- Chapter 73 - This Grim Reaper is Clearly Super Powerful but Can't Cook
New and latest smartphones on the market typically fall within a price range of 4,000 to 8,000 yuan. Ordinary people or college students looking to buy a phone usually don’t rush to purchase models that have just been released. They wait for a while until the prices drop to around 2,000 or 3,000 yuan and then buy a phone that they can use for three to five years.
If it’s a more expensive brand with high-end specifications, like one with 1TB of storage, the price can go well beyond 10,000 yuan.
As a novelist, over the years, I’ve joined a bunch of peculiar groups. Standard groups like editors, authors, and readers are manageable, but some game and anime groups often have over 2,000 members, with thousands of messages, images, and short videos sent each day. Over time, the chat history and the images and short videos I’ve received accumulate to several tens of gigabytes. If I don’t clean it up for half a year or so, I check the phone’s storage, and QQ is taking up 80+ gigabytes, while WeChat uses 30+ gigabytes.
In such cases, I simply delete these apps and reinstall them, immediately freeing up a significant amount of space.
I’ve had the idea of “buying a new phone” for a long time. Putting aside other factors, I need a phone with ample storage space and the ability to smoothly run the mainstream games on the market. This way, I can keep up with the storylines and understand what everyone in my readers’ group talks about every day, without struggling at the grocery store to pay for groceries or having to deal with poor signal quality.
However, with the recent economic downturn, my salary barely covers my basic living expenses after paying rent every month. I had saved up for a new phone for almost half a year, and just when it seemed I could finally afford it, my company declared bankruptcy, and the boss disappeared.
“All right, it’s settled then.”
With my affirmative response, the Miss Grim Reaper didn’t remove her tattered “Grim Reaper outfit” and used it to cover her body
“Do you have any food here?”
“Now you want to eat? I waited for you the whole night last night!”
I placed my hands on my hips. “You stood me up, made me eat alone without knowing whether I should eat or not, and I had no idea where to find you!”
“I…”
Perhaps feeling that what she did wasn’t quite right, the Miss Grim Reaper sounded a bit dejected and said in a lower voice, “I had no choice. Last night was the best opportunity to kill the Demon King.”
“Yes, yes, you superpowered folks are always right. I’m just a regular person.”
With a touch of dissatisfaction, I walked to the refrigerator and opened the cabinet on the top. “Let’s get one thing straight, I don’t have a habit of keeping fresh ingredients. These are leftovers from last night, not fresh anymore.”
I heard the voice of the Miss Grim Reaper from behind, almost like a little girl, “It’s okay.”
“I’ll heat it up for you.”
I took out the pickled fish bone soup from the fridge, stood on a small stool, and turned on the stove. I poured the bone soup into a pot. While waiting for it to heat up, I boiled some water and also took the strawberries I couldn’t bear to eat last night, washed them by the sink, and placed them on the small table in front of the sofa.
“You can have some fruit first. I’ll heat up the soup and dishes.”
I put on an apron and took a small ladle. “And are you really sure you don’t need to go to the hospital? Can such a serious injury heal on its own? Doesn’t it hurt?”
“Are you worry about me?”
The girl behind me seemed to be munching on strawberries and spoke with a bit of a muffled voice. “I can take care of myself…”
“Can someone who can’t even eat properly take care of themselves?”
I didn’t look back. “Also, can you be honest with me? Was I really going to die suddenly before? What specific ailment did I have?”
As far as I remember, my health has always been decent since childhood. My eating habits were relatively regular during my school years, both in my school days and after graduating from college. I occasionally went for runs or exercised at home, especially around the time when I became a girl and was near my monthly cycle. I didn’t smoke or drink. Except for the irregular sleep schedule and somewhat poor sleep quality in recent years, I couldn’t think of any reason for myself to “suddenly drop dead.”
Could it be that I just had really bad luck?
“Uh…”
When I asked this question, the girl behind me seemed to choke on the strawberry in her hand and remained silent for a while.
Seeing that something was amiss, I turned my head. “Don’t tell me the old me was… did you do it on purpose?”
*cough* *cough*
“How could that be!”
Miss Grim Reaper immediately denied, her tone somewhat uneasy. “You clearly didn’t take care of your health, stayed up late every day, and… suddenly died. I am the ‘death’ will of this world, and at that time, taking you away was entirely reasonable and legal.”
