Chapter 44

(16.3)

Xi Xian stretched out one foot and then thought about the cold reality that comes with tiptoeing on the ground.

Her legitimate sister’s eyebrows seemed to furrow. She took her embroidered shoes, lowered her eyes and helped Xi Xian put on her shoes, like she was doing something she was very used to do. Xi Xian, however, was so scared she shrank her feet, but her legitimate sister’s slightly cool hand grabbed the sole of her foot, the snow-white skin turned red because of her grip, and that’s how both of the shoes were put on her feet.

She just woke up, her feet were a little swollen, perhaps because of her poor health, but all year round Xi Xian had swollen feet, sometimes it was mild and sometimes more serious. Sometimes, it turned inexplicably swollen like a steamed bun, which troubled the emperor who had to massage her, otherwise she wouldn’t even be able to walk.

Xi Xian’s mind began to wander again, and her legitimate sister also stopped paying attention to her.

It was good that she was no longer forced to stay with the old matriarch, otherwise who knew what would happen afterwards ?

Perhaps, as her legitimate sister said, the old matriarch would take her to many grand banquets in succession, teach her very rigorous manners, and create many opportunities for her to become famous in Chang’an, so that everyone in the circle of noblewomen would know that she had perfect manners and a virtuous and eminent reputation, as well as many accomplishments to boost her good reputation.

If it happened like this, and that she was educated under the knees of the old matriarch, it would neutralize many of the inconveniences brought about by her identity as a concubine-born daughter. After all, currently in Chang’an, people didn’t discriminate between legitimate and concubine-born in the open, even if people cared about it, they would only consider it in their heart, for even between family members, they rarely spoke of it aloud, because such discrimination was the mark of bad upbringing.

Xi Xian could hardly imagine, if she really did this, and it went well, she would become an unique precious noble girl held on a god-like pedestal by people, and the level of shame would be no less than walking in the open wearing only a dudou.

After all, the protection of her family was the only piece of shameful clothing on her body.

Compared to those noble girls with an eminent reputation, apart from having a pure and beautiful face, she was actually ashamed to say that she was proficient in nothing, she was just an expert in acting coquettishly, to the point where perhaps no one could match her in this aspect, but she had nothing else she could compete in.

Because noble girls had to act with dignity and elegance, speak with measure and know when to pause, be kind and virtuous, all basic requirements from which they could then develop different temperaments and preferences.

Xi Xian failed in the first level, so there was no need to even consider the rest.

So she was very reluctant to be forced to do these things. For one thing, she did not want to rely on this to marry a powerful man. Those noble girls at the top even wanted to become the empress, but she just wanted to marry an honest man with a good financial situation, there was absolutely no comparison.

Suffering so much pain and hardship, without the slightest benefit, only a fool would agree.

Her legitimate sister did not care about her intention, just letting her go back to the small courtyard, while she was sitting idly in place with her eyes closed and no intention of leaving.

If another girl did this, it would be seen as unruly and rude behavior, but when her legitimate sister did that, she looked exceptionally unconventional and stylish.

Xi Xian felt that she was becoming sick, so she hurriedly lifted her skirt and went out.

However, when she returned to the small courtyard, Qiu Feng and Chun Cao were still there, but her concubine mother was no longer there.

Xi Xian’s eyes were wide open, a bit at a loss for words and she saw the maids looking at each other, biting their lips as they handed her a letter.

Née Qin could write, but only a few very simple words, the font she used was not very regular and consistent, so her handwriting was very easy to recognize. Xi Xian finished reading and then she started to stare at the window, looking at the shadows of the falling leaves, without saying anything.

Her concubine mother took her little brother and went to Jiangnan, because her father was going to be sent to Jiangnan for an official post there. As to what position he would have, her concubine mother also did not know, and didn’t know how to write it even less.

Her father didn’t go yet, for there was no matriarch in the residence in charge of the finances, but over there he had to pay for the land deed, as well as a few land fields that were waiting for some details, her father didn’t trust an intendant to take of it, so her concubine mother could only go to Jiangnan in a hurry to take care of the matters on that end, and she also took her brother along.

Her concubine mother told Xi Xian in the letter, not to worry about her, and also asked Xian Xian to listen to her words, and go to the old matriarch’s side. When she later returns to the residence to pick up Xian Xian, she couldn’t throw a child’s temper, otherwise her little brother, who will be older, would also laugh at her.
