I woke up to find I have a child - Chapter 39
There are many things in life that are less complicated than one imagined. For example, if one person likes another person, then they date the other party. If it doesn’t work out, then they break up, drink some hot water, and restart the whole process again.
It might sound simple or crude and can come across a little sloppy or careless, but the most effective methods are often the most simple ones.
Although love is considered a simple thing, the human heart is much more complex.
Han Feixu returned to her room and sat on her bed, pondering what she had just learned. She couldn’t help but feel that something was wrong, but she couldn’t tell exactly what was wrong.
She suddenly jumped off the bed and hurriedly put on her slippers. She ran into her closet and rummaged around.
Although it can be considered a closet, the space inside is big enough to call it a huge cloakroom instead. There were piles of clothes and accessories placed in different categories, each one unique and different. She opened every drawer, jewelry box, and cabinet she could find. The four levels of a cabinet turned into a junkyard from her searching, and yet she still couldn’t find what she was looking for.
Han Feixu had just moved back to China, so there are not many of her things inside this house. But apparently almost all she owned was inside this closet. Han Feixu was puzzled by this fact as she sat down on the carpet. She had lived for over 20 years and yet she only has these few piles of clothes and accessories to her name? Did she not leave any other traces of her life?
Han Feixu doesn’t have a habit of writing in a diary, but she does have a habit of collecting things. When she was younger, she liked to collect all kinds of rhinestones as well as little outfits for her Barbie dolls. As she grew older, she began to collect stamps. Her parents received many letters, especially her mother whose readers mailed fan letters by hand. She collected plenty of stamps from those envelopes.
A few years later, she started collecting handwritten sheet music and fun or interesting music instruments. In fact, she had four different double reed wind instruments (such as oboe or bassoon) alone.
In addition to these collections, she also kept a number of memorabilia, things that would remind her of certain memories of her life. From movie tickets, letters and greeting cards sent to her on her birthday, to certificates of merit from her childhood, and so on.
People can change, but it is impossible for them to change so much. Han Feixu feels that even after ten years, this habit of her things would not change. So there must be a box full of memories of her marriage, such as marriage certificates and wedding rings.
She has found herself ten years into the future, yet she can not find any proof she was even married. She wouldn’t even believe she was married if it weren’t for her living wife and daughter = =
After some more rummaging, she found that there really wasn’t anything in here. So she returned to the bedroom. She has been living in this room for more than two months, but except for her laptop, phone, and documents, everything else in here came with the house. Not a single gadget was hers.
There was one advantage to this. That is, if she decides to leave, she can simply pack a suitcase. No, she doesn’t even need to pack up, she can simply grab her phone and go.
Her older self must have been really determined to sever all relations…..Even a blind man could see that she doesn’t think of this place as her home, but merely as a temporary place to stay and a place she will immediately leave after she finishes whatever task she set out to do.
But Han Feixu didn’t give up her search. After hearing the explanation Ye Mingxin gave her, she felt even more doubtful. She doesn’t believe that Ye Mingxin would lie about something like this, as there is still a possibility that she will regain her memories in the future. After all, if Ye Mingxin lies now, once she regains her memories, wouldn’t it just worsen her impression of Ye Mingxin?
But on the other hand, she didn’t think she was that kind of person who fell out of love so easily.
Because the person Ye Mingxin described was someone who was hit hard by her parents’ death and then casually married someone to heal her scars. Then when the scars of her heart were almost healed, she kicked out the person who helped heal them in the first place.
“…..”
Is she really that bad of a person?!!
Han Feixu laid her head on her desk, her hands in her hair as she tugged it in frustration. Her hair successfully transformed into a chicken coop. She laid on that desk for a while before she suddenly straightened up again.
She plodded over to the other side of the room and picked up the wallet she had only used once.
Nowadays, most people don’t use cash at all anymore. They made most of their payments by scanning a QR code. Even Han Feixu doesn’t take much cash with her when she goes out. As long as she had her phone, everything was fine.
