My Good Life - Chapter 5.2
“I’ll never eat barbecue again…” I was a little choked up. People in the movie become zombies once they’re bitten. I never thought my life would end like this. There’s still so much I haven’t done. “My manuscript isn’t done yet…”
“Heh.”
In the silent night, there’s a faint sound of a man’s soft chuckle.
The sound was so pleasant that I thought it’s just an illusion. I glanced at the child, but his eyes were closed. Suddenly, a light flashed, and the weight was lifted off of me.
I turned my head to look back and saw a man wearing a large black robe standing at my feet.
He was covered from head to feet, not even a strand of hair was exposed.
Hanging limp in his hand like a rag doll was the zombie that bit me. She didn’t show the slightest hint of aggressiveness she had before to resist.
“Get lost.”
He threw the zombie with a flick, and she rolled down the stairs. When she got back on her feet, she stared at the man as if measuring him, then leaped up the stairs. I thought she’s going after me, but she didn’t.
She jumped over to the child, wrapped her arms around him tightly, and fled the place.
The robed man only watched quietly from beginning to end and did not interfere with the zombie’s departure.
I stared at him blankly.
Right then, my body began to tremble. Perhaps it’s because of the fear, or maybe the biting cold from my wet clothes, or…
It was because of the inexplicable wariness this man brought me as he walked towards me step by step.
But when he stopped beside me, I could only imagine how embarrassing I must have looked like right now.
Muddy coral fleece pajamas, tears and snot mixed with blood on my face, messy hair, and clutching my injured hand and my eyes were wide in horror.
Definitely not an appealing sight.
He crouched in front of me, and even up close, I still couldn’t see his face. It’s like there’s a black mist inside the robe engulfing his features in darkness.
He reached out with a hand that was also covered with leather gloves. He’s someone unfamiliar, but I could feel his hand stroking my head carefully as if I’m a piece of porcelain that has just been put back together.
So nice and gentle…
His hand ran down my hair, caressed my face, and wiped the blood under my nose with his thumb.
He didn’t say a word, but I couldn’t help breaking the silence.
“Brother, who are you?”
He simply laughed lowly.
No words could describe how good his voice was. It was so hypnotic that I was dazed. Only when he let me go and stepped back did I come back to my senses. Along with the wind, his robe fluttered like those of the heroes in comics, novels, and TV series.
I may be a comic book author, although lacking in imagination, but I still get obsessed over those two-dimensional characters. It was stunning. Suddenly, I heard my own heart beating vigorously.
That sudden burst caught me off guard.
I always thought that no one could get through the indestructible “dimensional wall” in my heart, not even the non-human beings I often spend time with, but I guess miracles do happen…
And I can’t believe it just happened to me.
“So, did he say who he is?” Li Peipei asked as she nibbled on an apple. Meimei and Xiao Lang nodded in agreement. “Who is he? What is he? Did he also live in this building?”
I was about to answer when the door to the rooftop was kicked open.
“You shouldn’t believe in love.” Li Weiwei stood at the door crossing his arms, “Go make money, are you being lazy again?”
“We also have to rest, and we haven’t delayed our work lately.” Li Peipei just got her salary recently which gave her the confidence in talking back to her brother. “Don’t make trouble. Let’s finish listening to Xiaoxin.”
I coughed as I faced the three curious babies’ attention. “He said something like that.”
“What?”
“If I were you, I wouldn’t believe in love.”
When the robed man said it, the words felt heart-wrenching, but after hearing it again and again from Li Weiwei, I just felt numb. I rubbed my arms and gave Li Weiwei a sidelong glance. “What do you want?”
A paper with a list written on it was flung in front of me and Li Weiwei’s expression was no better than mine. “Remember to send yesterday’s medical bills to the old witch on the sixth floor.”
Yesterday it was because of Li Weiwei’s arrival that my encounter with the black-robed man was cut short.
The moment he appeared, the figure of the black-robed man disappeared like smoke in the midst of the mountain city. I sat blankly, reminiscing and wondering if the man also fell in love with me at first sight, until Li Weiwei’s face appeared in my sight.
“Su Xiaoxin.” He called my name with urgency.
That was the first time I had seen Li Weiwei look at me like this, the corners of his lips were tight, and his body just seemed so tense. “Say something.”
“Say… what?”
“Say you’re fine.”
“I… I’m okay.” I replied, still in a daze, then my head cleared up. “Li Weiwei, I think I just met my Mr. Right.”
Yes, just like the words of Fairy Zixia but badly delivered. Even though the black-robed man didn’t wear a suit of armor, nor stepped on colorful clothes, nor caught the attention of people, he’s still like an unparalleled hero to me.
“I feel so moved.” I covered my chest and looked at Li Weiwei, “Do you believe in love at first sight?”
Li Weiwei stared at me in silence.
“I believe that pie will not fall from the sky, and with your silly face, I doubt anyone will fall in love with you at first sight.” He said, “Now, get up. You need to get your wound treated.”
Then he dragged me back to the apartment and up to the sorcerer on the sixth floor. Yes, she’s a sorcerer, but because of her personality, Li Weiwei called her an old witch.
She had a green face mask on when she opened the door, and she didn’t look happy. I can tell that from her rough treatment in cleaning the wound. But I didn’t care as I couldn’t help but still be immersed in my memories of the black-robed man.
Until now, I’ve been in a bit of a trance the whole time.
I took the medical bill and put it in my pocket. “I know, you don’t need to rush me.” I wanted to ask him how he found me, but after giving me the bill, he left the roof without looking back.
“So…” Li Peipei started, pulling my attention back to her. “Are you saying you fell in love at first sight with someone whose name, origin or appearance you don’t know?”
Li Peipei summed it up well.
After thinking over her words, I nodded cautiously. “Yes, I fell in love with such a person at first sight.”
Even though I know that that person wasn’t human at all.
