I Was Reincarnated As The Older Brother Of A Villainess Destined to Die, So I Want To Change The Future By Raising My Younger Sister With My Own Hands. I Am The Strongest In The World, But My Little Sister Must Be The Cutest In The World - Volume 4 Chapter 13.2
“Marron, this isn’t adventurous spirit; it’s called being impulsive,” Teria corrected me. Well, there’s no denying that it was rather impulsive.
On the other hand, Galna protested, “That’s not fair. It’s not a big deal if it’s a bit impulsive. Look at us now, working as servants.”
“Well, there might be some truth to that,” I conceded.
After all, Galna had endured that grueling training for the past year… yeah.
Oops, that was close. I was about to recall that incident from a year ago. If I dwelled on it while drinking, it would definitely take a turn for the worse.
I quickly shook my head to clear my thoughts.
Teria raised an eyebrow in exasperation. “I’ll give you that. Enduring that was impossible without considerable patience.”
“Well, well, this is rare. It sounds a bit like self-praise,” I remarked.
“I’m just stating facts,” Teria replied.
It seemed like everyone had similar thoughts. It was only natural.
“Now it’s Marron’s turn,” she added.
As we nodded to each other, Galna poured some water.
“Ah, I guess I have to talk too. It’s a bit embarrassing, though… Well, here goes,” I mustered the courage and began.
“You know, I’m actually from Foranada,” I started.
“Really?” Teria was surprised.
“I’ve never heard that before,” Galna chimed in.
Well, I hadn’t mentioned it before. I think only the people in human resources knew about that.
“But, it’s a small village in the outskirts. When I was a child, we were really poor, and just surviving each day was a struggle,” I continued.
I could still vividly recall my childhood memories.
It was really tough. The land had become barren even before I was born, so our fields never produced any crops, and we were always hungry. There weren’t enough wild animals in the area to hunt, and the local official who governed our village at the time was corrupt and merciless when it came to collecting taxes. So, people were dying every day as a matter of course. I think all the children except me had died.
As a child, I had realized that I might die soon too, but then a glimmer of hope appeared.
That hope was Zeck-sama. He got rid of the corrupt official, provided aid to the impoverished villages, and initiated land reforms to revive our village’s land.
I owe everything to Zeck-sama for my life and for growing up to be a fine person. So, I wanted to repay him in any way I could, using all my abilities. Fortunately, I had talents that seemed useful.
“So, that’s why I got a job here—to repay Zeck-sama. I never expected to be assigned to a position so close to him,” I explained.
Perhaps the gods were listening to my feelings. Thank you, gods~
“Huh?”
After I had finished speaking, I noticed that neither Galna nor Teria had reacted.
I tilted my head and looked at them both, and to my surprise, they were both crying. Galna was even sobbing loudly.
“What’s wrong? What happened!?” I rushed over to them in a panic.
They sniffled and replied, “It’s just that your story was so touching.”
“I can’t believe you went through all that… I’m embarrassed by my own situation,” Teria added.
It seemed like hearing about my past had stirred up a lot of emotions in them.
Oh, how embarrassing. Maybe I talked too much. Did the alcohol make me more talkative?
Suddenly, Galna raised his mug high.
“Alright, I’m treating you today, Marron. Drink as much as you want!”
“I’ll pitch in too,” Teria said.
“Nooo, you don’t have to do that,” I protested.
It was hard to stop them as they went off the rails.
But, all in all, it was a fun time.
I received an extraordinary amount of time off and salary that I could never have dreamed of. I was able to work by my benefactor’s side, surrounded by friendly colleagues and a kind boss. I felt truly blessed. It was all thanks to Zeck-sama.
The only thing I worry about is whether I can truly repay my debt to him.
