich - Chapter 251
Schism between Mother and Daughter
Early the next morning, Mo Ling fulfilled Mrs. Liang’s request and delivered everything she asked for.
Mrs. Liang started making side dishes jubilantly, making large pots of each, and after giving it a sniff, it smelled pretty good. She shouted energetically, ‘Freshly made side dishes with delicious flavour, come and try them!’
Business was indeed a bit better than yesterday, but by the end of the day, only half of the side dishes she had made had been sold. Now it was the height of summer, even if the side dishes weren’t directly exposed to the sun, they would still go bad easily.
Some customers who came over smelled the side dishes she made and complained, ‘You’re selling food that’s already gone off? If we get a stomachache, you can’t afford to compensate us.’
When the other customers heard, they simply avoided Mrs. Liang’s shop and went to Mo Ling’s shop to buy them instead.
Mrs. Liang smelled her own side dishes, and they were indeed a little rancid. She was clearly selling the same thing as Mo Ling, so why had her food gone off while Mo Ling’s hadn’t?
She went over and smelled Mo Ling’s food. None of it had much oil or salt, and no spice mixes were added, but her food hadn’t gone bad.
Mrs. Liang’s face darkened. ‘We’re selling the same things, so how come my food is rancid, but yours isn’t? Did you give yesterday’s leftovers to me?’
Mo Ling was busy working as she replied, ‘The food given to you was all freshly made early in the morning, they’re the same as the food used in my shop.’
‘Impossible, if it’s all the same stuff, why is my food rancid but yours is still fine?’
A customer happened to come to buy side dishes, and placed the vegetables they wanted into a small pot. Mo Ling weighed the portions before adding condiments to it and stirring.
Mrs. Liang understood her mistake after seeing what was going on, but was unwilling to admit defeat, ‘Why didn’t you tell me to put condiments after, I wasted that food for nothing.”
It wasn’t like Mrs. Liang had paid anything for that batch of food, and Mo Ling said, ‘I thought you already knew! If it’s gone bad, toss it away! Don’t let your customers get stomach aches.’
‘Prepare some more food for me tomorrow.’
‘You’re too busy working all on your own, just sell ready-made products, don’t handle these troublesome ones.’
Mrs. Liang glared at her. ‘I knew you were afraid that I would steal your business and deliberately sabotaged me. You ungrateful thing, I’m your mother!’
Mo Ling had to give Mrs. Liang freebies and even endure a scolding. Her heart was full of rage, and she retaliated, ‘Don’t you always say that a married daughter is like spilled water? I’m married now, we’re now of two families.’
When the crowd heard that they were mother and daughter, opinions varied on who was to blame here. Mrs. Liang had been infuriated by Mo Ling to the point of speechlessness, raised her hand and knocked over a pot which contained side dishes, ‘If our shop can’t continue being run, yours won’t be able to either. You aren’t even willing to take care of your brother, you heartless and ungrateful thing!’
‘You’re the one who can’t run a business, why are you blaming me? Even if I personally gift this shop to you, it’ll end up closed just the same.’
While the mother and daughter are quarrelling, Zhong Cheng had come back from delivering food. He didn’t dare yell at any one side, and could only persuade both parties not to quarrel. In the end, he was screamed at by both parties.
Fortunately, he was smart and rushed to the workshop to find Mo Yan. When Xiuying heard, she also followed to the shop.
Once Xiuying heard Mrs. Liang had done what she wanted to do but didn’t dare to, she mediated on the surface, but was clearly biassed towards Mrs. Liang. ‘Sister, mother needs to manage the shop and watch over her grandson every day, she’s already tired enough, don’t make her angry again.’
Mo Ling replied angrily, ‘She’s tired for the sake of you, and not for me. I’m just running my own shop, it’s not like I’m messing with anyone.’
Mo Yan ran over, ‘Sis, what’s going on?’
Seeing that there was finally someone on her side, Mo Ling complained, ‘She wanted to shut down my shop, just because my business is better than hers.’
Mo Yan asked, ‘Everyone rents their own shop and does their own business, so why is that?’
She was obviously questioning why Mrs. Liang was causing trouble, and Mrs. Liang became angrier, ‘You white-eyed wolf, you don’t take any of the money you make home and use it all to help out your sister. Don’t forget, your last name is Mo and their last name is Zhong. In the future, you’re getting on the sedan chair at the Mo family when you get married.’
Mo Yan, ‘The money I earn is mine, who I want to spend it on is my business. I have no intention of marrying, so what’s the point of talking about the sedan chair?’
‘All of the money you earn is also the Mo family’s, you can’t let outsiders spend it.’
‘They can make money on their own. Who acts like your son, waiting for others to pick up their slack?”
As soon as Xiuying heard about her husband’s fault, she wasn’t happy either, ‘What are you talking about, we also live on our own money. We haven’t used a single dollar of your money.’
She reached out and pointed to Zao’er’s stroller, ‘The stroller you bought for your sister’s son is so much better than mine. Do you really think I’m a fool?’
How calculating was she as a person?!
‘Sister-in-law, I bought your son’s stroller because I thought it wasn’t safe for him to sit in a stroller. Zao’er’s cart was bought by my sister herself, I didn’t spend a single dollar on it. If you don’t believe me, go and ask the manager of the carpentry shop.’
‘You’re just putting on a show in front of outsiders. You live together day in and day out, you can give them as much money as they want.’
Mo Ling said to Zhong Cheng, ‘We’ll close the shop and stop renting the courtyard tomorrow. Let’s not do this business and hinder Yan’er anymore. Even if we go home to make tofu, our life will not be worse than theirs.’
She was crying while packing up her things, but Mo Yan went over to stop her, ‘You rented the shop and paid the rent in full, and haven’t handed in a dollar less of tax. It’s not like you sell fake goods either, so why are you closing your shop? No, you have to keep running it.”
Mo Yan turned to Xiuying, ‘But you haven’t paid the rent for a few months. From now on, I won’t be renting to you, please pack up and leave immediately.’
Mrs. Liang cursed Mo Yan for being a bastard, and Xiuying said, ‘Didn’t you say that the rent would be on you?’
The people watching knew that the ones who really wanted to get advantages were the sister-in-law and mother, not the two sisters.
Mo Yan said, ‘Since I’m the one who rented you the shop, I have the final right to make this decision, please leave.’
Turning her head to see Cao Zhang and Duan Caimei, Mo Yan said, ‘Young master Cao, please go and ask the governing official to come here, just tell him someone here is attempting to provoke another.”
Cao Zhang didn’t go, but Duan Caimei said, ‘I’ve been thinking about running a small business! Since no one has rented this shop, I’ll rent it. Let’s go and sign the contract now.’
The onlookers started to accuse Xiuying and Mrs. Liang, while Mo Jing cried in the shop opposite. Xiuying went over and picked up her child before going back to the village, Mo Feng following closely.
Mrs. Liang was physically and mentally exhausted after these days, and clenched her teeth and stamped her feet. ‘Forget it, we won’t run an unprofitable and exhausting small business, it’s better to work in the workshop. Arrange a job for your brother in the workshop, you still need to let us live a good life.’
Duan Caimei laughed, ‘Madame, it turns out that your family’s livelihood depends on Yan’er alone, so is she the head of your family?’
Mrs. Liang scornfully said, ‘She’s just a girl, how can it be her turn to make the decisions?’
P.S. My new school is a lot more academically rigorous than the last one, so I sadly haven’t had much time to translate. Thanks for reading!
