The Aftermath of the 6th Division
Today, the 7th Division arrived at the fortress to take over our duties.
Rays-sama summoned me to his office to visit the Commander of the 7th Division. What caught me off guard was Rays-sama pointed out I was the one who proposed the 7th Division take over the Lieze Fortress.
When did I do something like that?
“Hooh, so it’s you…”
The 7th Division commander who squinted his eyes as he examined me has curly red hair and red-tinged eyes. He screamed the words “foreigner.”
From what I remembered, the commander of the 7th Division, Thor di Solgia, was from the southern continent. There were quite a few individuals in the palace who had the blood of people from the southern continent coursing through their veins, so someone with an appearance like General Thor was not uncommon.
Still…
“When did I recommend the 7th Division?”
Rays-sama said with his usual mischievous grin, “Don’t play dumb. Didn’t you tell His Majesty the general of the 7th Division was not well known, but he climbed up to his current position from the 4th Division and his way of defending is solid?”
“Wait a minute, we agreed that what I said that time was just a joke!”
“Our great King isn’t so narrow-minded that he’ll dismiss his vassal’s useful advice as a joke.”
… That was it. I would never say something strange in front of the King again… Wait, that might be impossible…
“I felt embarrassed, but also proud, to be thought of in that way by the wise strategist who has Rays-sama’s approval. Still, I’m impressed that you know I used to be in the 4th Division.”
General Thor stated in a pleasant tone, appearing slightly impressed.
AAAHHH…. How embarrassing! It was like being overheard discussing someone behind his back! I wanted to dig a hole and bury myself in it, but I couldn’t! I promise, Rays-sama, you’d pay for this!
I took a deep breath to regain my calm, then asked, “I heard you first joined the 3rd Division after the Commander of the 3rd Division at the time enthusiastically invited you.”
“How did you…? What a surprise. You…Just who are you?”
General Thor asked, his voice shocked and cautious. I was getting carried away again.
“Isn’t he an interesting guy? Apparently, his hobby is researching generals from all over the world.”
Rays-sama remarked, as if to help me…But claiming that my hobby was researching generals was a bit misleading.
“Rays-sama, my hobby is not researching various generals, but reading war records.”
When I answered in that manner, General Thor raised his eyebrows, this time puzzled.
“He’s an interesting guy, isn’t he?”
Rays-sama spoke out again, and General Thor smiled. Oh, he obviously thought of me as eccentric.
“Well, I might need your help in the future, so let’s just get along.”
I shook General Thor’s hand as he extended his hand. That was the end of my first encounter with the commander of the 7th Division, who clearly thought of me as an unusual guy now.
Our two-month stay at Lieze Fortress has come to an end. We, the 10th Division, would now return to the capital.
?
“Hi, guys! I’m back!”
When I returned to the palace, I immediately greeted the canned food research team. I was relieved to see Rufa, Nelfia, Sazabi, and Diku all in good health.
Diku traveled all the way to Lieze Fortress with the canned food, but he returned to the capital the next day, bringing back everything but Lapilia-sama’s jam.
After all, it was only a test to see how canned food would handle the transportation, so the crates containing the still-top-secret project canned food couldn’t simply be left at Lieze Fortress. That’s why I met Diku for the first time in two months today.
“By the way, does anyone know what happened to the 6th Division?”
I’ve been curious about what happened to the 6th Division after the war because I haven’t heard anything about it.
“Nothing in particular,” Nelfia responded.
“Nothing?”
“Yes. General Wickharlt was arrested, while the rest of the 6th Division was being confined in the capital, waiting for their punishment.”
“Why?”
“I believe the kingdom was waiting for Rays-sama’s return?”
Ah, I see.
Rays-sama was someone who the King relied on not only in military affairs but also in internal affairs and in diplomacy. Rays-sama was also present at the Hakusha Plain, so now that Rays-sama has returned to the palace, the punishment for the 6th Division would be decided.
Rays-sama was someone the King relied on not just in military affairs, but also in domestic and diplomatic affairs. Rays-sama was also present at the incident in Hakusha Plain, so the penalty for the 6th Division would be decided now that Rays-sama has returned to the palace.
After a few days…
“I heard the punishment for the 6th Division will be decided at this afternoon’s meeting,” Nelfia said.
The only thing I could do was to to plead to Rays-sama to Wickharlt-sama lenient punishment. I sent an official letter containing this request, signed by me and Luzel, who were involved in the war, to Rays-sama.
I wasn’t sure how much the letter would influence Wickharlt-sama’s judgment. Perhaps it might have no impact at all. However, I wanted to do all I could.
Finally, that night, I heard about the punishment for the 6th Division.
