The Tanaka Family Reincarnates - Chapter 98
Edited.
Martha’s Grandfather [Part 1]
*flash* *ding*!
Imperial Japan…
A country located east of the Kingdom.
The Imperial Family founded the country and were deified by their citizens.
The country had been in isolation for more than 300 years, but due to bad weather last year, they were currently suffering from food shortages.
The First Prince of the Imperial Family, Tasuku Hinomoto, has entered the Kingdom to seek aid.
The language they spoke was Imperial Japanese
As no-one could understand it other than the Imperial Japanese people, it proved to be an obstacle to diplomacy.
Goo*le… no, Joshua answered effortlessly. That *ding* at the beginning was only their auditory hallucination.
“That said, why is Emma-sama able to speak Imperial Japanese? When it had been impossible to trade with Imperial Japan even with the Rothschild Company’s help!”
‘You could have told me about it earlier’, Joshua lamented.
If even the Rothschild Company considered it impossible, the siblings understood that the Kingdom would, in turn, be greatly troubled about this. They knew that, but…
“Why is it that everyone is unable to learn the language, that’s what we want to know…?”
‘Everyone should study it harder, seriously…’ said George, also known as Wataru, who couldn’t speak English at all in his previous life. Seemed like the pot was calling the kettle black.
“It wasn’t a matter of not studying enough Imperial Japanese, because based on the results from the dedicated research conducted by the Rothschild Company. They concluded that Imperial Japanese people probably have a different language sensory organ that people from other countries[1] don’t possess. Even the newborn children from foreign countries that were raised in Imperial Japan, couldn’t understand Imperial Japanese. On the other hand, an Imperial Japanese person who grew up in Balitu was able to speak Imperial Japanese when they started studying the language.”
They shouldn’t have done such a savage human experiment… The child, who was raised in Imperial Japan, didn’t deserve that.
[T/N 1: The author is loosely attempting to explain why ‘language’ is a very difficult barrier to overcome in this world, which is an important plot device. If it helps, consider that the story is set in a medieval environment and scientific study may not be sufficiently advanced to explain the mechanisms of language learning difficulties correctly.]
“Then, won’t that person who could speak both Balitu and Imperial Japanese be helpful somehow?”
There should be someone in the Kingdom who could speak Balitu.
“Well, unfortunately, the experiment was conducted 80 years ago, and we also don’t know where that person is. However, thanks to that, Balitu had some interactions with Imperial Japan even during their isolation, and there are some Imperial Japanese who can speak simple Balitu, in the form of greetings.”
Eighty years ago… Certainly, even in this different world, people have started paying attention to human rights in recent years. People must be hesitant to do another human experiment.[2]
[T/N 2: The author is further attempting to back up the plot point that ‘language’ is a very difficult barrier to overcome in this world (see note 1), by signifying that, to the people of this world, ‘overcoming this barrier is on the level of taboo’. We appreciate your continued suspension of disbelief.]
“But, Imperial Japanese people can learn foreign languages, right?”
According to what Joshua had said, the Imperial Japanese had no difficulties speaking a foreign language. In actuality, Imperial Prince Tasuku didn’t know many words, but his diction (pronunciation and so on) was easily understood by the Kingdom people.
“Yes, that is true. Perhaps it could be called national character, but the country, having been in isolation for a long time, did not have the practice of studying foreign languages yet… And there wasn’t a need to. They only started making efforts a few months ago, when they finally felt a sense of crisis from the food shortages caused by last year’s bad weather. The rumored genius Imperial Prince Tasuku is able to speak as much Kingdom language[3] as he does because he’s simply talented. Other people would need a few more years to learn.”
[T/N 3: The kingdom has not been given a name, hence Kingdom language used to refer to the language.]
The teachers themselves don’t understand Imperial Japanese. There is no choice but to memorize the words from gestures. Imperial Prince Tasuku was just special.
While they were talking, Martha brought black tea and the sweets from Joshua.
Tarts made from fruits that grow in summer and iced tea.
“Thank you, Martha!”
The siblings thanked Martha and started eating with relish.
Black tea with a lot of ice was perfect for a hot summer.
