Nina: Future Dream
“Nina, do you have a dream for the future?”
“Dream?”
“Yes, a future dream.”
On a certain afternoon, on the verge of entering the academy, I, Nina, was having a tea party with Caron. Once in a while, if asked to casually deepen our friendship and relax, I had no choice but to agree.
The question earlier was thrown into such a peaceful atmosphere.
“Well…”
Caron probably meant it as a casual question. However, for me, it was a difficult question to answer. After all, I was in the midst of being targeted for my life, trapped by a fate that could lead to death. I didn’t have the time to fantasise about the future. Right now, all I could think about was training to overcome my fate.
Seeing my reaction, Caron tilted her head in curiosity.
“Was it such a difficult question?”
“I’m just too busy dealing with the problems in front of me to think about the future.”
I couldn’t say directly, “Because I might die,” so I gave a milder response.
Even so, Caron seemed to sense the situation to some extent and nodded solemnly.
“I see. Well then, since we have this time, how about we think about it?”
“Huh?”
I was taken aback by the unexpected proposal.
Certainly, if we used this tea party time, I could come up with a rough outline for the future, but wasn’t it too sudden?
Caron chuckled playfully.
“You seem surprised, Nina.”
“Well, it’s just so sudden.”
“Sometimes, suddenness can lead to the best future plans.”
“Isn’t that too hasty?”
“Being a bit hasty might be just right. Putting too much pressure on yourself can lead to more mistakes.”
“Hmm…”
There might be some truth to that…
Well, since Caron was the one hosting this tea party and she wanted to think about my dream together, I had no reason to refuse. I had no objections myself.
“Alright, go ahead and do as you please.”
“Yes, please feel free to.”
With that, Caron laughed again, genuinely enjoying herself, wearing a smile that seemed to come from her heart.
Was thinking about my dream really that interesting?
Despite feeling somewhat uneasy, we began our discussion.
“First, let’s decide on the scope of the future we want to envision.”
“What do you mean by scope?”
“Whether it’s a dream that can be achieved immediately or one that will take time. It’s about determining the level of difficulty. If we don’t decide on that first, we can’t work out the details.”
“I see.”
When running a marathon, you need to set a goal, or you won’t be able to pace yourself. It seemed somewhat similar.
An immediate dream wasn’t an option. It could overlap with the timing of escaping my fate of death. So, deciding what to do “after resolving the current problems” would be more meaningful.
“I prefer a dream that will take time.”
“You’re aiming for something big; that’s very admirable. Next, shall we decide on the direction?”
“For example?”
“Well, let’s see… If you were the next head of the family, you might dream of developing the territory. If you were a knight, you might aim to become the captain of the royal guard. And if you were a mage, you might aspire to be the chief court mage.”
“None of those really suit me.”
“I thought as much. We should aim for a goal that aligns more with Nina’s interests.”
“Interests…”
