The Legendary Mechanic in Marvel Universe - Chapter 145
Chapter 145 Doc Ock and Green Goblin
Tonight, the sky was clear, the moon was bright. Despite the road being illuminated brightly by the combined shine of streetlight and the moon, human figures were scarce in the streets or the small alleys.
The night in New York City was tranquil as if its energy was drained empty due to its boisterous daytime counterpart.
At the moment, it was almost 2 a.m., the time when everyone was worn out. Most of the people had already entered their dreamland, including Norman. Ever since he was elected to be the mayor, he had done a great job superficially. He moved out of his luxurious manor and moved into a medium-priced residential building in Queens.
The residential building consisted of twelve floors. He lived right in between. He bought a room on the ninth floor which had three bedrooms and a living room. In the whole room, only he and his butler, Bernard, were living.
Presently, Norman was snoring in his bedroom without realizing what kind of monster his recent actions had given birth to.
Thunderous yet muffled noises suddenly rang out in the residential building. The entire building was trembling as though experiencing an earthquake.
An ear-piercing sound of scraping steel finally jolted Norman out of his dreamland. Turning his body to face the moonlight, he saw an odd four-clawed monster standing on the balcony. The monster had broken the protective window and was climbing into the room,
Norman reacted instantly. Without opening the light, he swiftly pressed the alarm on the bedside. This alarm was connected straight to the New York Police Department. Since it’s an express line, the cops will arrive within 5 minutes. Then, with only his pants on, he hurriedly crawled toward the door.
A rustling sound struck. Before Normal could reach the door, he was clamped by Doc Ock’s tentacles and instantly dragged toward Doc Ock. Norman was scared out of his wits. His body trembled and was unable to squeeze even an ounce of his energy.
Doc Ock clenched Norman with his “hand” and silently left the room. With his four tentacles alternately piercing the building, they immediately carried Doc Ock and Norman to the rooftop.
At present, the hallways of the residential building were lit up due to the commotion caused by Doc Ock. Sounds of curses, screams, and calls to the New York Police Department could be heard.
Bernard the butler also was jolted up long ago. He took out the handgun under his pillow and rushed into Norman’s bedroom. But the current state of the bedroom was a mess and there was no sign of Norman.
Bernard ran to the gigantic hole in the wall and took a peek outside. He saw the disappearing shadow of two tentacles flash by. The wrecked bedroom and the destroyed protective window. All of these indicated to Bernard that his master was in a dire situation and the perpetrator was abnormal.
Rushing to the living room, he dialed a number according to his memory. He didn’t know where this call would end up, except that his master, Norman, told him if anything happened beyond his imagination, he must call this number by all means.
The residential building was near the sea. Gusts of wind assailed the rooftop.
Doc Ock raised Norman high with his tentacles. When the sea breeze struck, the stunned Norman snapped out of it and instantly thought of something, recovering some of his rationales.
“Who are you? What do you want?” Fear drove Norman to voice out these questions.
Through the Intracranial Transmission Helmet, Doc Ock angrily leered at the frightened Norman.
“Norman Osborn. Don’t you even recognize me?” Although Doc Ock’s voice was raspy, Norman was able to tell who he was right away. He realized he was abducted by Otto and his heart shivered. It was unexpected to him that Otto, who was usually soft and tolerant, was hiding this kind of weapon and even dared to carry out this madness.
He pondered for a bit and knew begging Otto was pointless and couldn’t save his life. Moreover, bringing up his usual arrogance and snapping at Otto maybe would send him to the afterlife quicker…
“Ha! Ha! HA! HA! Ha…” Norman suddenly let out a loud laugh as though a patient had given up on being cured. He was going to die regardless, might as well vent out his emotions.
“Otto, are you furious? Have you gone mad? Are you angry or perhaps desperate? Do you know, when you refused to join me in genetics research, I was just as angry as you are, as desperate as you are! You probably are unaware I’m born with a congenital disease. Due to my genes, I can’t live past the age of fifty! And now, I’m already 43. When you left Oscorp, I was just 30. Filled with vigor, I thought I could come up with a cure by myself without your help. But I failed, my intelligence is incomparable to yours. Thirteen years, nothing at all.”
Facing Norman’s story, Doc Ock was unsure what to make of and remained silent.
Norman also didn’t wish to hear Otto’s answers either and kept talking, “Thirteen years, I’m getting crazier and more desperate with each passing day. If I had you, I believe I’d be healthy by now. Heh! Yet you gave up on me, I’m beyond salvation… Then, what right do you have to be healthy and alive?!”
Facing Otto all of a sudden, he howled vehemently. After the howl, he spoke with a mocking tone, “Hmph! You even went to Nepal. You’re even a part of El Tech Company. You’re going to reach the peak of your life soon… I am jealous! I hate seeing you well off! I’ll do whatever it takes to oust you from NYU! I like to see your furious look!”
He burst out into maniacal laughter again with his bloodshot eyes, as though losing his mind.
Doc Ock stared at the manically laughing Norman and mumbled, “So that’s it. Norman, you truly are a selfish petty man.”
Unexpectedly, Norman caught onto Doc Ock’s words, “I am petty, I am selfish. I’m dying anyway, why should I make you happy?!”
Doc Ock no longer desired to chatter nonsense with Norman. No words could enter their ears as this kind of person was engrossed in their delusions. Reasoning with him was equivalent to teaching a duck to speak, a pointless effort. On top of that, Doc Ock could vividly sense his mind was crumbling soon. He was already on the brink of madness.
The Intracranial Transmission Device was still immature. The longer Doc Ock wore, the clearer he understood that the device would amplify his inner demon and erase his conscience, becoming a deranged monster ultimately.
Hence, he refused to stall any longer. Staring at Norman, he uttered in a solemn voice, “Then, let us die together!”
Doc Ock was going to murder Norman before taking off the helmet and jumping down the building, ending everything once and for all. Having this in mind, he clamped the tentacle, intending to snap Norman into pieces. Out of his imagination, he felt nothing from the tentacle. There was nothing in the tentacle.
In his fury and astonishment, he looked around and realized Norman had escaped from the tentacle, landing on the rooftop.
Norman, who was on the rooftop, had a different appearance. His white skin turned green and was covered in a greenish-gooey liquid. Even his pants were almost corroded by it. Not only did the liquid possess corrosive properties, but it was also almost slimy. Due to this liquid, Norman managed to slip out of Doc Ock’s tentacle.
At the moment, Norman was in a sorry state. He was convulsing incessantly and holding his last breath. The liquid blocked his throat, causing him to cough uncontrollably.
Finally, the alarm on Norman’s bedside played its role. Sounds of sirens blaring could be heard. Doc Ock didn’t wish to delay any longer. Raising one of his tentacles, he stabbed it toward Norman.
A giant hole was penetrated onto the rooftop, and even the water pipe was penetrated. Under high pressure, the water spouted up high.
However, this stab failed to land on Norman. Just the moment before he was stabbed, his transformation was seemingly completed. He dodged the tentacle in the nick of time by deftly rolling aside.
