[Vol. 2] Chapter 14: Encounter with a Demon?
Not only was Ifia shocked, but Rudeni was also surprised. They never expected to reunite with an old acquaintance in the church, especially in such an awkward moment.
“Sister, please forgive our impudence. Can you pretend we were never here?” When Ifia muttered Rudeni’s name, Jessica standing on the side didn’t hear it. As a result, when the church clergy caught them, their original plan to sneak a peek at Saint Tiffany’s prayer immediately changed.
Time to make a quick getaway!
Jessica, with her hands clasped in front of her, pleaded with a look of desperation at Rudeni. It seemed like she was ready to cling to her legs if she refused. To escape this predicament, Jessica was throwing all shame out the window.
“I know this request is a bit much, but we…”
“Fine, just don’t do it again. Now, go!” However, before Jessica could continue, Rudeni interrupted her, then looked up at Lucy showing her face in the tree, waving her hand to signal her to come down quickly.
Seeing her plea for mercy succeed, Jessica immediately turned around excitedly to receive Lucy.
Leaving Ifia and Rudeni to exchange glances.
As temporary companions who experienced the witch-hunting incident together, especially after Rudeni disappeared last time, there were many things for the two to discuss when they met again. However, Rudeni seemed to have some concerns and didn’t openly reveal her acquaintance with Ifia.
The quiet didn’t last too long. The next moment, Rudeni spoke quietly, almost in a whisper, “Ifia, meet me here at ten o’clock tonight!”
After saying that, as Jessica and Lucy approached from the distance, Rudeni immediately resumed a normal expression. She turned to Jessica, giving a serious admonition, “Miss, sometimes curiosity can bring trouble upon oneself. Please do not violate the church’s rules again.”
Feeling that her words might not be enough to suppress Jessica, Rudeni added, “Saint Tiffany holds extraordinary significance for the church. Even nobles of high rank will face severe consequences for offending the church.”
“Now, please leave!”
Jessica, exceptionally obedient at this moment, nodded repeatedly towards Rudeni, assuring her multiple times that she would not offend again and would leave the front hall area immediately.
Just as Jessica was about to turn away, Rudeni offered a final reminder, “Because Saint Tiffany is about to conduct the prayer ceremony, the church will send dedicated personnel for patrol soon. If they catch you, it won’t be as easygoing as dealing with me.”
One sentence dispelled Jessica’s intention to go against the rules. Until the three of them, on their way back to the dormitory after having dinner in the cafeteria, Jessica continued to grumble in a gloomy tone, “After returning from the church, I’m going to learn how to climb trees.”
“Darn it, we were so close to witnessing the prayer ceremony!”
“Just you wait. One day, I’ll also conduct a prayer ceremony at the church!”
In response to Jessica’s frustration, Lucy consoled her helplessly, “Jessica, think about it positively. We were just sent back this time. If we were caught sneaking in, it would be much worse.”
Ifia didn’t join the conversation between Jessica and Lucy. Instead, she silently pondered along the way. She never expected Rudeni to be working inside the church.
[System, why didn’t you tell me that Rudeni is working in the church?]
[Host, you didn’t ask.]
[……]
Listening to the system’s response, Ifia couldn’t help but twitch her mouth, realizing she indeed didn’t ask for specifics. She decided not to press further on Rudeni’s situation.
Later, Ifia didn’t bother asking the unhelpful system, wanting to avoid a rise in blood pressure. Anyway, since Rudeni invited her to meet in the evening, she would ask for details then!
The waiting time felt particularly annoying, and Ifia lay on the bed in her dormitory. By the dim light of a candle, she took out the carefully kept letter. Looking at Amelia’s handwriting, Ifia couldn’t help but chuckle.
Once her internship at the church was over, and she returned to Pulis Academy, proposing a request for a kiss from Amelia should be an easy task. Amelia probably wouldn’t refuse, right? Then, Ifia could easily complete the system’s task.
In this light, a brief separation seemed quite useful… as long as she endured this period!
Ifia placed the letter against her chest, blushing quietly. She silently vowed that once she returned to the academy, she wouldn’t hesitate and would make sure Amelia kissed her passionately!
/(//•/w/•//)/
[Host, it’s already ten o’clock.]
Just as Ifia was lost in her fantasies, the system’s reminder interrupted her daydreaming. She lifted her hand and gently patted her cheek to snap out of it. After getting out of bed, putting on her coat, she quietly opened the door, heading towards the agreed-upon meeting place.
The moon cast a silver glow over the land, and the stars emitted a faint light. Ifia looked up at the starry sky, breathing in the fresh air. She thought that there were indeed some good things in this world after crossing over, like the unpolluted environment and meeting the beautiful Amelia.
Ah, ah, ah!
