“I think Li Weiwei likes you.” Li Peipei said while eating grilled chicken wings. “The last time you were downstairs chatting with your old classmate, I saw him standing at the entrance of the corridor with his arms crossed and glaring at them for a long time.”

I dipped the brush in soy sauce and brushed the food on the grill then glanced at her, “You’ve never been good at telling what others feel. Don’t expect me to believe you. “

Even though she’s Li Weiwei’s younger sister, I still wouldn’t take her female intuitions seriously as even the girl herself was lacking in experience. 

Which was odd considering they’re both… vampires.

“I also think Li Weiwei likes you.” Meimei said before grabbing a grilled fish. The mermaid was sitting on the edge of the fishpond munching on a fellow fish.

I couldn’t help but stare at that scene. “Meimei, why do mermaids eat fish?”

“Sharks also eat fish, why don’t you ask them?”

She had a point. Since I couldn’t directly refute her, I countered her words with, “You should slow down. Your hips will put sharks to shame if you keep eating like that.”

“You’re changing the subject.” She continued, lazily swinging her tail.  “One time, I saw Li Weiwei waiting for you at the bus stop and gave you his big, black umbrella when it rained. Considering who our landlord is, why else do you think he would treat you, his tenant, so nicely?”

“You’re human, but you’re not that delicate. You’ll be fine with a little rain, and yet he still waited for you and gave you an umbrella?” Li Peipei took a mouthful of meat, chewing as she nodded her head. “If he’s not interested in you, then he must have changed. But we all know that that’s more unlikely than the sky falling.” 

“He gave me an umbrella because I didn’t have one. He left immediately after that. There’s nothing more to it. You guys gossip way too much.”

“I…I also feel that the landlord…likes you.” 

The timid voice of a teenage boy came from Xiao Lang. He was crouching in the corner with a roasted corn in his hands. 

After speaking up, he blushed, and when our eyes met, he got even more shy. He lowered his head, and with a voice so quiet it rivaled a mosquito, he said, “You…you two met because of me.”

Indeed, we did. Li Weiwei and I met because of this little wolf. 

It’s the night of a full moon, but in a city like Chongqing, it’s hard to see the bright moonlight. But this didn’t keep the little werewolf from transforming…and stealing my rations.

He turned into a wolf regardless of the lack of moonlight and stole my food.

 

For twenty-three years, I’ve lived a bland, but peaceful, life. I went to school, fell in love, fell out of love, graduated, and then started to do what I love—drawing comics.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t creative enough according to the editor’s evaluation. “Your drawings are good, but the plot is too boring.” That had been the lowest point of my life.

Broken heart, unemployment, unsupportive parents and friends, dreams becoming nothing more than a daydream. My life’s a mess and my future just seemed so bleak.    

I used whatever money I had left to buy a week’s worth of rations that should last until the rental agreement expired. After that, I’d go back to accept my parents’ arrangements and become someone who “did the right thing.” 

But never have I imagined that in my worst of times, my food would be stolen…

And by a werewolf at that.

Without thinking of whatever consequence awaited me, I ran after them. I only had one thought in mind—I can’t let my food fall into someone else’s hands no matter what!

Even if I only have a week left to chase my dreams, I’ll hold out for as long as I can!

For that, I need to get my food back!

As the city was built on a mountain slope, the terrain wasn’t even. The person who snatched my rations was running on the ground below whereas I was on a level higher. Seeing him taking a turn where I wouldn’t be able to follow, I gritted my teeth and pounced on the thief. 

When I caught them, I realized something was wrong.

This “man”…

His shoulders were too broad for a human, and there’s a lot of hair…

When I slammed down on his back, I clung to his neck and tightened my hold. He stopped and tried to pull my arms, which hurt a lot, but I didn’t budge.   

He smelled like a wild beast. He turned his head and stared at me. His eyes were green, dark, and terrifying. And those eye-catching fangs looked sharp and deadly.

Yao…yaoguai?^[1]

 

When he’s about to open his mouth, I slapped his face. His head jerked then he snapped back at me. 

“Ah! Help!” I scrambled to get off his back and climbed the slope. I picked up a stone along the way and threw it behind me while screaming.  “Help! A yaoguai! There’s a yaoguai! Heeelp!”

The yaoguai made an aggrieved noise but I didn’t hear him chase after me.

I didn’t look back though. All I could think of was to get away, so I ran and ran for about ten meters until I was grabbed by the back of my shirt and picked up like a chicken. I screamed.  

