6-6. Side – Kenra and Gyou-san-

“Uh, um, excuse me…”

“Ye?”

“Ye…? No, that’s not it… Sorry if this is rude, but, Gyou-san, can you fight?”

“Oh, ya doubt meh? leave it to meh, aah can still keep up with the youngsters.”

“Could you speak the same way you do with Uchikage-sama?!”

Gyou spoke effortlessly with a thick accent, which made it very difficult for Kenra to understand. He could barely catch the words, but couldn’t make sense of them.

Kenra knew Gyou was this kind of oni, but dealing with him in person was exhausting. He sighed deeply and looked at Gyou.

Standing straight, Gyou was taller than Kenra. Instead of his usual chef’s outfit, he wore a dark blue judogi-like garment. The wide sash tied in a large bow at his waist stood out.

(How does this guy fight barehanded…? Especially against angels…)

Gyou didn’t appear to be carrying anything. Kenra wondered if he had hidden weapons, but there was no sign of that. Nothing in his pockets or sleeves indicated any hidden items.

Kenra, skilled in detecting concealed weapons, couldn’t spot anything unusual about Gyou. His movements were natural and unencumbered.

Kenra had never seen Gyou perform any unarmed combat techniques. His usual gait was that of an elderly person, and he wasn’t even carrying his usual cane. Kenra was inwardly panicking, wondering how Gyou planned to fight.

Kenra himself wasn’t sure if he could handle an angel. Despite his enthusiasm, his combat experience was limited. He knew his praised skills were largely due to his good form rather than actual battle prowess. In the current situation, an attack could come from any direction.

While Kenra kept his guard up, Gyou turned to him.

“Kenra, calm down a bit.”

“But…”

“Just reckon lak you’re fishin’. If ya exude too much hostility, the enemy will be own guard.”

“Well, if you say so…”

As soon as Kenra relaxed, he heard the sound of something cutting through the air. His expression changed instantly, and he deflected the incoming arrow with a swift draw of his sword. He glanced toward the direction the arrow came from and saw two angels aiming their bows at them.

(Alright, that’s more like it.)

Gyou had been worried about Kenra’s passive demeanor, but seeing him switch to battle mode dispelled his concerns. Kenra appeared to be the type who performed well under pressure. Gyou knew that those who could wear such a determined expression were often strong.

Satisfied, Gyou turned his gaze to the angels. Given their distance weapons, they likely specialized in long-range combat, posing a significant threat to oni, who excelled in close-quarters fighting. While Gyou pondered their strategy, Kenra charged forward.

Kenra sheathed his blade and sprinted low to the ground. The angels, flying above, loosed more arrows, but Kenra deflected them all.

“Oni Dance Stance.”

Thud…!!

Kenra’s right leg sank into the ground as he gathered power. Then, like a spring, he launched himself towards the angels.

“Sturdy Legs!”

“Hogyu!”

Kenra deflected an arrow with his blade and kicked one angel, sending it flying with a dull slam, likely a fatal blow. However, the other angel quickly distanced itself, forcing Kenra to wait for his fall. The angel aimed its bow, preparing to shoot Kenra as he descended.

Kenra couldn’t dodge mid-air. The best he could do was deflect the arrows. As he turned to face the angel, it loosed its arrow.

“!!?”

A strong sense of foreboding struck Kenra. He instinctively covered his ears, bracing for impact.

BANG!!!!

A loud, dry explosion echoed, shaking the air and blowing the arrow away. Even with his ears covered, Kenra felt his consciousness waver.

Gritting his teeth, Kenra regained his composure just in time to adjust his landing. He rolled awkwardly but avoided injury. At the same time, the angel he had kicked plummeted to the ground.

“…Uphh…”

“Oh, you noticed that?”

“Gyou-san… What did you just do…?”

“I just clapped my hands.”

Gyou smiled and clapped his hands lightly, producing a gentle sound unlike the earlier explosion.

“What…?”

“It’s a technique only aah can do. Don’t try to imitate it, or ya will hurt yourself.”

Kenra thought to himself that he couldn’t imitate it even if he tried. He was impressed by the power of the sound but couldn’t grasp the underlying principle.

Both angels lay dead. It seemed unlikely that skilled foes would be so weak, making Kenra thoughtful. Gyou, too, seemed puzzled.

“Hmm, maybe we should regroup with Uchikage-sama.”

“No, we need to stay here and draw the enemy’s attention.”

“Well, we’ll manage somehow.”

Despite their concerns, they had handled the situation well so far. Now, they just needed to stay vigilant and continue their mission.
