[Vol. 4] Chapter 85: To Live or Die, That is the Question
Turning back, Violet gently patted the head of a certain frightened young village girl beside her, while comforting her, Violet casually explained with a smile.
“Don’t be in such a hurry. It’s not easy to pry open the mouth of someone deeply entrenched in the underworld, especially when it comes to real secrets. If he suspects that he holds the only clue we have right now, he might use it to blackmail us for his own escape. I don’t have the patience to spend so much time negotiating with him.”
Listening to the seemingly reasonable words of Miss Priestess, Lan couldn’t help but doubt herself a bit. She carefully observed the man lying motionless on his chest, his body almost dyed into a pool of blood, before sighing and saying somewhat helplessly,
“I understand what you’re saying, but is there a possibility that he’s really dead now?”
Violet mysteriously smiled.
“Well, you never know. Just keep watching.”
“?”
Just as the acting lord was perplexed by the overly confident demeanor of the black-haired girl, a sudden burst of gasping and coughing, as if a person who had been drowning for a long time had been suddenly pulled back to shore, came from the cell.
“Guh! Cough, cough, cough, cough, cough…!”
“???”
Following Lan’s incredulous gaze, Oliver, who had clearly been pierced through the heart, blood flowing everywhere, seemingly unable to die any further, unexpectedly propped himself up with his hands and struggled to sit up!
The twin-tailed girl was shocked, but Violet just gave her a reassuring look. Lan barely restrained the impulse to show her turbulent emotions on her face, trying hard to maintain a calm demeanor for the time being.
“What is this…?”
As the person involved, Oliver seemed more confused than anyone else. He blankly lowered his head, looking at the prison uniform stained red with blood and the undamaged skin below.
When he met the silver-blue eyes of the black-haired girl in front of the cell, which seemed to be smiling but without any smile, he suddenly exclaimed a few times as if he remembered everything. He screamed in shock several times, his pupils contracting as he staggered back in dismay.
“Ah!!! You! You, you, you…!!!”
“How is it? Does the taste of death still linger in your memory, as refreshing as a spring?”
The girl continued to smile, but to the man, her smile seemed as chilling as a demon from hell. Despite her perfect and flawless body and face, even the inherent aura of holiness couldn’t conceal the fear engraved deep in his heart by death.
Oliver trembled uncontrollably. The endless despair and anxiety he felt as he neared death were horrors that those who had never experienced them could never understand.
Even as a mafia boss accustomed to bloodshed, he thought he had long overcome and prepared for such feelings, but he never wanted to experience that taste again, not even once.
What was that just now? A hallucination created by demons? Or some malicious curse that induces extreme fear?
Oliver didn’t know. He didn’t even have the courage to look down at the viscous blood stains that should have taken away a human life completely.
His soul had been shattered by the reality of death.
He dared not ask questions that were already deeply shadowed in his mind, like “Who are you?” or “Why are you asking these questions?” Oliver just trembled, emitting a pleading and mournful cry from his throat.
“What… What do you want to know?! I’ve already confessed all the information I should have during the interrogation a few days ago!!!”
“Is that so? Well… it seems like there are still some things you shouldn’t have said yet, I’m curious, so could you please… tell us everything?”
The black-haired girl raised her seemingly harmless, fair, and delicate hand, and golden light danced around her fingertips like elves, as if performing a graceful dance. But at the sight of this, Oliver’s already pallid face turned even paler.
“Ah! Please! Please don’t hurt me! Let’s talk properly! Let’s talk properly!! You want to know why the Ghost Thief Group was able to find that Moon Shadow Clan cub, right?! I’ll tell you everything!!!”
The golden light suddenly dissipated, and Miss Priestess nodded satisfactorily, once again revealing that ambiguous expression that seemed like a smile but wasn’t quite.
“Very well. I suggest you don’t try any tricks, because I won’t give you a third chance.”
“Y-yes, I won’t… I dare not…”
As if completely resigned, Oliver trembled as he tried to wipe the cold sweat from his forehead with his hand, but because his palm was covered in blood, the more he wiped, the more smudged it became, making him look even more disheveled with his already unkempt appearance.
Seeing that he couldn’t clean himself up properly and not wanting to keep Violet waiting any longer, the man reluctantly put down his hand and, avoiding the gaze of the black-haired girl, which wasn’t fierce but still made him unable to meet her eyes directly, he stammered out.
“To talk about this matter, we have to go back about half a year ago. At that time, something big happened within our Ghost Thief Group. The former leader, Big Aye, suddenly and unexpectedly died, throwing the organization into chaos, on the verge of disintegration.”
“At this time, a mysterious man appeared. He called himself the Summoner. Not only did he possess strange and powerful abilities himself, but he could also freely control various types of monsters to serve him.”
“The Summoner forcibly gathered the dispersed members of the Ghost Thief Group and killed all those who intended to oppose him. In the end, he elected a woman named Eileen within the gang to become the new leader. Fearing the power of the Summoner, no one dared to oppose.”
“Although Eileen became the leader, this woman rarely appeared to manage affairs. Even many members of the gang hadn’t seen her in person. Basically, as the deputy leader of the Ghost Thief Group, I managed and organized the business, both above and below ground. Only for major matters, we needed to consult the leader…”
“Wait.”
“Uh, yes, do you have any questions?”
Violet had just begun to speak when Oliver immediately shut his mouth obediently. After this little buffer, he seemed much calmer now, and his face even showed a suitable degree of flattery.
Perhaps it was his understanding of bowing to real strength that allowed him to survive the upheaval within the Ghost Thief Group and even rise to the position of deputy leader.
“Did this Summoner you mentioned ever mention his name?”
“As for his name…”
Oliver tapped his head, trying hard to remember, then suddenly exclaimed.
“Ah! Yes, although that man never publicly disclosed it, there was one time when Leader Eileen had a private conversation with him, and she referred to him as Siel. I happened to overhear it as I was there to report something.”
Was he really the same person…
Siel was probably a nickname. [Summoner Alchemist] Siel Silvester Bullwer. It seemed he was the one really pulling the strings behind the scenes, and there must have been some close connection and cooperation between Eileen and him.
In this case, the origin of the artifact ?Seal of Demon’s Box? also got a reasonable explanation. It meant that the Ghost Thief Group was nothing but a tool and a blade pushed onto the stage.
“Did this Summoner stay with you guys afterward?”
“No, the Summoner is very low-key and mysterious. After nominating Eileen, he quickly disappeared. But he probably didn’t truly leave, because Eileen is just an ordinary person without much power.”
“Without the Summoner’s support behind the scenes, she couldn’t have held onto the position of leader. Even if the Summoner himself isn’t there, he must have left her some kind of backup.”
Looking somewhat clueless, Oliver explained.
“In fact, later on, there were people who saw Eileen being incompetent and isolated, intending to start a rebellion to overthrow her. But these people, almost without exception, met unexpected deaths before they could act, just like Big Aye did back then.”
