[Vol. 6] Chapter 13: Kid, You’re Still Too Young~
“Troublemaker…?”
This peculiar phrasing, with its personal flair, left Zeng Xianzhi puzzled, though he could only partially grasp its meaning. Violet, however, showed no intention of elaborating further. Instead, she patted the shoulder of the nearby Zeng Zhuang once again.
“Everyone except him, step back a little.”
“Wait a moment, Miss Violet. Could it be that, like those two masters, you are also…?”
“Ugh, don’t ramble! Midnight is almost here, and if something happens because you delayed me, I won’t be taking responsibility.”
The young woman impatiently waved her hand, and with a flick of light energy, she effortlessly pushed the still-skeptical Village Chief to the side.
Violet understood that her abrupt appearance and Zeng Xianzhi’s subsequent suspicions were reasonable. However, she had no intention of taking the time to explain herself.
Zeng Zhuang, on the other hand, seemed utterly clueless about the situation. Scratching his head in confusion, he asked without the slightest guard:
“Lady Fairy, did I do something wrong?”
“I already told you, I’m not a fairy!” Violet sighed, shaking her head with a smile. “If you really want to call me something, you can call me a *Priestess*.”
The Priestess chuckled and continued:
“Don’t worry, it’s nothing serious. Hmm… to explain it in terms you’d understand here, it’s something like being *possessed*. Only, this ‘possession’ is more advanced and subtle. It doesn’t show any signs under normal circumstances, so even you wouldn’t have noticed.”
“Uh…”
Seeing Zeng Zhuang still nodding with a dazed expression, Violet didn’t seem to mind. Instead, she took out her elegant and ornate [Eternal Scepter of the World’s Heart] and gently placed it on Zeng Zhuang’s shoulder.
She softly parted her lips.
“Let the holy light shine upon us.”
Golden light, as thin as gossamer, cascaded from the tip of the sacred staff, seeping into the body of this simple, middle-aged woodcutter from the mountain village.
One second, two seconds, three seconds…
“…?”
Just as Zeng Zhuang began to feel puzzled by the lack of any visible changes, the other villagers who had been forced to retreat to a distance also looked on in confusion.
Suddenly, an unexpected change occurred.
“AAAAHHHH!!!”
As though subjected to the searing torment of flames or the agony of boiling water poured over his skin, a ghastly green mist began to escape desperately from Zeng Zhuang’s body, growing thicker as it emerged. The air was filled with a series of piercing, wretched wails.
“Finally willing to show yourself, huh?”
Accompanied by the black-haired girl’s mocking laugh, the eerie green mist fully escaped the range of the holy light. It coalesced into a roughly humanoid form, emitting a raspy, crow-like screech filled with anger.
“Who the hell are you? What kind of power is that? You’ve managed to break through my fog concealment!”
Violet pulled back her staff and motioned for Zeng Zhuang, who was no longer useful… ahem, who had been neutralized from the threat, to fall back. Then she stepped forward and said…
“Honestly, I was trying to give you some dignity, but let’s be real, your possession technique isn’t exactly impressive. Did you really think I just randomly picked someone nearby and happened to stumble across Zeng Zhuang by chance?”
“I could smell that weird presence from miles away, something so out of character for him. I mean, seriously, nowadays anyone can call themselves a master and claim to have some secret technique or whatever?”
The green mist trembled violently, clearly infuriated by the priestess’s sharp tongue, but it struggled to come up with any meaningful retort. Resorting to the classic tactic of bluff and bluster, it retorted stiffly.
“Y-You insolent child! How dare you speak so brazenly!”
“Oh? Brazen, is it?” Violet replied with a smirk. “I’ve already figured out your plan. That’s why I chose to confront you outright.”
Her smile deepened with unmistakable satisfaction as the black-haired girl tilted her head back, gazing up at the seven stars shining ever more brightly in the sky.
“Your sacrificial ritual must require specific timing and a particular environment to succeed, right? Otherwise, you wouldn’t have gone to the trouble of finding an opportunity, sneaking into Zeng Zhuang’s body while he wandered alone in the wilderness, and using him as cover to remain hidden until now.”
