The Legendary Mechanic in Marvel Universe - Chapter 72
Chapter 72 Peter’s Beef with Matt
In the first floor’s lobby of El Tech Company, the trio exited the elevator.
Heather and Matt were giggling together since they had accepted each other. If it were not for them still working, Leo felt they would hold each other’s hand already!
Behind the two of them, Leo could sense the familiarity he always felt in his past life, the discontent with others’ public displays of affection.
After leaving the elevator, Matt bid farewell to Heather and Leo and was preparing to leave for the law firm right next door.
Matt, all of a sudden, paused, twitching his ears, before continuing to act normally.
Heather was unaware of Matt’s anomaly, but Leo did. However, Leo did not know what Matt discovered.
Although Heather was unaware of the instant, seeing Matt had yet to leave for the law firm, she thought Matt was unwilling to leave her.
Therefore, she smiled endearingly, “Matt, you should hurry up. Later the Chairman and I will show someone around the company. They have been waiting for some time. I’ll come and look for you at the firm after I get off from work. We can have dinner together.”
It was unknown what was on Matt’s mind but he suddenly said, “I just thought for a bit, there aren’t any important matters for me in the firm. Maybe we can meet the journalists from Daily Bugle together. Is that alright, Mr. Erwin?”
Leo was puzzled by Matt’s inconsistent words. What he said upstairs was completely different from what he said right now. Why did Matt suddenly wish to remain? Was it related to whatever he discovered just now?
Leo abruptly recalled that when Matt paused, he was facing El Tech Company’s lobby. In the lobby right now were Mary Jane and Peter Parker. Perhaps Matt knew Peter? Did he even recognize Peter’s identity, Spider-man? However, when Leo received the call from the receptionist, why was Matt indifferent to Peter’s name?!
Leo was unable to pinpoint the accurate reason. But this was Leo’s most reasonable deduction or else why would Matt suddenly search for reasons to meet Mary Jane and Peter together with them?
Moreover, judging from Matt’s stiff expression, he might have a history with Peter. All of this was Leo’s guessing, whether or not it was correct, further verifications were required.
“Sure, it’s no problem with an extra person. Let’s go to the parlor now.” To further verify it, Leo was only required to silently watch the drama.
Thus, the trio began heading to the first floor’s lobby together.
The closer they reached the lobby, the clearer the heartbeats Matt heard. Indeed, the one in the lobby right now was the Spider-man he met three years ago.
Matt was incapable of sight, so the methods he used to differentiate someone were not by their face, but by their sound and scent.
The scent was easily understandable since everyone had their unique scent. Using his exceptional smell, Matt could even distinguish minuscule differences between the scents.
However, the sound was not just pointed to someone’s voice. Matt was capable of using sound to distinguish someone including their heartbeats. Everyone’s physique was different and the rate of their heartbeats was different, thus it caused a difference between them.
Four years ago when Matt was still in high school, someone had caused a huge mess in Hell’s Kitchen. It was a person with heartbeats far beyond common people and hopped around on top of the roofs as he did.
During that time, the mobs of Hell’s Kitchen saw that person and shouted ‘It’s Spider-man!’ Therefore, Matt learned the name of that person.
For half a month, Spider-man came to Hell’s Kitchen almost every day. Even during the daytime, the mobs were forced to shoot their guns all over the place. However, Spider-man did not kill the mobs, he generally just subdued them and waited for the cops to arrest them.
But the mobs in Hell’s Kitchen already had some ties with the local police force. Soon, they would be released.
The mobs, who had just come out from the station, became even more furious. They began to oppress the civilians in Hell’s Kitchen like a tyrant to the point they would kill if there were any slight misunderstandings.
The appearance of Spider-man caused the outwardly peaceful Hell’s Kitchen into pandemonium. Hence, for the sake of Hell’s Kitchen’s peace, Matt fought with Spider-man.
In the end, Matt found out the agility he took pride in was incomparable to Spider-man, not to mention speed and strength. Fortunately, Spider-man was targeting criminals only and did not cause any unnecessary for him such as handing him to the cops.
However, Spider-man kept running around in Hell’s Kitchen and leaving even more chaos behind. Facing no choice, every night Matt would chase after Spider-man, preaching his ‘love and reason’ to Spider-man.
In the end, perhaps it was Spider-man who was annoyed by Matt or Spider-man who noticed his method was unable to solve Hell’s Kitchen’s problems. He left Hell’s Kitchen in anger after cursing Matt a ‘stubborn donkey’ a few times.
Before Spider-man left, Matt even shouted at him, “Hell’s Kitchen doesn’t welcome you! Don’t ever come back again!”
After leaving an ‘Okay’ behind, Spider-man disappeared in the night. Afterward, Spider-man began appearing in Queens and never returned to Hell’s Kitchen ever again.
Thus, the beef between Matt and Peter was set four years ago.
Furthermore, during that time, Peter casually defeated Matt and even pulled off Matt’s mask. So ever since then, Peter knew who Daredevil was but Matt knew nothing about Spider-man.
Today, Matt finally heard the familiar heartbeats again from four years ago and finally knew Spider-man’s name, Peter Parker.
While Matt was having a flashback, the trio almost reached the parlor. Peter sensed someone was closing in and pulled Mary Jane to stand-by by the door.
Seeing Leo in the lead from afar, Mary Jane felt she really met Leo’s good-looking face somewhere before. Mary Jane’s memory was far better when it came to the face. Soon enough, she recalled the evening when she met Leo in Hell’s Kitchen.
“Pete, the one in the middle is Leo Erwin and I remembered him. He’s not lying, I really met him half a year ago in Hell’s Kitchen. But based on my memory, he had just arrived in Hell’s Kitchen for the first time. Who would’ve thought, in just that short time, he’s the sole board director of a company.”