So, if I understand correctly… someone who doesn’t smoke, doesn’t drink, doesn’t have many bad habits, eats regularly, and only has an irregular sleep schedule with half a year of staying up late is at risk of sudden death? In that case, there are probably many people in this world living on the edge of danger every day, right?
Anyway, once a person is dead and their body is handed over to the hospital, there’s no way to prove otherwise, right?
“Let’s just believe you for now.”
With a sense of frustration, I turned back and filled a bowl with the freshly heated winter melon and bone soup. I also took a small bowl, a pair of chopsticks, and a spoon from the nearby cabinet and returned to the miss grim reaper.
“That day, did you take my body to the hospital?”
Placing the soup bowl in the center of the table, I used the spoon to scoop some soup and winter melon and bone meat into the small bowl. Then, I placed the spoon next to the small bowl and unfolded a small trash can made of newspaper under the table.
“Did you donate my heart?”
“And the corneas and kidneys, donated to three little girls.”
Miss Grim Reaper eagerly picked up the soup bowl. “Shenzhen City First People’s Hospital. That’s the only one I knew at the time.”
Shenzhen City First People’s Hospital? It doesn’t seem too far from here.
“What type of noodles do you like?”
Feeling like I wouldn’t get much of a response from her, I returned to the bedroom and opened the snack box. “I only have regular noodles and instant noodles here.”
“Both are fine.”
The Miss Grim Reaper seemed quite puzzled by the difference between instant noodles and regular noodles.
“In that case, I’ll cook regular noodles.”
I took the discounted noodles I had bought from the supermarket and returned to the kitchen. I added some water to the pot where I had intentionally left some soup base from the bone broth. After turning on the heat, I estimated the amount of noodles the girl might eat and took the appropriate portion from the packaging.
Once the soup boiled vigorously, I added the noodles and a pinch of salt to adjust the flavor. When it seemed about done, I served the noodles to the Grim Reaper.
Finally, I heated up the leftover pickled fish from last night and took out some ice-cold fruit vinegar from the fridge, placing it on the table. I untied my apron. “That’s all there is.”
“It looks so delicious…”
It seemed like she hadn’t eaten in a long time, and the Miss Grim Reaper’s attention was solely on the food in front of her. “Is this fish spicy?”
“It’s a little spicy, but it’s more sour.”
I asked curiously, “Can you not handle spicy food?”
“No, it’s just that in otherworldly places, spicy ingredients are usually not used in cooking, so it feels a bit novel.”
Miss Grim Reaper attempted to pick up a piece of fish. “Mmm… except for the texture of the fish being a bit soft, the flavor is really good… Did you make these dishes?”
“If you had come last night, it wouldn’t have been soft. Now, these two dishes have been frozen in the fridge and reheated.”
Seeing her enjoy the meal, for some reason, I quietly breathed a sigh of relief. “You go ahead and eat. I’ll take a shower so I don’t catch a cold later.”
“Mmm…”
She only responded vaguely.
I grabbed the cute rabbit nightgown that I had taken off in the morning from the bedroom’s hanger and entered the bathroom.
Just like a few nights ago, in the bathroom filled with swirling hot steam, I enjoyed the comfort of hot water masking the sensation of a girl’s body. I carefully washed my hair and body with the newly bought shower gel and shampoo. Unbeknownst to me, half an hour had passed.
Speaking of which, going out in such a cute outfit won’t be the subject of ridicule by that heartless Miss Grim Reaper, right?
After carefully drying the dewdrops from my body and hair, I hesitated for a while in the bathroom, but in the end, I decided to go all out.
I’m already indebted to her for this girly outfit, and it’s the only piece of clothing in the house suitable for a girl. I found it, and if she dares to laugh, I’ll bite her!
However, when I shyly pushed open the bathroom door, wearing wet slippers, and returned to the living room, all I saw was an empty sofa. The Miss Grim Reaper who had been eating here earlier had disappeared without a trace.
The bedsheets were carelessly tossed on the edge of the sofa, and there was nothing left of the winter melon bone soup and noodles on the table. The fish had been devoured, leaving only a skeleton, and there was just over half of the pickled cabbage remaining. The makeshift garbage bin made of discarded newspapers was filled with bones and fishbones.
Can’t she at least say goodbye?!
Realizing that the Miss Grim Reaper must have used her ability to travel through space to go to who knows where, I stood in front of the table, feeling both helpless and angry.
“I have to clean up this mess myself. Damn, I just finished taking a shower…”
