Transmigrated Farmgirl's Scheme to Get Rich - Chapter 9
Mrs. Liang knew that her son had messed up and scolded him in a low voice, “Feng’er, shut up! What nonsense are you talking about!”
“I haven’t been speaking any nonsense! Isn’t he just ……”
Before he could finish his sentence, Lu Junming had already leapt in front of him and punched him in the face.
When she saw that her beloved son had been beaten up, Mrs. Liang couldn’t stand it. She stood in front of her son and yelled at Lu Junming, “How could you hit others! Is there no one to control you? Do you not have any discipline?”
How dare Mrs. Liang mention discipline when she’s raised such a failure of a son!
Lu Junming rubbed his fist, scaring Mo Feng into hiding behind his mother. He glared angrily at the mother and son, and knowing that they’d never apologise to him, he said coldly, “I might not be disciplined, but I have my fists. Your son has nothing!”
The governing official came over and patted Lu Junming’s shoulder, “Junming, calm down. This piece of garbage’s words aren’t worth taking to heart.”
Mo Feng rubbed his cheeks and spat out a mouthful of blood. He turned to Mrs. Liang and said, “Mum, it’s blood!”
This precious son of hers, who Mrs. Liang had never laid a finger on, made her incredibly distressed to the point where she could only wordlessly try to comfort her son.
Everyone felt that Mo Feng deserved to be beaten, and no one felt sorry for him. Mo Yan saw that Lu Junming’s face was white with anger, so she tried to comfort him in a small voice, “Lu Junming, don’t be angry, I’ll tell you a story if you want me to.”
As soon as he heard her speak, Mo Feng turned around and shouted at Mo Yan, “What are you talking about? It’s all your fault for causing this trouble!”
“Come at me if you have the guts. Pick on someone your own size!” Lu Junming had calmed down and his voice had regained an even tone.
At this moment Cao Zhang came over to Lu Junming, “Brother Lu, please don’t take it personally. Mo Feng just doesn’t have a filter on his mouth and bears no ill will.”
Mrs. Liang was busy trying to help Cao Zhang, “Yes! He doesn’t mean any ill will.”
Lu Junming didn’t bother to say much to the mother and son duo and gestured towards the governing official, “Sir, Mo Yan is really good at telling stories, and they’re all new stories that I guarantee no one has heard before. Why don’t we let her tell an excerpt and ask everyone to judge?”
Mo Yan was so embarrassed that she whispered to try and stop him, “Lu Junming, don’t be ridiculous. I can’t!”
“We’ll only know whether or not you can or can’t if you try. Just tell me the part you promised to tell me today.”
Lu Junming took Mo Yan and went to the front, speaking towards the old storyteller who had frozen there, “Old gentleman, your story isn’t interesting in the slightest. How about listening to this little girl speak for a while?”
Mo Yan still wanted to refuse, but Lu Junming pushed her behind the table wordlessly and smacked the table with the storyteller’s piece of wood to signify the start of the storytelling. With that, he stepped back and stood with Cao Zhang.
This time the crowd was silent, and the people had stopped chatting and giggling. Mo yan looked to one side, and both Mr. Tian and Cao Zhang smiled and nodded towards her, indicating that she should start.
Mo Yan cleared her throat and asked, “What does everyone want to hear?”
“Asking what everyone wants to hear? Are you capable enough?” Someone in the crowd said.
The storyteller was resentful and couldn’t believe a young girl knew how to tell stories. How would he have known that in her previous life, Mo Yan had graduated university with a degree in Chinese culture and knew much more than he did?
“Then tell us about what happened after Physician Fan Li’s retirement!”
The old man thought he had given Mo Yan a challenge. Not many of those present knew about Fan Li, and even if they did, they only knew that he had assisted King Goujian in restoring his country. Even Mr. Tian only knew a little about what happened after his retirement, let alone anyone else.
Still a little nervous, she cleared her throat again and said, “Well, after assisting the King Goujian restore the Kingdom of Yue, Physician Fan saw that it would be dangerous for him to continue to work together with him, so he resigned from his post. He lived in Ludi, near the riverbed as a farmer. One thing that’s little-known is that he was actually one of the first people who developed trade as we know it today……”
Mo Yan’s voice was clear, crisp and pleasant to ear. She spoke at a good tempo and enunciated each word well.
After she finished, Lu Junming started by clapping and shouting, and even Cao Zhang and Mr. Tian couldn’t help but clap their hands in admiration!
The storyteller walked up to the governing official and bowed. “Sir, I am ashamed that I am not even as good a storyteller as a young girl. I will take my leave now.”
Looking at the old gentleman’s despondent back, Mo Yan felt a little guilt. She saw his piece of wood on the table, picked it up and went after him.
“Sir, you forgot this!”
The old gentleman turned back and took the piece of wood, as he looked at Mo Yan with a helpless face, “Little girl, just who are you?”
Mo Yan’s heart shook. She was so focused on the story that she had forgotten who she was now, and where did she learn these stories? How was she going to explain to the villagers?
“These stories are all told to me by the gods in my dreams.”
“There is a time when the clouds and flowers in a dream will disperse!” The old gentleman straightened his back and walked away. Mo Yan didn’t understand what he meant by this. Was he saying that I wouldn’t be a storyteller for very long?
When Mo Yan turned around, she saw that the bowl for collecting wheat had been placed on the table, but very few people had gone to put wheat there. The crowd discussed with each other, yet no one actually stepped up and gave anything.
The amount of wheat received today was less than half of that received yesterday. The governing official of Chenzhong Village put the wheat into a linen bag and handed it to Mrs. Liang, which Mo Feng grabbed, “That’s all?”
Mo Yan went up to him and curtsied, “Sir, I wasn’t a good storyteller. I can’t accept this!”
Mo Feng clutched the wheat bag tightly, “Why not? Otherwise, I’d have been beaten up for nothing. You have to continue telling stories tomorrow, and every day after that!”
After he said that, Mo Yan thought about Lu Junming, but when she tried to search for him, she saw that he had already gone far away.
Cao Zhang shook his folding fan and came over, “Yan’er, you spoke very well, but where did you learn this story?”
Mo Yan didn’t know how to explain. Mr. Tian came over and said, “I have some story books that Mo Yan borrowed and read. She probably learnt this story from there.”
Cao Zhang was sceptical. He should have read all the books in Mr. Tian’s place, so why didn’t he see any of these storybooks he was talking about?
Mo Yan nodded gratefully towards Mr. Tian, who smiled at her slightly.
As the crowd dispersed, Mrs. Liang returned home and looked at her son’s cheeks carefully under an oil lamp, sighing with distress.
When she heard Mo Yan and Mo Ling laughing in the inner room, she was furious and shouted, “Yan’er! How did you get involved with that Lu boy? Tell me carefully!”
“I just met him at the pond. He was fishing while I was checking on the ducks”
“From tomorrow onwards, you aren’t allowed to go to the pond anymore!”
“What about the ducks?”
“Stew them, sell them, I don’t care. Just don’t hang out with him anymore!”
Post-edit notes: Ok, wow. Just when I thought Mrs. Liang and Mo Feng were getting nicer, they reverted to how they were initially. Although to be fair, there wasn’t anything that could’ve potentially changed their personality.
