[Vol. 5] Chapter 294: The Prophecy of the God of Slaughter
“What! You’re saying the Demon Lord of Slaughter is about to descend?!”
In the private chamber where only the two Saintesses conversed, Philomena’s eyes widened as she abruptly stood up.
But in response to the pink-haired Saintess’ shocked expression, Yuna Summerfield, who is more seasoned in both experience and age, merely took a calm sip of warm tea, letting the mild bitterness and faint aroma linger in her mouth before nodding slightly.
“This has already been confirmed. Judging from the current situation, the true aim of this demon war is to gather enough nourishment through bloodshed and, by means of a sinister ritual, create the opportunity for [Slaughter] to descend upon our world personally.”
“As for the outcome of the war itself, whether the demons win or lose doesn’t truly matter. So long as their deity can descend, in this world…”
“H-how could this be…”
Sinking back into her seat, visibly unsettled, Philomena attempted to follow Yuna’s example by sipping her tea to ease her nerves. But her trembling fingers couldn’t seem to hold the cup steadily.
The very name “Slaughter” carried a terrifying weight.
Honestly, even counting the earliest wars, the Holy Empire has only ever fought the armies under [Slaughter]’s command. Even high-ranking [Slaughter]’s warriors rarely appear in this world.
Due to the suppression and resistance of our world’s energy, the stronger an otherworldly being is, the harder it is for them to remain here. Anything beyond the level of a pseudo-god is normally prevented from entering without special means. Not to mention, a demon lord of such horrifying strength.
Aside from the appearance of an [Corruption] incarnation three hundred years ago, this would be the first time in history for a demon lord to descend in person.
But Philomena wasn’t entirely inexperienced. After a moment of panic, she quickly realized some inconsistencies.
“Lady Yuna, if [Slaughter] could descend into our world just by triggering war, why didn’t it happen in previous demon wars? Why choose this particular moment?”
“Also, how did you know about this? And how much time do we have left?”
After hearing the three questions in quick succession, the Bright Light Saintess did not seem annoyed at all. Instead, she smiled in appreciation.
“To be able to quickly grasp the key issues in such a short time, Lady Philomena truly possesses the psychological qualities and thinking ability that match the Redemption Saintess. This is excellent.”
Seeing the pink-haired girl looking somewhat embarrassed, unsure how to respond to the praise, Yuna placed her tea cup back on the table and straightened her posture.
“As for why [Slaughter] didn’t descend in the same way before, the answer is actually quite simple. Demon lords are powerful beings with strength comparable to that of gods, and the world’s energy repels them more strongly than any other demon.”
“Even if they force their way through in various ways, it would still place a heavy burden on them and cause significant losses. No one would want to undertake such a thankless task. This is true for any deity.”
“…Unless there is some kind of incentive here, something so tempting that it can fill that loss or even go beyond it, that would make those calculative beings take the risk and make such a reckless move.”
“The [Corruption] incarnation from three hundred years ago descended for this reason, and now [Slaughter] is no different.”
Seeing Philomena furrowing her brow, as if wanting to speak but holding back, Yuna smiled and continued.
“Of course, the target of Eloun the Demon Lord of [Corruption] was not the same as [Slaughter]’s this time, and the benefit was not as straightforward.”
“Moreover, the former was more cautious and weighed the pros and cons more heavily, so they only sent an incarnation and tested within acceptable limits. That was why the Bright Light Saintess at the time was able to repel it at the cost of her life.”
“But Sluthel, the Demon Lord of [Slaughter], is different. It is far more reckless and irrational. If I’m not mistaken… it will likely descend in its true form, or something close to it, bringing almost all of its power.”
“It will be a true deity, an existence known as the [God of Slaughter].”
“[God of Slaughter]…”
The Redemption Saintess pondered over a few words before raising her head, her expression serious.
“Your Highness Yuna, you seem to be particularly knowledgeable about these hidden events and high-level existences.”
The Bright Light Saintess nodded, sensing the underlying meaning in Philomena’s words.
“Everyone has their own secrets, Lady Philomena, you have yours, and I am no exception. But now, we are at a critical juncture, a time when we truly need to cooperate deeply. I am willing to share with you to show my sincerity.”
“[Wing], come out.”
“Mm.”
A flurry of white feathers fluttered down, transforming into a pure, four-winged, white-haired figure in the light. She quietly stood behind Yuna, slightly nodding, and gestured to the surprised Philomena.
“This is [Wing], who could be considered my guardian. Seeing her, I believe Lady Philomena has already guessed her identity… Yes, Wing is an angel, and not just any angel, but one with pure blood, a fully grown mythological angel.”
“A grown… angel…”
The pink-haired young Saintess instinctively opened her mouth, realizing the significance of this.
“This Miss Wing and those two…”
Before she could finish, Wing’s ethereal voice, like celestial music, slowly echoed in the room.
“I have no direct connection with those two juvenile angels. In fact, I am the last pure-blooded angel in the world… As for them, they are likely a new generation transformed through unknown method, so their age should not be very great.”
“I… I see.”
Yuna naturally continued after the brief exchange between them seemed to conclude, still smiling.
“The angel race is quite special. They must rely on attachment and the faith of gods to sustain their existence, or else they will degenerate. So, as the era of the gods came to an end, the angel race gradually disappeared from history.”
“Wing is a wandering angel. When I met her, by sheer coincidence, I gave her some help to maintain her existence, so Wing decided to temporarily follow and become my guardian.”
“Much of the information regarding the past has been told to me by Wing… Lady Philomena should know that mythological beings possess [heritage memories], right?”
“I see now…”
The Redemption Saintess nodded in understanding.
“Then, how much time do we have left?”
Yuna provided the answer she had already prepared.
“At most, three days.”
Though she had already mentally prepared herself, when Philomena heard the news, she instinctively gripped the handle of her teacup tightly. She couldn’t help but feel a momentary tremor, and her expression darkened with worry.
“What should we do? How can we fight a true god? Will the Goddess help us? Or… does Miss Wing…?”
“I can’t win. Although I am a grown mythological being, there is still an insurmountable gap between me and the [God of Slaughter].”
“…….”
In the silence, Yuna glanced vaguely at a spot behind Philomena where there was nothing, then spoke again.
“Don’t be too quick to despair. We still have a chance… Lady Philomena, the [Ring of Salvation] should still be with you, right?”
“Ah… Yes, I have it. What’s the matter?”
“Time is limited, so let’s talk while we walk. We need to head to the eastern part of the Sarnos Province.”