The texture of the wallet is very soft. The wallet is rather small and short, but also very fat. Han Feixu has only used it once and so except for a few RMB and US dollars, she didn’t expect there was much else. She unzipped the compartments that held credit cards and cash. opened the money and cards. She took everything out, and found that there was nothing special, so she unzipped another small compartment.
When she unzipped that compartment, something rushed out and a small piece of metal landed with a clang onto the ground.
She picked up the ring. Han Feixu felt proud of herself, “Aha! I knew this habit of mine hadn’t changed!”
For objects that held an important place in her heart, she either hid them in her closet or placed them in a purse of sorts that she can carry everywhere with her.
There is nothing obviously special about the ring. It was a simple ring made of simple materials, the diamond engraved in it shining only under the lamp light. Han Feixu held it up against the light and saw a few words engraved on the inside of the ring.
After looking intently at it for a long while, Han Feixu realized she didn’t recognize a single word.
…..
Is it Arabic? Or Slovenian?
Aren’t they both Chinese? What is with this lettering that no one can understand!
At least she has found something left behind from her marriage. She laid down on her bed in content and tried on the ring. The process was quite smooth and the ring slipped on her finger easily. She raised her hand towards the chandelier on the ceiling and couldn’t help but sigh. Although the style is a bit ordinary and looks a bit old, a diamond is still a diamond. Even if it was set on the tab of a soda can, it can instantly steal a girl’s heart.
Just like her, who doesn’t want to take the ring off now = =
Just kidding, what right does she have to wear this ring now? After satisfying her curiosity, she lowered her hand and tried to take off the ring. Yes, tried, because the ring got stuck less than two centimeters down, right around her middle knuckle.
Her eyes widened and she quickly sat up. She continued pulling but it wouldn’t come off even after squeezing her fingers. She started getting agitated and worked at it for 10 minutes before she finally confirmed a harsh fact.
Not only does she not want to leave this diamond behind, but this diamond doesn’t want to leave her either.
She was flustered to the point that she almost hit the wall. She still couldn’t pull off the ring and her ring finger’s temperature started to drop, indicating that she had cut off her blood circulation. With no other choice, she slid the ring back down and opened the door. She was going to find Auntie Li, the housekeeper, and ask her for help.
As the saying goes, having an elderly person at home is like having a treasure. Although Auntie Li may not be that old yet, she had more life experience than the young women of this house.
The servants’ quarters are on the first floor next to the kitchen. Han Feixu tightly covered her left hand with her right, and tiptoed downstairs like a thief, afraid of capturing Ye Mingxin’s attention.
The main lights on the first floor were all turned off with only a few small lights left on. In this quiet environment, anyone who entered would try to maintain the quiet environment. Han Feixu was no exception as she stepped lightly and made her way towards Auntie Li’s room.
However, when she passed the kitchen, a cold voice sounded.
“What happened to your hand?”
Han Fexiu: “….”
She made an anxious and flustered expression as she nervously curled her hands into her chest instead of placing them naturally in front of her. Even at a glance, anyone could tell that something was wrong.
Ye Mingxin sat at the kitchen counter, with a bottle of wine that Han Feixu didn’t know the name of and a half-empty wine glass sitting in front of her.
Han Feixu was too focused on walking quietly just now, and since Ye Mingxin didn’t move at all, she was regarded as part of the dimly lit background = =
Han Feixu stopped in place. She couldn’t leave or stay, but she raised her head quietly and accidentally met Ye Mingxin’s eyes. The two stared at each other until Han Feixu averted her eyes and began frantically making up excuses.
“….I felt a little thirty and came out to grab a glass of water.”
If it was a simple hand injury, Han Feixu wouldn’t have hidden it from her. Ye Mingxin raised her eyebrows slightly, but nodded and said, “Then you should go grab a bottle.”
How? As soon as she reaches out to grab a bottle of water, wouldn’t the ring be exposed?
Han Feixu summoned up her courage as she turned around, walked to the fridge, and then placed her left hand to the side that Ye Mingxin couldn’t see, and then opened the fridge with her right hand. She took out a bottle of water and turned around to leave.
