[Vol. 3] Chapter 5: She Really Dares to Ask!
Austin’s question is very tricky.
Especially when it falls on the ears of those who are privy to the inside information, there is an anticipation for Prince Carloy’s response.
For example, Ifia. Including immersive experiential plot fragments, she has witnessed scenes twice in a row where Prince Carloy complains and goes to great lengths to annul the engagement.
It seems he is very resistant to the engagement. However, this is just Prince Carloy’s own idea, now placed in public. Ifia thinks that Prince Carloy doesn’t have the courage to speak directly, otherwise he would have annulled the engagement long ago. He is unwilling to let go of the persona he has crafted and his good reputation!
It’s a matter of balancing act. While Ifia is thinking this way, Prince Carloy furrows his brow. He looks at Austin with a questioning gaze, as if asking why such a sensitive question is being raised – it’s quite impolite.
However, Austin is not a novice fresh out of the gate, nor is she a low-ranking noble with no standing. Having experienced many things, she now faces Prince Carloy’s gaze confidently, without any fear. On the contrary, she raises the corners of her mouth with interest, waiting for Prince Carloy’s response.
Although it’s a bit disappointing that even if she gets the answer, she can’t publish it in the newspaper, being able to get firsthand information from the parties involved is still worth it! If she encounters related topics or news in the future, her newspaper can react promptly, showcasing the professional ethics that a news reporter should have.
“I choose punishment.”
However, Prince Carloy’s subsequent choice disappoints Austin but seems normal to Ifia. She watches as Prince Carloy reluctantly maintains a smile on his face, then reaches out to lift a full glass of beer that had fallen over as a penalty for refusing to answer. He is about to drink the entire glass of beer as punishment.
The giant beer mug is large enough to obscure his face, so Ifia can’t see his expression at this moment, but she guesses it’s probably not a pleasant one. Seizing this opportunity, Ifia sneakily approaches Amelia and whispers softly in her ear, “Amelia, Prince Carloy is really cornered. He might as well just be straightforward instead of drinking.”
Ifia is truly speechless about Prince Carloy. Even a perfunctory acknowledgment or a straightforward admission would be better than the ineffective attempt at concealment he’s currently opting for! Where has Amelia’s face gone in all of this?!!!
“Ifia, do you care a lot about the engagement between the royal family and the Barlen family?”
Hearing that Ifia is expressing dissatisfaction for herself, Amelia smiles. She didn’t really care about Prince Carloy, but if Ifia dislikes it, there’s no need to continue with the engagement.
Initially, it was just to prevent other families from frequently proposing marriage alliances. They chose Prince Carloy from the royal family as a shield.
Now, being in human society, they can no longer act as freely as demons. They have to abide by the rules of human society and constrain themselves accordingly. Originally, Amelia planned to wait for another two years, after inheriting the title, to annul the engagement with the royal family. By then, the Barlen family would be completely under her control, and other families wouldn’t dare to continue proposing marriage alliances. It would be up to her, as the duke, to decide whom to contract a marriage with.
“No, anyway, Amelia, you definitely don’t agree with this engagement. I just find Prince Carloy unpleasant. Clearly, he wants to annul the engagement, but he makes you take the lead.”
Ifia pouts with annoyance, seemingly sensing that Amelia wants to annul the engagement for her. This prompts Ifia to quickly intervene, “Amelia, don’t let him off so easily. Let’s drag this on for now!”
Apart from being upset about Prince Carloy’s vacillation, there is also information heard from Jessica. If the Duke Barlen initiates the annulment of the engagement, they would need to compensate the royal family with a significant amount. Eighty percent of this compensation would be handed over to Prince Carloy.
Ifia feels that even giving Prince Carloy a copper coin is too much.
“I’ll go along with your decision.”
Ifia doesn’t hide her emotions and thoughts from Amelia. So when she sees the pained expression on Ifia’s face after mentioning the gold coin, Amelia can’t help but laugh, shaking her head. She then reaches out to gently stroke Ifia’s black hair.
The wealth accumulated by the Barlen family is beyond ordinary imagination, and the compensation for tearing up the engagement is nothing to them. Besides, Amelia doesn’t care about money, it’s just something easily obtained for her. However, since Ifia likes it, they’ll go along with her.
While Ifia and Amelia are chatting, Prince Carloy completes the beer-drinking punishment. He manages to finish the entire large glass of beer. Ifia subconsciously glances at Prince Carloy’s abdomen, seeing that it’s still flat. She finds it a bit illogical – shouldn’t he be somewhat bloated after drinking all that?
Or is it that the giant beer mug just looks big, creating an optical illusion, and there’s not much beer inside after all?
