Chapter 108

The sun gradually rose. Mu Qing watched Li Mang dig the ditch for a while, and then remembered the preys in the cave that still had to be taken care of. She greeted him and then headed back.
What Li Mang hunted early in the morning was a plump rabbit and what looked like a racoon dog with fluffy fur. Mu Qing guessed that both the rabbit and the racoon dog had been caught in their own dens.
Fortunately, they were no longer moving, which was why she dared to carry them over to the stream to cut them open.
All of this used to be Li Mang’s business. But now she had to learn how to do it.
With the knife in her hand, Mu Qing cut open the animal’s abdomen and removed the internal organs, then slowly peeled off the fur, scrubbed the blood and remnants of meat left on it, and then put it on the side to dry.
The weather was getting cold, and they needed fur for the winter. Even rabbit skins would be good, with a few more saved up, she could sew them into larger pieces.
Her movements were a bit clumsy, so it took her some time to clean it up, she put the meat on the rocks by the stream and cut it into pieces, wrapped it in leaves and put it back by the fire in the cave, saving it for today.
The ground of the valley was full of dead branches and leaves, Mu Qing picked up a lot of them and spread them on the ground to dry in the sun. Once dry, they could be used as combustible for the fire.
While she was doing this, she made several trips to Li Mang’s side in between. Bringing him water in a coconut shell, wiping down his sweat, or actually nothing at all, just to check on him.
The trench was already dug up to the level of his knees, with just an eye estimation, it seemed about three or four meters in diameter.
The sun was high up, shining on his naked and sturdy back that was emitting light. That light was coming from his sweat being refracted.
Li Mang drank the water in the coconut shell in one gulp and waved at her to go back and rest.
Mu Qing obediently went back. But instead of resting, she cut a lot of vines, used the knife to cut them into thin strips and then tied them together, to make long ropes. When there were enough thin ropes, she started to weave a net.
Weaving a net was not difficult, as long as the ropes were knotted in order on a weft line, and the vertical ropes were interlaced and knotted, layer by layer.
She managed to make a very long net.
When she was cutting open the preys just before, she noticed that there were fish swimming through the stream from time to time, and they would even jump up to the surface of the water when they encountered a swift current.
She didn’t have Li Mang’s ability to catch fish with a sharp wooden stick, but she could use a net.
Mu Qing went into the water and laid the net between two rocks by the stream.
When she was done laying the net, she realized that Xiao Hei, who had been following her around, had disappeared. Thinking that it had most likely slipped away to play on its own again like the night before, and that it would naturally come back later, she didn’t think much of it. But just as she was about to leave, she heard a faint whimpering sound coming from in front of her, sounding as if it was in some pain, so she hurriedly looked for it.
Mu Qing walked along the mountain wall to a far corner, where she saw that Xiao Hei was actually trapped under a large bunch of thistles. She was unsure how naughty he had to have been to dive right into it, but now that it wanted to come out, it was hooked by the sharp thistles, which was why he was anxiously whimpering.
Seeing Mu Qing coming, Xiao Hei whimpered with even more rhythm, and his black eyes were pleadingly looking at her.