Ye Mingxin tilted her head, staring at her left hand that had been swinging stiffly by her side, “I’m feeling a little thirsty, can you help grab a bottle for me too?”
Han Feixu turned her head silently, “Aren’t you drinking that bottle of wine?”
Ye Mingxin chuckled, “How can water and wine be the same? Water is the only one that quenches thirst.”
Seeing that she wasn’t going to let the matter go, Han Feixu pursed her lips. She walked over in a depressed manner, placing the water on the counter before pinching the ring on her left ring finger and saying honestly, “I wanted to try wearing our wedding ring, but when I put it on, I couldn’t take it off.”
She thought Ye Mingxin would show a heartbroken expression again, but instead she frowned, “Wedding ring?”
Han Feixu stretched out her hand and showed her her ring finger that had now gone swollen and numb, “It’s this one.”
Ye Mingxin was silent for a moment, then took her hand and pressed it gently, coaxing her blood circulation, “This is not our wedding ring.”
“…What?”
Originally, Ye Mingxin’s heart was feeling rather heavy from their previous conversation. She never wanted to tell Han Feixu the reason for their divorce, nor did she ever want to say it out loud herself. After saying those words, it felt like her heart was falling out and it just kept falling into a bottomless pit. The feeling of the sudden uncertain weightlessness made her feel awkward, frightened, and even made her want to cry.
Everything had been fine before. They had met each other in a romantic manner, got to know each other, and stayed together romantically as well. They were each other’s first love, and had a love story straight out of a fairy tale. Just how did they end up at this point?
With these thoughts, the sad feelings overwhelmed her heart and she felt that she would suffocate if she stayed in her room. So she went downstairs and opened a bottle of wine, trying to use alcohol as a way to escape her sadness.
However, no matter how much she drank, that feeling would not leave. Yet, with just a single sentence from Han Feixu, that rapidly free-falling feeling disappeared and her heart returned to its original place. Her heart began to beat again and her mood improved.
Ye Mingxin chuckled, “Our wedding ring is not a white diamond, but a red diamond, and it’s not as big as this one, only weighs 1.5 carats at most.”
Han Feixu blinked, and she looked down at the ring, “Then what ring is this?”
Ye Mingxin pressed her finger and said, “This is an ordinary ring that was bought when we participated in a film festival in France. At the time, you wanted to buy something at the auction in Paris to take home to your mother. You liked this ring very much, but the money you brought with you was all used up. So, I bought this ring and gave it to you.”
Although it all sounded so simple, Han Feixu thought that there must be something more, “This is just a simple gift? Not even a token of love?” Then why did she put it in her wallet, a wallet where she placed only her most important things?
Ye Mingxin thought about it for a while, “No, it shouldn’t be considered a token of love. You stopped wearing it later on. You said you put it away somewhere? Where did you put it?”
“In my wallet,” Han Feixu still couldn’t believe that this was just an ordinary gift, “Does it really mean nothing at all?”
Ye Mingxin stared at her, “Well, if I had to guess its meaningfulness, then it’s the first piece of jewelry I have ever given you.”
Alright, so there was still some meaning behind the object, although it isn’t a very big meaning, it would do. Her fingers no longer felt cold and she retracted her hand as she asked, “Is the reason why I have never worn it before because I couldn’t take it off when I put it on? I’ve already tried so many times, but I just can’t get it off!”
“You could take it off then. When I first bought it, during the early days, I saw you wear it many times. The ring should be just your size,” Ye Mingxin pondered for a moment and then realized, “I got it! You were really thin back then so its size was just right, but now you’re f-…”
The one word that is taboo for all women was almost uttered. Han Feixu looked at her with a blank face, and Ye Mingxin instantly closed her mouth and smiled flatteringly, “You wait here, I’ll go grab some dish soap.”
After she left, Han Feixu’s expression still didn’t change.
You’re the one who’s fat, in fact, your whole family is fat!
“….”
Wait a minute, her whole family….doesn’t that include me? Then the fat one is still me in the end????