“After Prince Carloy became the first to accept the punishment, I need to remind everyone here! In each round of two games, there’s only one punishment opportunity. This means that in the next round of Truth or Dare, if Prince Carloy is chosen, he doesn’t have the right to refuse the task.”
“Because he has already used up his punishment chance.”
Austin interjected in the middle and then waved her hand, signaling the game to continue. Prince Carloy has a decent alcohol tolerance, and even now, his face hasn’t turned red. He raises his hand to spin the bottle, pointing to the next player!
As the bottle slowly comes to a stop, the mouth is directed at Isabella. The bottom of the bottle corresponds to Jessica. Although the chosen individuals are classmates, Jessica shows no mercy. It’s all part of the game! It’s fun only when played happily.
In the Truth or Dare game, there’s no distinction of status, only the eight participants matter. Thinking of Isabella’s classical elegance and noble temperament, always praised by elders for her graceful demeanor, Jessica raises an eyebrow and mischievously asks, “What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done?”
Hehehe, Jessica thinks she really loves this game. It perfectly satisfies her curiosity. However, upon hearing Jessica’s question, Isabella’s face instantly turns red. Her eyes start to flicker, and in the end, between drinking and answering, she chooses the latter.
“I secretly admired a widowed senior male figure for many years.”
“…”
Goodness! Isabella and Andrea’s responses, one after another, are more explosive than the other! Jessica is left unsure of what expression to put on her face.
Isabella, with her every move exuding the elegance of a noble lady, impeccable manners, and a high status in her family, is a highly favored match among the elite ladies in the circle. If Andrea Manlo is considered eligible bachelors, Isabella would have been a sought-after prospect if not for her younger age. Otherwise, suitors would have circled around Dalwa City several times by now.
Why did she set her sights on an older widower???
As Jessica contemplates the puzzling question in her small head, the game continues. However, Isabella hasn’t revealed the embarrassment of her secret. Instead, it seems like she has unloaded a heavy burden. Her gentle smile becomes more genuine, as if putting a definitive end to this unrequited love.
Isabella raises her hand to spin the bottle. After the bottle completes its rotation, the mouth quickly points to the next person. Jessica’s smile freezes, observing the bottle pointing at her.
Suddenly, the game doesn’t seem as delightful anymore!
Especially when the person sitting across from her is Austin, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper.
Always feel like I’m about to face a major crisis!
“Let me think. How did you attack Sister Nornada in the church?”
Unexpectedly, Austin brings up the old story again!
Jessica looks mournfully at the giant beer mug, comparing it to her petite frame. No matter how you look at it, she can’t drink that much. But the idea of the attack on the nun is not something she wants to be known for. Even though Nornada is no longer a nun, it would still be a topic of gossip.
If it gets out, Jessica feels she might be sent to ideological education classes. Then her family would hire a bunch of etiquette teachers to retrain her as the etiquette princess of the nobility.
After much hesitation, Jessica makes up her mind. She’d rather face social death than drink herself to death here!
“I chose the best time when there was no third person present. I used a sleeping drug to knock Nornada out, and then I used a powder that causes itching all over the body. The itching powder takes effect an hour later, creating evidence of my absence.”
“You’re quite clever,” Austin looks at Jessica with a half-smile, generously offering praise. But Jessica feels it’s sarcasm!
Forced to confess the crime scene, Jessica reluctantly spins the bottle, feeling gloomy.
As the bottle spins, Ifia watches the mouth of the bottle slowly turn towards her, and immediately, her mind starts praying non-stop.
“Oh heavens, please don’t pick me, please, no!”
Unfortunately, Ifia’s prayers do not seem to work. As the bottle comes to a complete stop, the mouth is pointed directly at her.
In an instant, Ifia’s cat-like face falls, and she looks up at the person sitting across from her. The next second, she locks eyes with the smiling Austin.
Ifia’s already downcast cat-like face becomes even sadder. She feels an impulse to escape or jump into the sea. If there’s anything worse than getting a Truth question, it’s getting it from Austin, who seems to enjoy stirring up trouble.
This woman really dares to ask anything!
She has a somewhat wicked taste in her questions. Jessica’s plight is a perfect example!
However, unlike Prince Carloy, Ifia sees herself as just a commoner, not some famous figure. Even if Austin asks, it should be about Amelia, after all, that’s the focus of attention!
In that case, there’s nothing to worry about. After all, the friendship between her and Amelia won’t break over a few words! Thinking of this, Ifia breathes a sigh of relief and then puts on a serious face, waiting for Austin’s move.
Austin, on the other hand, knows how to apply pressure. She doesn’t ask the question right away, instead, she pretends to ponder for a while. When Ifia is getting impatient, Austin finally speaks.
“May I ask if there’s someone here that you like?”
