~End of chapter 6

Could it be that her legitimate sister really had developed a deep sisterly love with this lowly daughter born of an outside mistress?

Xi Yao found it a bit unbelievable.

Xi Xian, in the end, couldn’t figure it out.

She had never been able to understand the logic behind her legitimate sister’s actions, she had always been unpredictable with her moods, she gave her a lot of hope, which she would then  extinguish in the blink of an eye.

So she would not be foolish and be grateful to her for such a thing. There was definitely some kind of reason behind it, which she didn’t know.

Chapter 7

(3.2)

Her concubine mother née Qin rambled on about the good points of her legitimate sister, while Xi Xian, beside her, didn’t care, not even listening. She just slowly took one lychee, intending to let Chun Cao peel it for her, but after a pause, she said, “No need, I’ll do it myself.”

In her past life, would it even be her turn to do these things?

As long as the emperor was here, he would not even allow anyone else to wash her feet, his noble hands that could take or spare lives, would peel oranges for her, peel lychees, would bath her with fragrant water, and during the night, under the dim candlelight, he would untie her dudou that was tied behind her waist. (TL’s note : a dudou is a woman’s underwear covering the chest and the belly)

But now she was determined, she was going to be independent, she didn’t want to rely on other people for every matter.

Xi Xian was not smart, but once she had decided something, she wouldn’t change her mind.

In the blink of an eye, two months passed. Xi Xian didn’t see her legitimate sister again, but Xi Yao and her mother were much more tranquil, which made her feel more comfortable. She also wasn’t as timid and cowering as she used to be in her past life.

Taking advantage of the fact it wasn’t too sunny outside, Xi Xian thought about going to the garden for a stroll. When her concubine mother learned about it, she nodded her head while holding on to her waist and gave her some words of instruction.

Xi Xian had been weak since the time she had been in the womb. During her past life, her health had been weak during all of her childhood and teenage years. Now, although nothing could be done about it, at the very least she wanted to walk more to benefit her health.

The Xi residence’s garden was very large, there were rugged and steep rocky hills, occasionally one could hear the sound of the streams flowing, with a murmuring sound, between the hills, down to the small lake, stirring up ripples on the surface of the lake. The carps inside were waving their tails, scrambling for food. On the side of the lake, dahlias were competing to be the first to bloom. The scenery was beautiful and colorful like a painting.

Xi Xian was tired of walking, so she sat on one side of the pavilion to rest. Not long after, bean-sized raindrops started to fall from the sky. Very quickly, the dark-green leaves beside her were twisted in half because of it. The raindrops loudly sprinkled down, as the surroundings turned blurry.

All of a sudden, a clap of thunder fell from the sky, and lightning illuminated the side of her face.

Xi Xian was so frightened that her palms started to turn sweaty, and her throat tightened. She immediately stood up, but her eyes were already red all around.

She had been afraid of thunder and lightning since she was a child, and every time this happened, her concubine mother would hold her in her arms and coax her. Later, the emperor also did so.

During this decade, every time it was like this, he would put aside the political affairs and hurry to come over, he would then hold the pale and shivering Xi Xian firmly in his arms. The calming and nostalgic sandalwood fragrance on the man’s body slowly managed to calm her mind.

The emperor would then mock her for being too stupid and weak, saying that she could only be pampered by him and protected by him.

The day she died, as she looked at the sky, she knew that it would rain, but she didn’t wait for him to come.

Xi Xian thought that this was fate.

The gods in heaven couldn’t stand to see him be so rampant and overbearing for a lifetime, there would always come a time for them to deliver punishment.

Suddenly hearing a voice, Xi Xian turned her head. That’s when she saw her legitimate sister, standing outside of the pavilion.

Her legitimate sister, Xi Heng, was alone holding an oil paper umbrella. There were some precious jade, golden, and pearls hairpins on her hair bun, she looked luxurious and noble but also very icy-cold, it made her face look even more cold and exquisite, like she was unreachable.

Her legitimate sister’s looks were very androgynous, the bridge of her nose was too high compared to other girls, the sockets of her eyes were a little deep, her lips were thin, when she looked at people, she gave an impression of playfulness, like she was joking, it was very easy for people who didn’t know her to misunderstand that she was very easy to get along with.

But in fact, her legitimate sister rarely joked with people.

Sometimes she sounded like she was carelessly joking, but she would always, in a moment of inadvertence, suddenly reveal her sharpness, she was so scary it made people’s backs turn tense and break out in cold sweat.

Xi Xian, supporting herself on the mottled red pillar, was standing on top of the steps. That’s when she realized, they were both in their teenage years, yet her legitimate sister was very tall, her body was slender and upright like a pine tree, she was much more nimble and straight than any girl of their age she had seen.

Her legitimate sister’s light-colored eyes were deep and cold, she looked like she was far too high to reach, but her voice sounded sullen and gloomy as she reprimanded her: “What are you doing standing there in a daze? Come down!”

Another thunderclap fell from the sky. Xi Xian’s eyes became even redder, but her legitimate sister clutched her hand, not allowing any resistance, and pulled her with force under the cover of the umbrella, with one hand.

Her legitimate sister also had a sandalwood scent on her body, and Xi Xian’s neck couldn’t help but turn stiff.