“Even though you’re just a minor entity, if your goal was merely to deal with a small, ordinary village like this one, you should have had much easier methods at your disposal.”
Resting her chin on one hand, Violet feigned a thoughtful expression.
“Let me guess… your overall plan was probably to tamper with the village’s food or water supply, planting seeds of *yin energy* inside the villagers. Then, you’d use the surge of *yin energy* at the year’s end, when such forces naturally increase, to trigger those seeds simultaneously, achieving a quantity-to-quality transformation that would result in some special effect.”
“It looks like you spent quite a bit of time preparing. During this period, you carefully adjusted the levels of *yin energy* in each villager to prevent any premature anomalies or suspicions that might lead to disturbances and cause you to miss the crucial moment of the thousand-year night.”
“But even the wisest can overlook something. My guess is that you couldn’t monitor Zengjia Village and Zeng Zhuang’s situation constantly. So, as the year-end approached and the surrounding *yin energy* began gathering, the excess *yin energy* in Zeng Ergouzi’s body unexpectedly erupted ahead of your schedule, resulting in the so-called [Dog Demon] possession incident.”
“And this incident just so happened to involve Zeng Zhuang.”
“Realizing that your plan had deviated, you hurried to cover up the true cause behind these coincidental events. You secretly removed the warding talisman from Zeng Ergouzi’s door, creating the illusion that the disturbance was caused by external malevolent forces.”
“But during Zeng Zhuang’s struggle and shouting, a few other villagers were drawn to the scene. This chain reaction caused the *yin energy seeds* within them to be influenced by the same external leak of *yin energy*, which led to their delayed activation shortly afterward.”
“However, the struggle and shouts between Zeng Zhuang and Zeng Ergouzi attracted several other villagers. As the saying goes, ‘set one thing in motion and everything else follows.’ This was exactly what the mastermind behind it all had planned. You used this opportunity to spread the yin energy seeds throughout the village.”
“You grew increasingly anxious as your plan began unraveling. And then I appeared out of nowhere, an unidentified individual who easily dispelled the *yin energy*, making you even more cautious.”
“Conveniently, I wanted to see what you were up to. To avoid further provocation, I simply followed Zeng Xianzhi’s suggestion and left the village, giving you space to act freely.”
“Sure enough, as soon as I left, you found a way to draw Zeng Xianzhi’s attention to the abnormalities in those villagers.”
“To ensure the festival proceeds smoothly, Village Chief had no choice but to temporarily subdue those few individuals with medication and confine them to their rooms. He’s probably planning to head to Yangyuan City for help once tonight is over.”
Violet shifted her gaze to Village Chief, who was listening in stunned silence, and offered him a faint smile.
“Is that right?”
“Uh… that’s exactly what happened…”
After confirming her suspicions through Zeng Xianzhi’s admission, the priestess subtly glanced at the sky before turning her attention back to the humanoid green mist hovering not far away.
—A polite yet mocking smile played on their lips.
“At that time, night had already fallen. To ensure that those who weren’t at the festival, your intended ritual site, could still sync their *yin energy* explosion with the crowd here, you deliberately left Zeng Zhuang’s body. You then ran off to remove the warding talisman from Village Chief’s door before sneaking back to tail Zeng Xianzhi and return to your hiding place.”
“You probably thought you’d been very discreet, but unfortunately for you, I witnessed your little exit-and-return performance from start to finish~”
At this point, even the most stubborn of foes would find it difficult to deny the truth.
The ghastly green mist visibly quivered, as if shaken and incredulous at how perfectly the black-haired girl’s words aligned with reality. However, it quickly calmed itself.
“Little girl, are you one of those sent by the [Yin-Yang Division]?”
“The [Yin-Yang Division], huh…”
The name didn’t come as a surprise to Violet. She’d already heard similar terms from those two mysterious women before. In a sense, the green mist’s guess wasn’t entirely baseless. It simply had the wrong target.
Of course, the priestess had no intention of enlightening her enemy.
The white-robed girl raised her elegant, holy staff and pointed it at the eerie green mist.
“Why don’t you guess~?”
“You’re courting death!”
