The day Xi Xian died from her illness, she was still very slowly embroidering a pair of shoes for the emperor. Leaning under the window, she was threading the needle, while looking at the far sky from time to time.
The favor she had received during this past decade had come inexplicably. She didn’t have a free nor happy life, and she couldn’t even decide herself on what clothes and jewelry she could wear or whether she could go for a walk in the garden.
Every day, she was looking forward to losing favor, but the emperor’s favor never declined until her death. Her life was like licking sugar on the tip of a blade, at the end, the sweet taste of glory was long gone, and only despair remained in her terrified, shivering heart.
She was the only one the emperor favored at night. With a smile carrying love, he whispered in her ear her childhood name. He also regarded her as his exclusive property, and he kept her closely in the palm of his hand. He had had many women, but only his favor for Xi Xian never declined.
In the later years, they fell out of favor, and only Xi Xian accompanied the emperor day after day.
But she never had a child.
The emperor did not allow her to get pregnant, and her body was not fit to conceive offspring either. So, she spent her entire life in loneliness, without children nor family, living while only relying on the meager warmth of his body.
