Reincarnated into a Game as the Hero’s Friend - Chapter 227.2
[As per the order of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, we will not attack anyone who comes out of the fort without a weapon! We will allow you to return safely to your village!]
The agitation of the people inside the fort was growing. The heroes who were on their way to defeat the Demon King were the hope of the commoners. The fact that the person directly related to those heroes was hostile to them was unsettling.
From the point of view of the commoners in the noble territories, the direct dignitaries were undoubtedly their local lords, but there was a difference between that and spiritual respect and expectation. They naturally respected heroes and the person helping heroes, Welner.
The few Coltrezis knights posted at the fort shouted at the soldiers, who were beginning to get upset, not to listen to their enemies.
What the knights actually felt about this situation, no one could tell, but one could see that the knights were at least faithful to their duty.
“Besides, the Crown Prince is the prince leading this country, right? Is it really safe to fight against such a person, really?” (Soldier 1)
“The knight said something about a King coming from the Marquis’s family.” (Soldier 2)
“I wonder if it’s true.” (Soldier 1)
[I shall repeat the Crown Prince’s order. If you come out of the fort without weapons, we promise to return you safely!]
In Welner’s opinion, making them understand that a higher authority was involved would be more effective against those who are forced to obey by authority.
A nobleman was more fearsome than a knight, and a prince was greater than any nobleman according to the people.
The soldiers looked at each other without knowing what to do.
The knight of Coltrezis shouted at them once more: “Don’t believe what the enemy said.”
The next moment, a sound echoed from the side of the besieging army. Huge boxes were launched one after another from several catapults. The boxes were flying unstably from above the fort and their contents spread into the air, reflecting the glistening, leaning sunlight as they spread and swooped down into the fort.
As soon as soldiers saw what had fallen, their eyes changed color as greed took over them.
“Silver, silver coins!” (Soldier 1)
“There are even gold coins! What’s in that bag!” (Soldier 2)
“I think those over there are jewels!” (Soldier 1)
“Wait, wait, stay where you are!” (Knight)
The knight’s voice was quickly drowned out and the conscripted villagers in military gear swarmed over the gold, silver and jewels that had fallen to the ground. Some lay on their stomachs on the ground and scrambled for the fallen objects, while others stepped over the man on his stomach in an attempt to get hold of the larger jewels.
One knocked down a person next to him and tried to take what the other man had. Some cursed at soldiers who tried to restrain them. Some even pulled out their swords and threatened to take away what they had picked up.
Finally, one of the squires got angry and pulled out his sword, slashing at a person who didn’t listen.
Despite that, soldiers continued to throw away their weapons and dived into the pile to scavenge for coins. Others run around also ignoring orders to get a few goodies of their own.
Squires and knights who lost their composure and mischievously wielded their weapons in an attempt to somehow get their orders heard, were hit from behind by soldiers carrying bags of collected coins and fell down together.
One of the soldiers, who had been holding his bow inside the wall, shouted out. This was because the royal troops were coming towards the fort with their shields at the ready. However, the knights who should have been giving instructions were trying to contain the chaos inside the fort, and loud shouts about the jewels or gold belonging to them were heard from all over the place, so the warning call itself did not reach them.
Some of the soldiers waiting by the walls fired sporadic arrows, but that did not stop the Royal Army.
The commoners, frightened by the knights and squires wielding weapons, looked at each other and opened the gates of the fort from the inside and fled outside. They believed the statement that they would not be attacked if they went outside the fort without weapons.
It was not a lie. Those who ran out were not attacked. This was because the main battlefield had already shifted to the interior of the fort, as Zeavert Knights were using ladders and climbing over the fort walls. They had already started to enter the fort.
In the blink of an eye, the Zeavert Corps entered the fort and formed up in ranks and took up arms.
“We don’t have to pursue those who flee, but we must show no mercy to those who resist!” (Augen)
Augen, who had climbed over the wall with a ladder, shouted at his knights and, swinging his sword, slashed at those resisting inside the fort.
The knights who rode into the fort with Augen secured the gate to keep it open. The soldiers on Coltrezis’ side, who saw the avalanche of Zeavert Knights slipping past the fleeing farmers through the gate, also ran towards the back gate of the fort and started to flee.
Only a very few knights and squires tried to resist, but the invasion of the fort caused even some of the knights to flee, so the time taken to overrun the fort was very short.
