I Will Never Submit to Miss Grim Reaper - Chapter 447
Chapter 447: Try Not to Give Up
“I want this! Can I take this one too?”
“Does anyone else like pineapple? This one is too big, I can’t move it. Let’s move it together.”
“I don’t like pineapple, but I like watermelon. This watermelon is also heavy. How about I help you move the pineapple back, and you come help me with the watermelon?”
“……”
From the lively scene at the entrance of Starlight Elementary School, it’s clear that the kids really enjoy this activity.
Even though children in big cities now have good nutrition and eat well, many still face issues with inadequate nutrition due to their family conditions.
In big cities, kids typically have several large meat buns, an egg, and a bottle of milk for breakfast. Lunch includes vegetables, meat, fruit, and snacks. Dinner is also very rich, with four dishes and soup, and sometimes a bottle of milk or yogurt at night.
Given such food conditions, it’s natural for children to grow taller.
At least in my time, three meals a day often didn’t fill us up. For breakfast, we had at most two steamed buns, sometimes just one, and forget about eggs or milk. Lunch was usually a bowl of noodles or some kind of “substitute food,” like tofu pudding—back then, our lunch was really just a bowl of tofu pudding.
Tofu and tofu pudding are very filling, especially with added syrup, so it was not easy to feel hungry. Dinner was a standard cafeteria meal with very little meat, mostly “minced meat with eggplant” or “minced meat with corn,” and one small vegetable dish. Rice was unlimited.
Such a diet might keep one from starving, but it definitely lacks proper nutrition and isn’t as balanced as the diet modern children enjoy, with frequent eggs and milk.
The children in Starlight Elementary have conditions similar to those I had at the welfare home back in the day.
Their families can’t provide good conditions, and the school cafeteria doesn’t have much money, so the food is not very tasty. As a result, the kids’ eyes light up when they see these fruits.
However, even though the kids are excited, it doesn’t help much. At Principal He Yuanyi’s signal, I deliberately picked out the larger fruits—mangoes larger than an adult’s hand, watermelons starting at fifteen pounds, and durians and pineapples weighing twenty to thirty pounds.
In Starlight Elementary, there are almost no overweight children. Even sixth graders here average only forty to fifty pounds, making it very difficult for them to carry something heavier than half their own body weight.
Thus, this activity primarily tests their physical ability and teamwork skills. Kids are greedy, knowing they need to move the fruit to the dorm to eat it often means they try to carry as many mangoes as possible at once. The more they carry, the heavier it gets, and running with the weight makes them tired, achieving the intended exercise effect.
“By the way, is Sister Nuo’er participating in this activity?”
Perhaps due to spending time with the “rich young lady” Li Denghua, Zhou Xiaofei seemed more reserved compared to the other kids. She tried to lift a watermelon much larger than herself and, after struggling for a few minutes, looked at me with a pitiful expression.
“Can we get outside help?”
Xiao Mo cleverly turned the camera to me.
“Ah…” I was momentarily at a loss for words.
“I… I, this… I won’t participate. I just came after eating my fill, and besides, I’m the host for this event.”
?Nuo’er is feeling guilty.?
Immediately, the chat in my earpiece started buzzing with comments:
?I know Nuo’er can’t carry it, don’t push yourself.?
?Of course she can’t. New fans might be questioning if Nuo’er can carry it, but old fans already know her strength.?
?She’d be sweating buckets after lifting the cafe’s Dingman for a few minutes, let alone such a big watermelon.?
?I saw Nuo’er struggling to cut vegetables in the kitchen, needing a small stool to stand on. She couldn’t cut many vegetables and needed the chef’s help.?
?By the way, is it still possible for me to repeat elementary school at Starlight Elementary? I think my high school entrance exam results aren’t very good, and I want to go back to elementary school. Can you repeat high school for college entrance exams too??
?The person asking about repeating elementary school, how old are you??
?28 years old.?
?I’m calling the police.?
“……”
“Xiaofei, you need to exercise regularly. For this watermelon, I can…”
Seeing that I was somewhat embarrassed, Li Denghua crouched down and pushed Zhou Xiaofei aside.
“Move aside, I’ll help you.”
The watermelon didn’t budge.
“Eh?”
Li Denghua was taken aback. She closed her eyes and exerted a strong effort—
The watermelon still didn’t move.
“Heh, so let’s move it together.”
Li Denghua’s appearance amused Zhou Xiaofei.
“This activity is supposed to teach us to cooperate and make friends, right? Maybe we should call the boys over there?”
“No, we can’t call the boys.”
Mentioning this, Li Denghua’s previously slightly awkward expression turned serious.
“We girls need to handle our own tasks, understand? Xiaofei, if boys can do it, we should be able to do it too. If we run into difficulties and rely on boys to help, that’s not true independence.”
“Oh…”
Zhou Xiaofei looked a bit confused but nodded seriously, “Then we’ll do it together.”
“Okay, you take that side, and I’ll take this side.”
Under my watchful eye, the two elementary school girls worked together to lift the huge watermelon and, swaying back and forth, began to move towards the dormitory.
“Are you two okay?”
Seeing that they were having difficulty walking, I suggested, “Maybe take a smaller one to avoid dropping it.”
“We’re fine!”
Li Denghua gritted her teeth. “We handle our own tasks…”
“Denghua has changed a lot recently.”
Principal He Yuanyi came over to me.
“During the time she was hospitalized, she wasn’t well-regarded at school. Maybe it’s because she frequently won awards and many teachers praised her. Her family also didn’t discipline her much, so she often bossed around her classmates. Gradually, few kids wanted to play with her. Many students complained to the homeroom teacher, saying Denghua was too arrogant and spoke harshly.”
“I know.”
I nodded, “How is she now? Is she getting along well with her classmates?”
“The classmates from her previous grade have already graduated. Denghua is now with a new class, but it seems she has a good relationship with the new students, especially with Zhou Xiaofei. They’re almost inseparable.”
Principal He picked up a “pomelo” from a basket on the ground and peeled it.
“But I’m a bit concerned. Over the past two months, their relationship seems to be beyond what’s typical for girls.”
I turned my head, “What do you mean?”
“It might be our teachers’ misperception, but it feels like they’re almost in a romantic relationship.”
Principal He chuckled, “Just kidding. You’re still doing the program, right? I won’t interrupt. I’ll go over there and help with the younger kids. It’s too much to ask them to move thirty-pound watermelons.”
