Reincarnated into a Game as the Hero’s Friend - Chapter 184.2
The men who had rushed in on the shortest route from the Zeavert mansion to the church didn’t have to wait long. In the darkness of the night, the light of the magic lamps and the sound of the hoofs of the horses pulling the carriage, plus the sound of the wheels, were easily noticeable.
There were no soldiers or cavalrymen to escort the carriage, as if they did not want the incident of the attempted poisoning of their legitimate son to be known. The assailants, with grim smiles on their faces, split to the left and right sides of the road and hid in the shadows.
The attacker approaching on the opposite side of the carriage door took out a crossbow. His aim was to shoot Welner when the carriage door opened and put an end to him.
Holding the crossbow with its bolt loaded, he moved closer until the carriage’s magic lamps illuminated his figure, at the same time, he could see a person wearing a full body cloak handling the carriage.
Since he couldn’t succeed with the carriage moving, he released the bolt of his crossbow aiming to stop the carriage by killing its driver.
However, as if the driver had anticipated this, he immediately took up his shield, which was lying on the side of the coach, and covered himself. The arrow bounced back off the shield with a cracking sound.
The man with the crossbow looked astonished.
“You should have at least tried to suppress your killing intent if you’re going to attack a nobleman, and try to outwit him. After all, who doesn’t know that the road from the mansion to the church is the best place to launch an ambush.”
“You, don’t tell me you are!”
The knight with the shield, who was hiding his armor with a cloak, responded with a sly grin.
“I don’t need to tell you my name since you are not a knight, but I will still respond to you. I am Balkey of the Knights of Zeavert, and I don’t think it’s necessary for a knight like me to be present when dealing with the fools who attacked an empty carriage.”
At the same time that Balkey said this, a squadron of guards under Gauter’s command appeared from the surrounding area to encircle the assailants. There were more than 40 guardsmen against about 10 attackers.
Some of them tried desperately to escape and were beaten to a pulp, giving no chance to Balkey to get into action. He looked a little disappointed, perhaps because he had lost the opportunity to wield his weapon.
“Thank you for your cooperation.” (Gauter)
“Thank you for your help. I’m sure the other side will be finished by now as well, so please take care of these bandits.” (Balkey)
“Yes, sir.” (Gauter)
Gauter, who was handed all credit for the Balkey’s work, was more than happy to drag the resisting bandits away.
Soon, Balkey greeted another group that approached.
“Thank you for your service.”
“No, no, no, this is nothing.”
The members of the adventurer party Iron Hammer said this without hesitation. Welner had arranged through Max to track down anyone who might have escaped from the guards’ encirclement, but as it turned out, there was no need to do so.
However, since the arrangement was, in Welner’s opinion, “just in case,” Balkey had no particular complaints about the arrangement. Handing over the promised reward for the Iron Hammer, Balkey turned the carriage around to head back to the Zeavert mansion.
“Well, how did it go with Augen?”
***
“Ugh…”
“Shut up for a minute.”
Augen tied up the two men so tightly that the rope seemed to be on the verge of shredding, and then he lightly punched one of the men who groaned in pain.
While confirming that the two men were secured by the attendants, Augen glared at the two men in frustration.
“I didn’t think there were only two of them. Maybe we should have gone to Balkey.”
Augen looked disappointed as he muttered this, then looked down at Clara, who was shivering on the floor.
“Clara, was it? I’m going to have you arrested for the attempted assassination of the Viscount.”
“Ye, yes, but, um, but, my mother and my brother…”
“That’s a different matter. I’ll have to put that on hold for now.”
Augen’s annoyed expression was a natural reaction for a person of this world. Even nobles and aristocrats would deal harshly with each other for crimes such as poisoning, but if a person below the rank of commoner tried to harm a noble, the crime would be even more serious.
Even if there was room for sympathy, it was not a crime that could be forgiven. Moreover, the knights had no reason to be kind to a person who had attempted to kill the legitimate son of a family to which they had sworn allegiance
Clara, along with the captured men, was instructed to be taken to the guardroom.
The reason why they did not do anything rough was that Welner had instructed them to ensure their safety because they were the thread that would lead to the mastermind behind the plot. However, the situation did not really require any rough handling.
“Squad leader, there was a strange package in the back room that was locked.”
“Strange? What is it?”
“The contents appear to be some kind of weed. There’s quite a bit of it piled up in the room.”
One of the knights who was checking to see if there were any remnants in the building reported this to Augen. Thinking for a moment, Augen looked reluctant.
“That could be poison. Don’t touch it and let the guards handle it. Also, don’t do anything that can mess up with evidence.”
“Yes, sir.”
No one here was an expert on poisons. It would be a shame to do something unnecessary and cause damage. Deciding that it was best to leave it to the guards, Augen watched the Knight run off to call the guards.
If the whole package was filled with poison, how much poison did it contain? How and where were they going to use it?
When such thoughts occurred to him, a discouraged Augen whispered, “It seems like it was more of a problem than I thought. I hope it won’t be troublesome.”
