Otome Game no Heroine de Saikyou Survival [WN] - Chapter 150.2
“I wonder if I failed…”
Elena, her face hidden by a hood, muttered to herself as she walked down the street.
Even in the disorderly town of Cutlass, there was little danger on the main street during the daytime. Stalls selling simple meals, cloth and thread for making clothes, and other necessities of life were necessary if people were to live in the city.
Most of the stores were affiliated with one of the four factions, so the shopkeepers, who were paid a substantial sum of money as protection money, had a pale complexion, and few customers shopped at the high prices.
Many of them steal and rob to survive, and I nodded at Elena’s words as I drove away those who looked at us as prey with just a glance.
“Maybe. Still, there’s not much we can do.”
Selling potions was a way to get face time and money.
To get away from this town and into the Khalfaan empire, I needed to be accompanied by a merchant crew that knew the way well. To do so, he would build credit. Probably a lot of money would also be needed. For this purpose, I made an advanced potion with dessert ingredients that I learned from my master, who is a Dark Elf, but apparently the process is not common.
If it was an advanced potion that had not deteriorated, the importance of this one would increase. I dared to take the risk and decided to use it as a weapon, but that Kirli Trading Company man seemed more greedy than a merchant.
“Should we sell it directly to Hogloss Trading Company?”
“Kirli Trading Company is the one who distributes the potions to the Adventurers’ Guild. Selling a small amount, or even a large amount, would antagonize them either way.”
“Let’s hope Kirli Trading Company doesn’t do anything stupid just yet… Aria, what’s wrong?”
“I smell death.”
Elena gave me a curious look as I suddenly stared at a spot.
In a town like this, the streets were never littered with corpses. On the contrary, in this town where people were used to dead bodies, corpses were disposed of quickly to prevent the outbreak of disease.
However, I felt the smell of death on such a front street. The smell of death did not only come from corpses. On the contrary, a freshly made corpse did not have the smell of death, and a person who was dying of disease or something else could smell more like death.
“Aria, over there.”
“…”
Elena noticed a small figure lying in the corner of a dimly lit alley. My eyes saw the magic, she was still breathing.
“A Child.”
Huh?”
Elena gulps slightly when she realizes that I am still alive because of what I said out loud.
What are we going to do? We can’t afford to get involved in the lives and deaths of others. But if we notice and ignore it, it will leave a scar on Elena’s heart.
For a moment, Elena and I locked gazes. With that, I turned towards the alley and Elena caught up with me, running a little faster than usual.
I entered the alley and saw a child, wounded and battered, and I grabbed her by the shoulder to stop her from running up to me.
“A child!”
“Wait, it’s probably sick.”
The child was covered in scratches, but I judged it more by its smell than by its wounds.
If it was some kind of contagious disease, I didn’t want Elena anywhere near it. I pulled out a bottle of highly distilled spirits from my hip pouch, spread a few drops in the palm of my hand to disinfect it, and then approached the child to examine her.
A Dark Elf child? I think this was the first time I had seen a child in this town; he was probably not even ten years old, even considering that he was a Dark Elf. When I examined the boy, I realized that his symptoms were most likely not a contagious disease, but a disease transmitted by the bite of an insect demon that inhabits this area.
It was not airborne, so there was no problem approaching him, but there was a risk of infection if I was in prolonged contact with this boy’s blood.
“–[High Heal]–“
Heal visible wounds with level 3 Light Magic. In my case, this was speed priority compared to Elena’s Light Magic, but it’s good enough for now. In any case, except for the illnesses that could be cured by just sleeping, Recovery Magic does not heal it.
“Aria, this child…”
“We’ll move him to a clean place once I’m done with his treatment. We need to wash off the blood stain first.”
This child’s injuries were not just insect bite wounds. Considering the progression of the disease, he was probably assaulted and abandoned by someone who feared he might pass on the disease.
It could have been a family member or a neighbor. But let’s leave the prying to later and move on for now. The wound is healed, but it is a disease that does not heal on its own. If we gave him potions every day, he might not die, but there was something more important I wanted to try.
I wrapped the child’s whole body in the linen I bought in this town so that I wouldn’t touch the child’s blood, and gently picked him up with both hands.
“Shall I take him to the inn?”
“No, let’s go somewhere else.”
We had not seen a child in this town. I turned my head in the direction of the alleyway, and saw a person rushing toward me from the other side of the alley, breathing heavily.
“You, what are you going to do with that child…”
“What does that have to do with you?”
The boy – Camille, the Dark Elf – narrowed his eyes at my words and gently drew his dagger.