The one in front of me looked like a human—a blonde, frowning human—with gold-rimmed glasses in a suit and leather shoes. With his hand holding me up, he looked at me with annoyance. “Hey, you scared my pet.” 

I stared at the man blankly, and then turned to look at the yaoguai by his side.

Pet?

That two-meter creature with wide shoulders, narrow waist, long hair and erect ears…was a pet? His pet? 

I couldn’t understand the situation, and what made it even more incomprehensible was that when the yaoguai saw this man, the look in its eyes changed.

It grabbed the chocolate from my plastic bag, and without even tearing the wrapping paper, sent my chocolate straight into its mouth.

“No.” The man stiffened. He took his other hand from his pocket, and, with a speed of lightning, a golden chain shot out of his fingertips and wrapped around the yaoguai’s mouth. Its head jerked back, keeping the chocolate away from its mouth.  

“Uh-uh!” The yaoguai wanted to speak but the chains around him kept him from speaking.

The man pulled on the chain which sent the yaoguai over to his feet with a thud. “How many times have I told you that werewolves can’t eat chocolates or else they die?”

I watched this bizarre play in front of me, and for a moment, it’s like my head went blank.

Putting everything aside, I had one question in mind. “Aren’t dogs the ones who could die if they eat chocolate? Is it the same with wolves? Even werewolves?” 

The blonde man narrowed his eyes at me, “For a human, you have a lot of guts.” 

After saying these words, the two-meter-tall werewolf started struggling to get up. Like a child throwing a tantrum, it pushed the blonde man with a force so strong that we were sent flying to the stairs. 

As the man was still holding on to me, I closed my eyes tightly preparing myself for the impact. The stairs’ edges would surely crack my head!   

However, the expected pain didn’t come.

Before I hit the ground, someone’s hand was already firmly holding the back of my head.

And when I fell, I fell on top of someone and bumped into…lips. 

I opened my eyes only to meet the blonde man’s eyes. 

I felt a sting from the broken skin on my lips, my blood staining his pale lips red. The color made his eyes look brighter and sharper. 

I didn’t quite understand the look in his eyes. I raised my head and noticed that we were in a very ambiguous position. Me being flat on top of him.

His one hand on the back of my head and the other…on my chest. 

“Hey!”

I jumped to my feet and staggered as I took two steps back. With my hands on my chest and my heart pounding underneath, I looked at him in horror, then at the yaoguai next to me, and back at him again.

Only then did he sit up from the steps, stick the tip of his tongue out, and slowly, very slowly, licked the blood off his lips. He went still, and for a while, he just sat there with his head low. Then he took a deep breath and looked up, his gaze swept past me. “We need to talk. You keep causing trouble every time you go out.”

The werewolf trembled. “I…I can’t help it! After I became like this, I really couldn’t control myself! I wanted to eat chocolate!”   

Me: “…”

I lacked money but I still gave in to my cravings and bought a few more pieces of chocolates. I completely understood you! 

Maybe this wasn’t a werewolf after all…

“Go back to confinement.”

The blonde man stood up, and with a flick of his hands, one end of the chain that fell to the ground slid to his palm, while the other end slipped from the werewolf’s mouth to its neck during the ruckus. Instead of untying it, the blonde man just headed down the stairs.  

After two steps, he raised his brow at the werewolf who was now standing close to me.

The werewolf looked at him, confused. “Huh?” 

“Bring that person.”

“Her?”

“Excuse me?” I was stunned.

“She saw you. We can’t leave her here.”

I turned to the werewolf only to see a long-haired creature awkwardly scratching its head. “I’m sorry.” 

What followed was pain from the back and my world falling into darkness.

When I woke up, I found out I became a resident of this old, eight-story, apartment building, along with some information about the blonde man. His name is Li Weiwei, a vampire—one that’s powerful and can walk out in daylight—and he’s the owner of this building. A building that’s exclusive to legendary creatures…  

Until there’s me.

 

When Xiao Lang was in human form, his appearance was that of a shy, skinny teenager. “That day, the day you met us, the landlord locked me up. 

“I have a big mirror in my room, and after putting me in the cage, he stood in front of it for a long time.” Xiao Lang lowered his head and whispered, “While touching his mouth…”

I suddenly remembered our skin contact. It wasn’t even a kiss. To a vampire like Li Weiwei…it wouldn’t be such a big deal, right? 

I was still mulling over this when I heard the rooftop door getting slammed open.

Li Weiwei, whose face had always been cold since the day I met him, was standing on the other side of the rooftop. “How many times have I told you…” Based on his tone and his narrowed eyes, no doubt he’s pissed-off. “No barbecue on the roof.”
