Shit turned darker here.

7-38. Side -Reizen- Mischievous Ghost

In their field of vision, something definitely moved.

When they quickly checked, they saw that the path they had just come down was now blocked. Instead, a new path had formed, almost as if guiding them, and they could hear the sound of small footsteps pattering away into the distance.

The spirits that had accompanied Reizen were also confused. Some seemed frightened, and a few clung to Reizen and Karna.

“W-What was that just now…?”

“Something definitely feels off…”

<<<Hahaha…>>>

“Whoa.”

A child’s laughter echoed, and it was coming from right beside them.

Reizen wasn’t particularly scared, but Karna was. She clung to Reizen, hiding behind him along with the spirits. It seemed that Karna wasn’t fond of scary things.

What they saw was a small frill. As it came into view, a girl dressed in a cute outfit, with a face like a doll, gradually appeared before them, floating in mid-air. She seemed to be in high spirits, having successfully played a prank. Even now, she was still giggling mischievously.

If that had been all, it might not have been so bad. But Reizen realized that this wasn’t just one ghost. There were many of them—so many that even someone without spiritual sensitivity could tell they were hiding everywhere, watching them.

“I have a bad feeling about this.”

“I already think this is bad…!”

“It’s not about the ghosts. It’s about the children.”

“…Huh…?”

The first one they encountered was a ghost. Reizen quickly understood the implications. His fists clenched involuntarily.

How many children had been sacrificed here?

<<<Let’s play! Let’s play!>>>

“Where are you now?”

<<<Where? Right here, of course.>>>

“No, I mean your body. Where is your body?”

<<<My body? I don’t really know.>>>

It might have been too complex for the child to understand. To her, being able to fly freely in the air was probably just fun, and she wasn’t questioning her current situation at all.

In other words, she hadn’t realized that she was already dead.

<<<Come on, let’s play!>>>

“Where did you come from?”

<<<Me? From Lord Kanter Street!>>>

“One of the main streets in the Kingdom of Garott…?”

Karna seemed to know more about this. They now realized that the ghostly girl before them had once lived in the Kingdom of Garott. It seemed the rumors about angels gathering children were true.

What had they done by sacrificing these children? Reizen wanted to learn more, but it seemed the child wasn’t very patient. She floated up and disappeared into the wall.

“Ah, wait…”

<<<If you find us again, I’ll tell you more~!>>>

The other ghosts scattered like spiders, disappearing as well.

Would they have to find all of them?

Reizen and Karna exchanged glances and then looked at the newly formed path. There was nowhere else to go. Unsure of what else to do, they decided to move forward, hoping to gather more information along the way.

“Let’s investigate as we go.”

“Okay. What if the angel comes?”

“The spirits will warn us. Right?”

<<No problem!>>

The spirits reassured them that they would continue to keep watch. Reizen and Karna knew they had to find out what happened to those children. This information could be a significant bargaining chip in turning the people of Garott Kingdom to their side.

Though playing with ghost children wasn’t exactly a priority, the ability of this church to transform itself was a real problem. To search efficiently, they would need to figure out a way to convince the children to restore the church to its original state.

“How long until dawn?”

“It’s still the middle of the night, so we’re good.”

“Probably within five hours… Alright!”

Reizen dispelled the ground and ran down the newly created path. Karna followed, with the spirits in tow.

The path created by the ghosts seemed to be made of sterile stone, twisting and turning as if it were alive. It was as if the very dimensions had been distorted. Although it was a long corridor, after a while, they finally saw doors and windows.

Looking out the windows, they saw the same row of houses they had seen before entering. Despite all the running, it seemed their actual movement distance was quite short. As they cautiously observed their surroundings, they saw a small frill slip into a room.

Reizen and Karna exchanged looks and pointed at the door to the room. They nodded to each other, and Reizen reached for the door handle.

“…What is this place?”

Inside the room, they found jars filled with pure white spheres, casually arranged throughout the space.
