Unaware that My Legitimate Sister is My Husband - Chapter 10
Chapter 10
(4.2)
That person’s maternal family had a noble background, in the residence, her words were final, and even the old matriarch and the master didn’t dare to easily say any harsh word to her. She had heard about all of these even before she started being a maid on duty.
All year-round, Xi Heng lived in seclusion and did not easily show her face.
But the servants around her were not to be messed with.
She heard that a few years ago, concubine Wang had raised a fight with Xi Heng in order to compete for the top position in the residence. Her noisy bickering provoked that person’s irritation.
Later, under Yan momo’s order, she was grabbed and slapped in the face three hundred times right in front of the servants. Her whole face was swollen, and she fainted on the spot, on the brink of death. She had to recuperate for more than a year before it could be said that she had survived the incident. Two of her close servants had also been directly beaten to death.
At that time, there was the faint sound of a guqin being played in the courtyard, like a cold clear spring flowing into the bottom of a stream, while miserable screams and bitter cries were suddenly heard. The two sounds mixed together, one coming from inside, the other from outside, created an extremely singular and desolate music.
Seeing the sixth miss in front of her eyes, Qiu Feng guessed that she must have been punished. Although the sixth miss was young, she obviously looked delicate and arrogant, and now that she had been humiliated by such means, she might get sick because of the anxiety in her heart.
If she was the Xi Xian of her past life and had encountered such a thing, she would definitely have fallen ill because of her overanxiety, but now she was holding onto her mind state, telling herself that she couldn’t be afraid.
She had a card in her hand, and if she used it well, she might be able to escape her fate.
But now was not the time to reveal herself.
She couldn’t fight against someone with such an unequal status, even if she held a killer weapon in her hand, she needed to find and wait for the right opportunity. That was a principle that the emperor had taught her for many years.
When she entered the room, her concubine mother saw her sorry figure and her hands started to shake, in distress for her daughter. She asked a servant to boil water and prepare a ginger soup, before asking her about what happened.
Xi Xian didn’t want to hide it, because in her past life, when she went to curry favor with her legitimate sister, it was mostly under her concubine mother’s instigation, so she wanted to make her concubine mother clearly distinguish the situation.
A deeply scheming and moody legitimate daughter, no matter what, wouldn’t walk on the same path as the two of them mother and daughter. This matter should have been made clear a long time ago.
So, Xi Xian sat down, raised her eyes and said in fear: “Yiniang, this person is so terrifying, your daughter is going to die of fear because of her.” Her hand that was holding on to her silky handkerchief was trembling slightly.
Concubine Qin frowned, “What’s wrong with your legitimate sister?”
Xi Xian couldn’t tell clearly, and also didn’t dare to make up lies, so she could only say: “She insisted on combing my hair, I refused, she suddenly broke the comb, the look in her eyes seemed like she wanted to eat me alive, we’ll be better off staying away from her…”
Concubine Qin paused, before laughing at her: “That is her liking you, otherwise why would she be willing to comb your hair?”
(TL’s note : once again, née Qin is using the masculine form, but I’m translating using the feminine form, for it to make sense in english, but the literal translation should actually be : “That is him liking you, otherwise why would he be willing to comb your hair?”)
“You’ve lost decorum today, tomorrow you must dress up nicely and prettily and go to the main courtyard to pay your respects to her, this way, you won’t lose decorum. If the master hears that you threw a temper at her, what will it be like? At that time, you will be the one to suffer.”
Xi Xian’s eyes opened wide in disbelief. Her tears fell down and she sniffled, “I don’t want to.”
Concubine Qin was holding a bowl of bird’s nest soup, that she had yet to finish. She poked her nose and sighed: “She is a good person, she heard that when I gave birth to you, my body deteriorated, so she specially instructed the kitchen to deliver us bird’s nest soup every day, and she even called a highly skilled doctor to come and check my pulse when you were not here today.”
“That’s really a good child, the more I look at her, the more I like her.”
(TL’s note : again, née Qin used the masculine form for all of her sentences.)
Xi Xian, a bit surprised, frowned without answering.
They didn’t continue on arguing over the topic of her legitimate sister, because Xi Xian knew it was useless to argue with her concubine mother, and she did not dare to tell her the secret that her legitimate sister might be a child born out of an adulterous relationship. Later, concubine Qin admitted her mistake, in order to coax her daughter to smile.
At night, as Xi Xian laid in bed, she felt sad.
Her legitimate sister was so tough and powerful, she lost to her in terms of strength.
The night was cool like water. Xi Xian fell asleep, revealing half of her white and tender arms, as her fingers were strongly squeezing the brocade quilt, which became wrinkled. She was frowning, uneasy even in her dreams.
It felt as if someone was gently caressing her face, holding her jaw to slowly look at her, the palm of that hand was hot like fire, yet the fingertips were cold, making her feel even more uneasy.