Ever since receiving the letter, Ifia has been longing for Amelia! This makes Ifia somewhat suspicious… Is Amelia deliberately sending these letters, thinking of her every day even though they are separated by distance in the church?
However, Ifia quickly dismisses this possibility. Amelia is so gentle and considerate, how could she intentionally do such a thing? She must genuinely worry about Ifia, which is why she writes these letters…
“Ifia, over here!”
Lost in her thoughts, Ifia quickly arrives at the evening tree-climbing spot. At this moment, Rudeni, hiding behind the tree, waves to her discreetly. The two of them resemble undercover agents meeting for a clandestine exchange of information.
This makes Ifia twitch her mouth, but without saying much, she follows Rudeni’s example, swiftly coming behind the tree. Finally, they have a chance to meet and communicate!
“Ifia, I’m sorry I didn’t greet you during the day.”
Upon seeing Ifia, Rudeni immediately apologizes with guilt. Ifia quickly stops her, “It’s okay, Rudeni. We have a bond from surviving together. Don’t worry about these things! But how did you end up working in the church?”
“After those people in black robe took me away, I vaguely heard them say they had captured the wrong person. Later, when I opened my eyes again, I found myself here.”
Seeing that Ifia doesn’t blame her, Rudeni subtly sighs in relief and then explains her experiences at that time. Without Ifia, she wouldn’t have survived.
Ifia is her lifesaver!
“When I strongly insisted on leaving, I was summoned by Saint Tiffany and was immediately offered very generous conditions to stay and work… The church offered too much, and I couldn’t refuse.”
“Now, I am a dedicated staff member responsible for taking care of the Saint. The work is relatively easy, and the generous salary allows me to treat my mother’s illness, and her health is gradually returning to normal.”
“Some time ago, my mom and I went to the Macho Men Tavern. She said she wants to come again next time.”
Talking about her mother’s recovery from a serious illness, Rudeni couldn’t help but smile, her face relaxed. This made Ifia raise an eyebrow, recalling that during their escape, Rudeni mentioned taking her mom to see a male strip show. It seems her wish came true!
“Is your leg okay?”
“The church promptly arranged for a doctor to perform surgery on me. Although it still hurts if I walk for a long time, at least I saved this leg.”
Rudeni is very optimistic. Even if her leg can’t fully recover, as she spoke, she suddenly frowned, then looked at Ifia with a serious expression, “Ifia, maybe you don’t know, but the one behind the witch hunts is Archbishop Gerard Abel of the Church.”
“After the Saint summoned me, she explained the whole situation to me.”
“I was initially furious, but the Saint told me that Archbishop Gerard has already paid the price. His soul has been devoured by demons, and he can never be reborn.”
Speaking of this, a flash of fear crossed Rudeni’s eyes, quickly disappearing. The time working in the church has completely overturned her normal understanding. It is precisely because of this that she arranged to meet Ifia here, “Ifia, you must not get close to the Saint, she is too dangerous!”
“Dangerous?”
Ifia was somewhat puzzled. She hoped Rudeni could explain a bit more clearly.
To be precise, it’s too dangerous around Saint Tiffany! In this period alone, five clergy members have lost their lives, all killed by demons!”
“I can’t escape now because my mom needs the money. But you are just here for an internship and won’t have too much contact… so, please don’t be curious about the Saint.”
“Ifia, may all the goodness in the world accompany your kindness and sincerity.”
Rudeni didn’t want to explain much. She gave Ifia a shy smile and quickly said goodbye, turning away. It seems she intends to continue maintaining distance from Ifia.
This left Ifia standing in place, unable to resist scratching her head. She thought Rudeni’s words were a bit fantastical! Seeing demons in the church? Rudeni wouldn’t have been indoctrinated during her time working in the church… ahem, imbued with faith, leading her to say such things!
Thinking about this, Ifia shook her head lightly. She didn’t plan to intervene too much. Rudeni is clear-minded now, and her freedom is not restricted. It’s her personal choice, and others don’t have the right to persuade her to change.
However, hearing her say that actually made people more interested in Saint Tiffany. Well, especially for gossip enthusiasts like her. But, taking advice, minding her own business—Rudeni’s serious demeanor didn’t seem like a joke. Once it involved troublesome matters, Ifia just wanted to lie low and avoid getting involved, even if she was curious.
“Bang!”
Just as Ifia was thinking it’s better to mind her own business and leave quietly after staying in the church for ten days, passing by the back hall, she suddenly heard a clear collision sound in the quiet night.
In the middle of the night, who could be inside?
[Host, please be careful, someone is behind you!]
Ifia, curious, stopped in her tracks, looking towards the back hall. Just as she was wondering, the system reminder suddenly sounded. Before Ifia could react, a pair of hands reached out from behind, covering her mouth directly.
